《Kumiai, Cookies & “Genki” Club》Chapter 18: What is he doing here?

Once Sophie was left at the tram stop, Rina and Aya were now on their way to Indigo Beach, in the direction of the Aquamarine, the nice shop of the parents of the young surf champion.
They take the opportunity to tell each other in more detail about the small juicy details of this afternoon.
“…and that’s how I got through my introduction without messing up too much.”
“Um, I don’t know if I should congratulate you or worry that you had to make such an effort for something so basic.”
“Hey, that’s not very nice, of course you have to congratulate me, it’s still the first time since we’ve met that we’re not in the same class. It takes a while to absorb the shock.”
“You think so?”
“I’m sure of it, I bet you Sophie freaked out too!”
“Okay Rina, I’ll take that bet, we’ll ask her tonight. What are you betting?”
“…”
Rina gently rubs her chin with her fingertips and looks at the sky and the surroundings. She then spots a small, inconspicuous ice cream stand out of the corner of her eye.
“I know! I’ll bet you a round of soft-serve ice cream at the best ice cream shop on the entire coast!”
“Oh oh, you don’t shy away from anything, it’s ok with me, bet on it. I still hope you’re ready to treat me because, me and ice cream, it’s a great love story you know.”
“Argh, your confidence just put me in doubt now… Can’t we change the terms of the bet?”
“Too late!”
Rina lowers her head realizing that she may have spoken too quickly. It’s not a good idea to start betting without being 100% sure of yourself, haste will get the better of you poor thing.

“Well, we’re talking but without realizing it we’re already almost to my house.”
“What are you going to do until tonight?”
“I have to help my mom at the store, apparently it’s more crowded than usual and they’re kind of struggling.”
“Ok, so I’ll leave you here, I wouldn’t want to disturb you if there are people around.”
“You can come but I probably won’t be able to stay with you.”
“No, don’t worry, I’ll go join my parents too, they might need me too.”
“See you tonight Rina.”
“Good luck to you, see you tonight.”
Rina leaves on her side, leaving Aya, left to herself in front of a crowd of customers.
And besides, among these customers…
“Hey Aya !”
That fiery and all too loud voice sounds familiar.
“Ah, Noah.”
“So my dudette, fancy seeing you here.”
Aya’s hand takes flight to come and flatten itself on Noah’s too close face.
“You know the principle of respect? Keep your face away from me and especially don’t disturb the customers please.”
“What a harshness…when I’m the one who brought in that clientele.”
“What the hell are you talking about?”
Over the crowd of Aquamarine’s customers, a hand gestures towards Aya.
“Aya, you’re finally here, come quickly put on your work clothes. We’ll take care of this wave here and then I’ll let you get ready.”
“I’m coming mom, I have to get rid of Noah first, he’s bothering everyone.”
“Leave him alone, he’s the one who brought us all those customers.”
“What?”
“See? I brought you all my new surf club buddies and even my dive club buddies.”
“You’re in luck, then. Take this, since you want to make yourself so useful by helping the Aquamarine, put on that apron and come and advise our clients.”

“I can’t deny you anything when you do your tsun tsun like that, haha.”
Low kick in the buttocks of Noah.
“Come on hurry!”
…
Let’s leave our two workers aside and come back to our dear Rina.
Where is she by the way?
…
Already in front of the family ryôkan? Let us thank the effort of incredible staging of my narration which avoids us the long not very interesting walks eh?
“Mummy didn’t tell me which room we were going to have this party in. Let’s go ask at the front desk, I hope Satsuki-san is here today. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen her.”
The automatic door opens and lets discover behind it an unexpected and … deplorable spectacle.
“Eh? Papa…”
The image of Papa-san mopping the floor like a sad building superintendent who no longer enjoys his job.
With a dark and tearful face, he cleans the entrance hall with low enthusiasm… what happened Papa-san?!
“Ah… Rina… How was your day?”
“Uh, good.”
Over the shoulder of Papa-san, appears the receptionist Satsuki-san in front of Rina.
“Good evening Rina-chan, are you okay?”
“Satsuki-san! Yes I’m fine and you?”
“Yes very well thank you. You’re just in time, Mrs. Shimizu is starting preparations for your meal tonight.”
“What happened with Papa? Why is he mopping the hall?”
“Let’s just say he failed in his role as manager and owner by being out of control during his business appointments and now he is suffering the consequences of his actions.”
“Ah right, as usual.”
“Correct.”
“Which room is Mummy in, by the way?”
“She just finished preparing the Golden Pavilion.”
“No way! The best room.”
“It’s a rare opportunity for Mrs. and Mr. Shimizu to invite friends, so they take advantage of it.”
“We’ll be able to get comfortable with Aya and Sophie in the outdoor bath.”
*Noise of mop and Sniff*
“I’m joining Mummy to help her, see you later Satsuki-san. Come help us Papa-san when you’re done here.”
“I’m taking orders from my own daughter now? She’s starting to look more and more like Elsa and it’s scary…”

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14

The original version of the first book was published on RR in 2019 and has since seen multiple revisions based on reader feedback with this one as the final and official fourth version before the second book. While the entire series story has undergone major changes in the last year, all books have been planned since the beginning of writing. It is also my second wish to eventually make this story into a webcomic, either by myself or with a team if possible. Thank you for taking this journey with me, and enjoy reading! ( You can alternatively read books in the series as standalone fictions, but they connect to one another though a running theme and mystery that evolves and progresses with the main character. ) Alternate Blurb for the Singularity Cycle series: Essairyn had never felt truly alive on Earth. It felt like something was missing ever since she was born, but even after nearly 20 years of mundane living, she could never pinpoint what this or the emptiness in her heart was. Suddenly, she awakens in a grandiose, primordial forest and encounters mythical creatures beyond her restless imagination in a parallel world called Sol'h'meyr. She befriends, in particular, a sassy fox-spirit named Akari who reincarnated after three millennia. Essairyn is gifted with abnormal magic, and Akari is being chased by those of her dark past. Together, they set out on an adventure in a world more dangerous than its beautiful facade could hide. Finding new friends along a path riddled with tragedy, Essairyn must learn who to trust as deceit and betrayal lie behind kindly faces. Life in this deceptively promising world slowly spirals down a path of no return. This is not a game, but cruel reality. Her simple adventure became the modest beginnings in a chain of disruptions that tore even the dimensional fabric of time and space. No one, not even Essairyn, was who she thought they were. And not even the fickle gods could change the time-worn destiny of the universes... A single promise shook eternity’s existence.
