《On The Run From A Dragon》Day Eight: Part One

It was the first time Tom woke up with June in his arms. She felt so lightweight and warm. His sleep nervous system kicked in and he pulled her closer. That's when his stomach made its presence know. A civil war broke out between Sleep and Hunger. In the middle of it, a new desire entered the field of battle. Sex being man's third basic need, Lust made a good push against Sleep, but the smell of food was all Hunger needed to win. It sat at the top of his mind as it yelled 'Food!'. Panic ran up to Hunger and kicked it in the side of its head.
'If I'm holding June, then who brought me food?'
Tom's eyes opened and he shifted the infrared light entering them to visible light. Looking over her at his cool dark gun and magnetically pulled it to his bright red hand. The sound of the hammer cocking back caused the gnome to freeze. It looked like she was pushing a cart full of food.
"Chief?"
Swallowing some spit and nodding as she tried not to show any fear.
"Yeah, I got us some food here."
Hunger came up behind Panic and garroted it. As Panic was being strangled, Hunger whispered in its ear 'fffooood'.
"Let put away my gun. Next time please knock on the door."
Tom was reaching over June to put away his gun when she woke up. Not really thinking about it before she did it, June kissed him on the lips and then said.
"Good morning."
Lust saw its chance, but Hunger ran over in a barbarian rage. Tom froze for a second before saying.
"Umm, morning. Chief got us some breakfast, are you hunger?"
You could almost hear the crack as her head snaped up. June glared at her as she walked over to Tom. Chief smiled as passed him a plate and said.

"That's for June."
Passing it along to her and then he was headed another one. Chief sat down next to him and began to eat from her own plate. Wile they ate, June and Chief shot rapid fire death stare at each other. After he got done eating and looked the cart with more food on it. His bladder cut a deal with his stomach.
"Hey I'll be right back. I need to make more room."
Both of them let out a happy "Ok!" as he got up to leave. As soon as Tom was out of the room, June reached for her. Dragging her over by the throat and bringing the little rat up to eye level. June growled out.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?"
Chief managed to say as she was being choked.
"You don't deserve him."
She did try to kick at June, but her legs weren't long enough. Then she was dropped to the blankets and June leaned in.
"I don't deserve him?"
Coughing a bit and trying to catch her breath before answering June.
"I'm making him a space ship and all you are doing is playing house wife. I can do move him for then you ever could."
June smiled at this.
"I'll let you in on a little secret. He chose me. I get mental massages from him. I know what he wants the most. When the order comes in, I'm go-
Tom walked back in and both of them turned to smile at him. He Looked back and forth between and then asked.
"Is everything ok? I thought there was some yelling going on.
Chief gave him a carefree answer.
"It was just girl talk."
They both grinned at each other, but their eyes said it all. This was not over.

In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter. This story is also being posted to Scribblehub.
