《P I G S》2. A strange man in a bath robe

I stared blankly at the man in front of me. Unable to process the joke that he just made, I sat there and contemplated going back to the pig monsters.
He seemed to realize his joke wasn’t funny and laughed awkwardly while going to sit down on a large rock next to him.
He clapped his hands as if he was attempting to distract me.
Then he started saying “Welcome to the island. The only place on this entire planet not placed on a map.
I know that you have plenty of questions and I promise that I will answer all of your questions, however now is not the time. First, just focus on survival.”
I felt a strong urge to ask thousands of questions as my mind raced about recent events, however, I decided to take his advice and I asked, “can I stay with you?”
Although this person seems strange it seems that he knows information about this island and more importantly for me, it was terrifying to stay alone.
I would rather risk my life by staying with this crazed person than wander through the forest and find those pig monsters again.
He looked at me for a moment before saying “only for the night then tomorrow morning before the first bell rings you must head to the church otherwise ‘they’ will get suspicious”
curiously I tried to ask him who’ they’ were, however, he cut me off and picked up something from behind the rock he was sitting on while putting his finger up to his lips as if to silence me.
It was a security camera.
I was surprised at why there would be a security camera here, however, the man did not seem willing to answer my questions at the moment.
As I was lost in thought at what he just showed me the man got up and started talking. “It is getting late. I will start cooking dinner. Please, feel free to make yourself at home.”

As he said this he grabbed cooking utensils from behind the rock and meat as well.
Curious as to how he had so many things behind the rock I got up to look behind it however when I did he yelled: “Don’t look behind the rock!”
spittle fell from his mouth as he screamed loud enough to see the veins in his throat. I sat back down in shock and surprise at how loud he yelled.
I looked down at the floor and avoided eye contact with him.
He wiped the spittle off his beard and said “My apologies about that. I didn't mean to yell, however, I promise you that you really don't wanna see what's behind that rock. At least not yet.”
I refused to answer him and continued to sit there looking down as he started cooking food.
After he finished cooking, he placed a warm bowl of meat stew in front of me.
“Eat up” he quietly said as if he still felt guilty about earlier.
However, I refused to eat the food not because he yelled earlier but because of the fact that I still wasn’t sure if I could trust him. What if he poisoned the food?
I could survive without eating one meal.
He silently ate his meal and when he saw me not eating mine he asked “Not hungry”
I nodded my head. He then sat there contemplating something before asking “Can I have it then?”.
I gently pushed the food towards him. He walked over and grabbed the food.
As I saw him eating the food I realized that the food was not poisoned and I regretted not eating that meal.
As the night went on we sat there quietly until eventually he pulled out a guitar from behind the rock and started strumming a gentle tune on it.

I quietly sat there listening to his music and I slowly felt my eyelids close. I tried to keep them open however I couldn't and eventually I fell asleep.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My eyes slowly opened again. I got up slowly and learned that I was no longer where I was when I went to sleep.
The sky was blood red and the trees around me were all dead. There was not a shred of grass on the ground and the flowers were all wilted.
As I looked around I found corpses that were scattered on the floor. They were grotesque and looked as if they had been picked clean of flesh by vultures. I stepped back in fear and felt my back hit against a wall.
When I turned around to see the wall there wasn't one there. I reached my hand out in shock at where I thought the wall was.
My hand was stopped mid-air. Surprise filled my face as I looked down and found a circle of blood symbols where the invisible wall was.
As I was investigating this wall that seemed to encircle me I suddenly heard the sounds of crows gawking. I looked up into the sky as a large black cloud came closer.
I looked closer I noticed that it wasn't a black cloud but a large murder of crows. As they came towards me the sky became blocked out above me as an endless swarm of crows covered the sky except for a small circle above me, the crows avoided it like the plague.
As they were flying over me I noticed a man started walking towards me. He wasn't wearing any clothing, however, he was wearing a strange life-like crow mask.
He seemed to have a lazy eye as well. He kept walking closer and closer until he was standing right in front of me.
His one good eye jolted around strangely. Suddenly both of his eyes jolted straight forwards into a dead stare.
The man in a sudden high pitched bird-like voice said “I am going to eat you”
In shock, I tried to respond “wha-”
However, the man cut me off saying “I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you I am going to eat you”
the bird kept saying that over and over until eventually, it started shrieking, opening its mouth towards me, and possibly the most terrifying thing appeared in front of me.
The crowman had teeth.

The Infinite Labyrinth
(Story complete - Book 1 "Shanghaied", 2 "Shortcuts", 3 "Secrets" and 4 "Sanctions") It is the 19th century, and war smoulders between England and France. Any hope for a quick end to Napoleon's rampage across Europe ended when the Great Gates opened in 1800. For a fortunate few, the strange world of the Infinite Labyrinth offers opportunities, strange descriptors popping in their minds, informing them of growth, and status beyond that of a mere mortal. The materials and power crystal they bring back foster a new age, both military and civilian. Aether-powered Skyships prowl the skies, as all the great nations blessed by the Gates try to turn the blessings of the Labyrinth into immediate advantages. But for Jonas, an apprentice leatherworker, his friend Ira, and so many Londoners, the fabled ones that walk the Labyrinth are distant heroes, seen from afar. They fell short when their Potential was measured, and they fill their mundane lives with distant dreams. One man wants to break the stalemate. The Tyrant of the Dominion of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, has a plan. Eighteen years after the world changed, he will force it to change again. And when civilians are caught in the fallout, the unthinkable happens. Six people, unqualified, forbidden to ever enter the Labyrinth, find themselves stranded in a distant zone, forcefully turned into Professionals. They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They need to understand what the descriptors in their minds mean, what each of the strange piece of gear waiting in treasure chests behind terrible guardians can bring them. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.
