《Limits》Chapter 4: Not So Peaceful Night

"Awoooo!" The howling of a wolf woke me up. It was well into the night already and hearing a wolf howling like that, I wasn't very keen to accompany it for the meal. "Awooo!" 'Shut up you stupid wolf!' I thought to myself, while laying in my shelter. I didn't dare to move an inch, but the noises just got worse. I began hearing more and more of them. The worst part? They seemed to be getting louder... Or worse still, closer to me. I just layed there and waited…. I then heard sounds, which I could only describe as ongoing battle. I thought to myself, 'Maybe it's the hunters from before. They might be hunting the wolf right now'. I really hoped that this was a case. Unfortunately, that didn't seemed to be the case. I could hear the wolf's howls, but tother than that, no Human speach whatsoever. 'If I remember correctly, there were five hunters in that group. I can only heard one other noise besides the wolf's howls' I thought. The night sky was illuminated by the moon. I peeled my eyes into the darkness, and looked for any clues. The ongoing battle drew closer and closer. Finally, two silhouettes emerged from the forest, and fought in the open area near the stream. What I saw was a wolf and… a wolf? One of the wolves was much bigger than the other, but also looked more terrifying. It had silver-grey coloured fur that glistered in the moonlight. On the other hand, the other wolf was about half the size of the silver-grey one, and its fur was black. 'I never heard of a wolf with black fur' I thought. Maybe it was dirty, but what would dirty it so much? When I looked more closely, I noticed that its fur shined in the moonlight, like a well polished metal. I could do nothing, but watch the battle and prey they would simply leave. 'Maybe they will leave to a different area, or maybe one of them will die and the other one will leave' I thought. Besides, I wasn't stupid enough to just reveal my location to them. Silver-Grey Wolf: "Grrrrr" Black Wolf: "...." The more I watched the battle, the more puzzled I became. It was like the silver-grey wolf gave different types of howls. Some were long, some were short and sometimes it would even growl. The black one stayed quiet all the time. They pounced at each other countles times, and I started to notice some things. Although the Silver-Grey Wolf was stronger and bigger, the Black Wolf was a lot faster. The fight lasted a few good minutes at that point. Both wolves were tired and wounded. Suddenly, the Silver-Grey Wolf launched an attack on the Black one. It pounced even more ferociously. It looked like this was its final attack. The Silver-Grey Wolf succeded, it killed the Black Wolf thanks to its superior strength and stamina. I thought that the Black Wolf was going to win. It was quite well matched, and had advantage of speed. But alas, the Silver-Grey Wolf was probably too strong for it… or maybe to experienced. I hoped that the Silver-Grey Wolf would leave now… Yea right. It didn't even look at the dead Black Wolf, no. It looked straight in my direction, as if aware that I was there. 'That motherfu****!' I cursed in my mind. 'These wolves probably knew about my existence from the beginning! Who was I going to fool? Of course wolves have superior sense of smell!' I thought, and started to panic. Without any warnings, the Silver-Grey Wolf pounced towards me. This scared me shitless, and I froze for a second. When I snapped out of it, I reached for my large wooden spear. In haste, I retrieved the spear and placed it in front of me. Just in time to see the Silver-Grey Wolf's gaping mouth, full of bloodied teeth. THUD! I woke up desorientated. It was morning, probably of the next day. I felt something heavy pressing onto my whole body. When my eyes focused on the thing, I realised what it was. "HOLY SHIT!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, and crawled out from underneath the wolf. Many things went through my mind at this stage. After the initial shock, I noticed the wooden spear pierced through the wolf's head. Then I recalled what happened the previous night. I placed the wooden spear in front of me, and because the Silver-Grey Wolf's speed was too great, it didn't have time to change directions nor close its mouth. Therefore, it killed itself. When I imagined this situation, I couldn't thank the gods enough for how lucky I was, to carry that stick with me! After calming down a bit, I decided to take some of the leather as well as meat from the wolf. I could make a pouch or a bag to store some stuff inside. Although I didn't have any tailoring tools, I had a knife. Using that and some vines as a thread, should be enough to create a bag in which I could carry some stuff. Unfortunately creating a leak proof container was impossible without proper tools, but something to hold my berries and a stone would be nice instead of my pockets. The meat I took was roasted for my breakfast. I roasted more for the rest of the day, but I couldn;t carry too much of it. I had nowhere to store fresh or cooked meat, taking large quantities would be useless. Besides, why attract wild animals more than I already did. After the breakfast, I packed my stuff and continued on with my journey.

Cybernetic Dragon
Idea Seven, or Inter Dimensional Explorer Automaton Unit-7, has had a bit of an accident. Hijacking the egg of a dragon rather than its intended target of a bird egg, it isn't fully in control of its host brain. Rather the two, dragon and cybernetic AI interface, must work together to survive in a hostile world of magic, dungeons, beasts and adventurers. The AI must deal with being a machine from a world of science trying to carry out its mission of exploration, while the dragon, Rex, must deal with being a cyborg living with symbiotic nanotech that sets him apart from other dragons. What adventures await them? Author Note: I tagged this story GameLit because it contains concepts like levels, classes, and dungeon/beast cores. But, it isn't tagged LitRPG because no one has status screens, other than occasionally Idea Seven who likes to organize data into blue boxes. It isn't a natural function of the world to display level ups or skill ups with an announcer voice. I mention this to set expectations, because otherwise I feel like LitRPG fans might be disappointed by my lack of LitRPG elements while others might be turned off thinking I have a lot of LitRPG elements. I think that if you approach the story with an open mind you will appreciate the gradual way in which the main character learns and expands his understanding of how the world works, but the game mechanics aren't meant to take center stage to the actual story.

#Call Cthulhu
An eldritch comedy. After Cthulhu is summoned into the world, the whole place goes to shit. Things really got out of hand after Cthulhu got nuked. Alex and Julius, a pair of brothers, try their best to make it in a North America reshaped by an eldritch apocalypse. “Stop right there Philip!” Julius interrupted, the vein on his temple starting to throb. “I do not want to hear another simile about what magic is. I have had magic explained to me by three cult leaders, a wizard, and a cannibal. I've heard that magic is like a rainbow, all its parts blending together. The human unconsciousness, powerful and unknowable. A body, you don't want to eat the heart straight away. I am sick and tired of people telling me what magic is. I know damn well what it is.” He drew a breath, interrupting his rant. “Magic is a bad joke. A whole lot of setup, for some nonsense punchline. This whole god-damned apocalypse is an eldritch comedy.”
