《Game Over》Chapter 6

"So, uh, system," Zero said as he kept walking. "Can you tell me more about dungeons? Just so I have more information."
[Gladly, host. Dungeons are formed when an abundance of mana goes berserk and collides with each other. The amount of mana and the energy contained within it decides the difficulty of clearing the dungeon. For example, you are currently inside of a Tier 1 dungeon with an unknown danger level but based on the monsters from earlier, the danger and difficulty of clearing this dungeon are probably not high.]
"What about whatever you said earlier?" Zero asked. "What are Rooms? Is that what I was just in?"
[You are correct. The Rooms inside of a dungeon contain dungeon monsters formed from mana. It is unclear as to why they are formed specifically inside of Rooms, as they are stuck there and not allowed to leave. These monsters are also different from the ones you find outside of dungeons, as the monsters found inside of Rooms cannot be reasoned with and will attack any humans on sight.]
Zero nodded his head. "Got it."
[There are also a variety of Rooms, host. There are regular Rooms, Mini-Boss Rooms, Boss Rooms, and Red Rooms.]
Zero sighed. "Please tell me about all of them."
[Regular Rooms have a time limit as to how long you can stay in them. After three hours have passed, if you still have not killed all the monsters, you will be forcefully pulled out of the Room back to where you started. However, if you clear out the entire Room, the survivors will be granted rewards, with there being an extremely small chance that you do not receive one.]
Zero grumbled a few incoherent words.
[If you clear out the entire Room, the monsters will only respawn after one hour, if you do not clear out the entire Room, the Room will remain the same way you left it, which is why most Mercenaries leave at least one monster alive so they do not have to clear the Room again when they want to exit the dungeon.]

[Some regular Rooms also have Room Rules. Room Rules are a unique "law" that only applies to that Room. For example, the Room that you just exited from had a Rule of {No Magic}.]
"No magic? Then how did I-"
[That was a skill, host. Skills take aura to wield, while magic requires mana. However, you are a unique exception to this rule. Your mana and aura are both classified under MP, which is neither mana nor magic.]
"Well, that's mighty useful to know, innit?"
[Perhaps. Red Rooms are different from regular Rooms. Once you enter one, you are not allowed to leave until you have killed all monsters inside. There is also usually a limit to the number of people that can enter this Room, once it has reached the capacity, nobody else may enter. These Rooms are extremely rare and always have Room Rules.]
"Well with my shitty luck, I might run into one."
[Red Rooms also give out excellent rewards. Mini-Boss Rooms usually have a mini-boss monster inside with their underlings. These Rooms have an extremely high chance of having Room Rules, but the logic is the same with Regular Rooms, you will be forcibly pulled out of the Room after three hours, or you can leave after you have killed all monsters. You can usually tell when you are about to enter a Mini-Boss Room as the rift leading to inside the Room is a light tint of orange.]
[Meanwhile, Boss-Rooms usually have a Mini-Boss inside as well as a Boss. These Rooms always contain at least one Room Rule, if not more. You can also only leave these Rooms after you have killed all the monsters or five hours have passed. The rift leading to these Rooms is usually colored with a light tint of red, indicating that it is a Boss-Room. Mini-Boss Rooms and Boss Rooms both usually have a high chance of containing good rewards.]

"Is that everything I need to know about Rooms?"
[Yes, host.]
"There better not be something you didn't tell me for the sake of me finding out by myself or something."
The system didn't respond.
"Oh yeah, what's my cheat? What happened back there inside that Room? How was I able to copy that goblin's ability?"
[You are able to copy any skill or magic that is used on you, no matter whether or not it is a physical attack or a mental one due to your unique passive ability of {Genius Learner}.]
"S-so you're saying I have to get hit by something whenever I want to learn a skill or magic?"
[You can also try to learn them yourself, but it is generally easier to get hit with the skill or magic as it can directly give you it or level up your proficiency in that skill or magic.]
"Oh god."
[Even if the skill or magic slightly grazes you, you can learn it, if that makes you feel any better.]
"It doesn't."
The system went silent after that remark. As Zero continued walking he eventually came to a wall and a podium off to the side that looked identical to the one he saw earlier.
"Well, here's my chance to learn some skills, huh?" Zero said as he grinned, although it looked a little forced.
"Fuck."

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion. Please use your best judgment, and don't be afraid to take breaks and come back later. I'll still be here! [Discord] - come hang out and chat! Beyond the Bridge
There are many worlds, many multiverses, and you can move between them via the Federation's Bridge network - magical gateways to other worlds. The world dubbed "C'thon" by its inhabitants - or Gamma-Theta-Nu-649, if you ask the Federation's bureaucracy - was deserted when the Federation found it. The "civilized" races had all died out centuries prior, and the wilderness had grown downright feral in their absence. Now, the lonely Federation outpost of Bridgetown is under constant threat from the hungry wildlife, malicious fey, territorial goblins, and wandering undead that surround it. The town's distance from the Federation's centers of power means that it gets precious few of the resources that it needs to stay safe and afloat. Enter the Guild of Adventurers, a plucky and disparate crew who do the Federation's dirty work in exchange for coin. One team, the first of many, crosses the Bridge to C'thon looking for fame, fortune, and (if they're lucky) the answer to a newly-discovered Prophecy. They'll get much more than they bargained for, although first they need to avoid being eaten by the local wildlife. Updates weekly on Wednesday. Chapters will be as long as they need to be for them to work, which means they can vary. If anything drops below 2500 words, I'll post an extra chapter if I have one ready. [PS: This is not a litRPG, but I do borrow heavily from TTRPGs for inspiration, and the general setting and storyline is from a TTRPG campaign I'm running.] [PPS: This is my first attempt at writing long-form fiction. I'm not trying to make a great piece of literature or have a multi-novel overarching plot, but hopefully it'll still be a fun story - let me know what you think in the comments.] [PPPS: Cover image is from a free-download wallpaper by Tyler Edlin; I do not own it, and will take it down immediately if requested.]
