Wen Fengli 14-year-old wolfgirl working as a servant at the Shuangshan sect. She lived for some time in a far southern orphanage before being adopted by master Lan Caolu. She has a carefree, tomboyish personality, darkened by her unnatural thirst for power. Spoilers past chapter 26:

Zhanzhan A 14-year-old catgirl in service of Shuangshan sect. Her hair is in the characteristic dual color of black and white. Possessing a cheerful and optimistic personality, she was Fengli's best friend back in Chenfei, alas, fate would have them walk radically different paths in life.... spoilers past chapter 18.5:

The Incident at Chenfei left her traumatized. Seeing that, Bai Lianfei chose her as a personal attendant, hoping the journey north will improve her mental state. They were last seen traveling to the town of Yafan....

Annu A 12-year-old sheep-type demi-human. Heavily mutated, his face is deformed into a snout, patches of wool cover his body, and his body can digest hay while rejecting all meat. Secretly in love with Fengli, he follows her on her adventure. He has a calm, analytic personality, but lacks self-confidence. Spoilers past chapter 26:

Seeing the horrible effects that demonic cultivation had on Fengli's body and mental well-being, he requisitioned the amulet from her. He hopes the remnants of Wen clan can heal her of her affliction.

Fuhei A cheerful 15-year-old fox type demi-human who hated humans and secretly fought against the oppression as a masked hero, Yawei. Spoilers past chapter 26:

It was revealed he merely found the hideout of real Yawei after the man was already gone and usurped his role. During the events of the Bonfire Massacre he lost the use of his arm, and his will to fight against the powerful Wuyun cultivators. Now bitter and traumatized, he seeks the mysterious Bai Caoren to relit his fire, and take revenge on the Wuyun sect.

Bai Lianfei The 17-year-old granddaughter of master Lan, she is one of the strongest people in Chenfei. Obsessed with virtue, she leads an inner clique within the sect, seeking to correct it towards the right path... Internal cultivator, most of her efforts are focused on meditation and empowering her life force. Her fighting style, focused on graceful, indirect movements reflects her calm, stoic personality. The element she is most synchronized with is water. Spoilers after chapter 26:

She is the daughter of Bai Caoren and Lan Chaoxiang. Her birth and implantation into Shuanshan sect was no coincidence- she was one of the sleeper agents of the Wuyun sect, meant to succeed Lan Caolu and assume control over the sleepy village, her true loyalty to her aunt, Bai Zihan. Alas...it seems she has some plans of her own...

Bai Caoren Bai Lianfei's mother, and Lan Caolu's daughter-in-law. Committed suicide two years before the start of the story. Spoilers after chapter 26:

It was revealed that Bai Caoren was the head of Wuyun intelligence in the north, and part of a larger plan to overtake the mountains through the means of arranged marriages between Bai clan and local cultivators. Despite being supposedly dead, until recently there was a spy loyal to her, planted in Kiyi fortress.

Bai Zihan The Supreme Leader of the Wuyun sect, she rules with an iron fist and throughout her 30 years of leadership, she managed to unite the entire densely populated lowlands under her rule. An alcoholic fond of strong spirits, she truly believes that the world will be better off under her leadership, and fears all kinds of demonic artifacts and cultivators. She is a (much older) sister of Bai Caoren and Bai Lianfei's aunt. Bai Guowei 100 years ago, he led the monks to victory over the mundane kings and established the new world order based on the treaty of Changan, where sects rule, and non cultivators are second-class citizens. Spoilers after chapter 27:

He is the founder of Bai clan, but nowadays not many in the family would admit that- for in a futile attempt to prolong his life, he embraced the forbidden path of necromancy, and was consumed by his own flames. He was an old friend and rival of Lan Caolu.

Lan Caolu The ailing, deranged old master of Shuangshan sect. Spoilers after chapter 31:

A war hero who initially led the forces of monks to victory against the Red Emperor 103 years ago. Betrayed by his friends, he sought solitude in the mountains, before eventually starting a family and, convinced by Bai Caoren, opening his own cultivation school. He had a personal history with Wen Feili, and took in Wen Fengli after her mother's untimely demise.

