《Blue mage》Chapter 16: A talk

For the past two weeks since the announcement of the monster war, Elizabeth had been working on new inventions that were powered by magic instead of electricity. For the first week, she only had failures, ranging from just exploding to imploding and most things in between. But after that, she started to figure out the keys to making her tech work on magic. It was just a simple thing that Luke showed her. A rune to change raw magic into electricity. Of course, it had taken that first week to get it to work. All the tweaking that had to be done so it would absorb ambient mana then store it and then pull from that storage when the trigger was pressed. To sum it up she had created vibration weapons the used magic as a fuel source.
Just in time as Luke wanted to hunt down a captain that was getting too close to the town. After he had done some recon they knew what they were facing and Luke wanted to bring Elizabeth along just to be safe. She was the highest level in town after all. After promising her any part of the captain she wanted Elizabeth was ready to fight.
Equipped with her sound gun, earthquake boots, body armor, and surround sound drones she was ready to fight a captain. Luke was dressed in loose-fitting casual clothes and a long sword. Elizabeth didn't understand why he wouldn't wear armor but he just shrugged it off with an 'I don't need it' which just sounded like bull to her but he was level 27 so who was she to judge.
It had taken them about 36 hours to track down the captain which turned out to be a large elephant man with a great ax and heavy armor, perfect for Elizabeth. There were also slightly smaller ones scattered about at what looked to be a campsite. The sun was just setting as the two found the camp.

"We should attack in 2 hours," Luke said as soon as they were out of earshot. Elizabeth just looked at Luke in confusion before asking, "I get the whole 'attack under the cover of darkness' thing but we can't win a fight like that without a lot of light."
Luke just raised an eyebrow and smiled, "I'm a hero of light you know."
"You know I've been being to ask, how does being a hero of light work exactly?" Elizabeth said while crossing her arms.
"Oh that, for some reason people just don't ask. Well, I embody the element of light which is about community and a warm safe environment. While a hero of fire would also value community they would impart a sense of competition over comfort. Then you have elements like darkness which value the individual over the group. So a hero of darkness wouldn't make a town they would just fight monsters, kinda like Jace." Luke explained.
"So what happens if you don't act like how light wants you to?" Elizabeth asked confused about how this all worked.
Lukes smile goes dark as it looks like the light from the campfire dims, "We can't, it's one of the requirements of being a hero. You lose the ability to act against your element. You can't even think of actions that would go against it."
Elizabeth just looked in horror at Luke and let the silence sit there for a second before adding, "Back on my continent some inventor made slave collars." She stops for a second as the fire seems to die out but the flames were still flickering, "We banned them about a year ago when the High Emperor took power. It was a great day for me as I," She takes a breath, "used to be a slave. I managed to escape a couple of times but a slave inventor was too important to let go." The light from the fire was gone now and she could only see that the flames were still there with her enhanced eyes. "You probably know this but most people never made it past level ten, I was level 13 when I was first enslaved. Thankfully thanks to my class I was treated better but I can't get the image of how the other slaves were treated out of my mind. We couldn't act directly against whoever owned our collar so it took time to invent a counter to it. So I'll ask you how can you stand being a glorified slave to the light!" By now Elizabeth had tears in her eyes from remembering that dark time.

Luke looked Elizabeth in the eyes with an intensity she had rarely seen. "First, I will never allow slaves on this planet and will take every precaution to make sure what happened to you never happens again. Second, I chose this. I chose to lose my free will for the sake of humanity. We need good leaders right now and no one else is cutting it. I need to do this. Imagine what would have happened if I wasn't a hero, what would have happened when Jace, an extremely strong but good-hearted person came out of that tutorial and was attacked for looking how he looks. That could have been the end for humanity. What happens if someone like Jace does lose faith in humanity. We have to rely on people like Jace who have warped minds with confused priorities. What if Jace just stopped helping us because he progressed too far on his path, what then. What if your High Emperor just says fuck it and allows slaves again. I need to do this to be a shield for humanity, to protect that innocence and goodwill that we have. I can't let someone else do it for me or hope that when higher powers come to earth they have the best intentions in mind. I need to do this." Luke's voice gained a sharp edge by the end that reminded Elizabeth of the first time she heard the High Emperor's voice.
The light slowly returned as they both sat in silence, each having a lot to think about.