Lan Chaoxiang Lan Caolu's son, Bai Caoren's husband, and Bai Lianfei's father. He used to be a martial hero, traveling the land, correcting wrongs, and exorcising undead. Alas, by the time the story began, he's already deceased.... Chen Mengyao A man in his late 20's, one of the first students taken in by Lan Caolu to train in the Shuangshan sect. He has characteristic yellow eyes and long, brown hair. A martial hero traveling the land, he's rarely in the sect as of late. He is part of Bai Lianfei's inner clique and supports her in every decision. Spoilers after chapter 26:

Actually a high-level spy planted in the north by Bai Zihan. He was working directly under Bai Caoren, and after her death, a lot of her power and responsibilities were transferred to him. Now considered untrustworthy by the Wuyun sect, he travels south, pursuing a high priority target...

Yao Erzhan Leader of the Songshu sect that presides over the town of Yafan. An old friend of Bai Caoren and Lan Chaoxiang. His governorship over the town is considered rational and efficient, and he's widely known as a man of virtue. Wang Shunji A happy-go-lucky 17 year old student of the Shuangshan sect, known to play pranks on Wen Fengli and slacking off. His personal philosophy is enjoying life, and he thinks little of cultivation and otherworldly pursuits. Tall, fit, and handsome- and along with that, insanely talented, he's the strongest and most popular student of the sect. Although his family line favors the element of steel, thanks to his unparalleled level of power he is able to project qi outwards in the form of elementally neutral qi blasts. Spoilers after chapter 12:

The qi deviation incident during the tournament leaves him partially paralyzed and confined to a wheelchair. Seeing drastic changes that happened overnight to Ming Libai, and being suspicious of Bai Lianfei, he fakes obedience, while secretly conducting his own investigation. Due to miscommunication with Zhanzhan, he thinks Wen Fengli is dead.

Ming Libai A muscle brain and natural follower. Also, Wang Shunji's best friend. He prefers explosive, short movements in combat, and fights barehanded. His familial element is earth, which he mastered enough to temporarily harden various body parts at will. spoilers after chapter 12:

Something changed in him after his defeat at the hands of Bai Lianfei during the sparring tournament. Now fiercely devoted to her cause, he was accepted into the red ribbon clique.

Mei Rulan A tanned woman in her early 20's, who is a part of Wuyun delegation that arrived to observe the sparring tournament. A cheerful person with a somewhat overbearing demeanor. spoilers after chapter 26:

Her face scarred by Chen Mengyao's sword, and having barely survived the battle of Chenfei, she was afterwards promoted to the head of the local intelligence department and awarded an enhanced blade that once belonged to Bai Lianfei. Although her specialization was reconnaissance, she did her best hunting after Yan Bojing, then Yawei, then suppressing demi-human riots....and now she's on a mission to a far northern town of Yafan to find out whether Bai Caoren is still alive. A person of Chuhua ethnicity, she was adopted to the Wuyun sect at an early age and personally raised by Bai Zihan.

Bai Yunru Bai Zihan's nephew and part of the Wuyun delegation sent to Chenfei. His specialty is setting up all kinds of qi shields. Spoilers after chapter 26:

Shielding their retreat from Chenfei, he suffered the effects of qi deviation.

Banbao A demi-human caravan master who used to know Annu in the past. The old wolf is pragmatic and doesn't take any chances. Yan Bojing A devil cultivator on the hunt by Wuyun forces as of chapter 13. chapter 25 onwards spoilers:

Before death, he gave a demonic ring and the name of Bai Caoren to Fuhei. Considered a spy by Bai Zihan.

Wen Feili A devil cultivator who went out in her own flames after straying from the righteous path. Chapter 31 spoilers:

She suffered head trauma in childhood, which led to her near deafness and social isolation. Thus she devoted herself to scholarly pursuits. Considered a genius, she personally created several demonic artifacts. Accused of demonic cultivation and necromancy, she disappeared over 20 years before the start of the story, together with her clan. Killed during Jianding campaign 10 years ago.
