Chapter 14 - A Foreshadowing Shadow
His father talking about the Beolum Kingdom in the west, its seven founding clans, and the Deatus Empire further to the west, did not seem to enter Mark’s ears, as the morning lessons had drained him of energy. Mark had always been an action over words person, Daniel mused. Daniel himself, though, liked these classes, especially the Study of Body and Nature. There was something inherently beautiful about how living things grow, take in food to create energy, make waste, and reproduce. Of course, History, Geography, and Politics lessons were also important, as they explained where they all were, what elements surrounded they, and how they came to be. Decisions, wars, and disasters had shaped the world into what Daniel lived in now. However, he still found natural phenomenons and wonders of nature much more appealing. Although he had not see it with his own eyes, the endless depths of oceans, the unforgiving tornadoes, the towering tsunamis, the undying trees and tall mountains piercing the skies were simply… cool.
Daniel looked on amusedly as Evan smacked Mark from his stupor. Eifion on his laps also let Daniel know of his amusement through their mental link. As Mark overreacted, Dellons could not help but chuckle and Mark glared at him, clenching his head. Daniel could already imagine Dellons’ ass get walloped later during the spar. Mark had already displayed his overwhelming talent in the art of swordsmanship: he had something, something that gave him an edge over the other two children. Mark and Daniel were by no means bad. The ten-year-old red haired had reflexes that far-outclassed his peers and owned a sort of controlled lucidity whenever his hand grasped a sword. He was a genius of the sword, although a disappointment in most other fields. Although sometimes, he’d have too much fun that he becomes a bit sloppy in his form.

During this half year, all three of them were smoothly getting stronger and the progressively longer morning runs had shaved off most of the boys’ baby fat. Speaking of morning runs, as soon as the blue dragon could wield its wings to fly, it had taken a liking to following them on their runs. Eifion usually slept during their trainings in the basement room, breathing in the golden Qi in its long naps, but it seemed to have taken a liking to riding on the wind that the three friends hated so much. It had never occurred to him until he compared himself to the little dragon, but Daniel realized how truly feeble a human’s body was. The fact that cultivating could allow them to secure more and more land from the other inhabitants of the world was plainly a miracle. It wasn’t just on their physical capabilities that they could not compare to other species; there were still many other fields they were lacking in.
The fertility rate of most Qi creatures were higher than humans of the same level and their offspring were mostly born in batches, instead of individual birth. If wars were to be fought solely by population, in a given area, humans were most likely to get overrun than not. Humanity’s cooperative ability were also lacking compared to races who shared experiences and feelings telepathically, and humanity’s resistance to extreme weather was pathetic. Of course, this was solely if humanity’s ability to cultivate was not considered.
Smack.
It was now Daniel’s turn to be reprimanded for having his head in the clouds.
-------
“Mark, stop swinging your sword with too much momentum. You’re losing balance.”
“Daniel, it’s fine to be calm, but don’t overthink it when you see an opening.”
Evan instructed the two children as they sparred, but occupying the greater part of his mind was another thing. In the last week, there had been several sightings near Ván of wandering Qi creatures that were usually too frightened to approach the human bastion. He had ordered the hunting squad to investigate, and for some reason, this news had caused all the Elders’ sixth senses to ring menacingly.

Royal Guard (Complete)
I was an ordinary worker ant of the Kingdom, one of the millions populating a spread of land ten kilometers long. I had an ordinary life: I dug, I ate, and I slept; and a dream that was shared by all workers who wanted to live a life of adventure. I was on the last day of my mandatory community service, a day from becoming one of the harvesters --the crown jewel of our society-- when fate played its sick joke on me. I broke my mandible, lost my dream, and was almost forced into slavery as a result. That’s when she came into my life, a princess. She had no wings on her back, but the wings inside her were wider than the fairies that roamed the sky. She took me under her wing and populated my life with adventures and mysteries unreserved for a mere harvester. Life was good until we found termites sneaking into our territory. That’s when the adventures ended. She was mocked for calling the termites a threat. However, she remained determined to protect her kingdom, and I, to protect her. No matter the difficulties I remained by her side. Because we were a pair: a princess and her Royal Guard.

Catalyst: Avowed
The year is 605, and in your home— the country of Corcaea— the souls of mankind belong to demons. A phenomenon known as the "Catalyst" is what's to blame. This diabolical phenomenon lurks within every man, woman, and child. It can turn any human into a demon, if they fall prey to one, all-consuming element. It can be anything. Fear. Grief. Generosity. Even love. In a land where Gods are real and Corcaea's theocracy is the last hope for mankind, you follow in the footsteps of Father Richard Anscham: a deeply disturbed young priest, the leader of the Church of Mercy, and the foremost researcher of the Catalyst. Despite completing a holy mission from the Goddess of Mercy, obtaining a holy Relic, and escaping from demon-infested ruins, Father Anscham is in greater peril than ever before. Ravaged in mind, body, and soul, the solace he begs to receive from the Church of Flesh is impeded by a cruel lesson: the ramifications of a life spent sacrificing everything one has for others. See through the harrowing eyes of a man at his wit's end; through a dark fantasy tale of horror, hope, and desperation. Search for the cure. Conquer your personal demons. Welcome to Catalyst! As this is an archive of Catalyst Quest (an interactive, collaborative story), the prompts that were included with the original run of Avowed have been stripped, and the story is presented like a traditional novel for your reading convenience. If you would like to read Catalyst in its original format or participate in current events, you can find us here, on Sufficient Velocity. This book is complete! The story will continue with Catalyst: Calunoth, just as soon as I am done revising its content for here on Royal Road.

Theory of Rifts (LitRPG)
You can join my Discord here. Keynes Kid is gifted with a photographic memory and being several months away from receiving Level 1, and a Talent, he finds himself in the center of attention of people who want to shape his Talent. If they can get him an intelligence related Talent, they will hit a jackpot. The Talent Unlocking ceremony finally comes and Keynes Kid receives… Error… Anomaly (What?) His new talent is… useless. Why then does the World Government want Keynes so badly they will silence anyone who knows about his Talent? At the same time... Somewhere in the Universe, ancient beings stir from their slumber, awoken by the system alert and the wall of glaring red warnings. Their greatest fear just manifested and they are hell-bent on erasing it from existence. -------- It is a slow-development story, so you won't find the MC with super powers at the beginning. -------- It is a coming of age story and focuses on a Talent system (in the beginning) with several additions that bring to the table upgrading of a planet’s tier and such (a bit later). There will be quite an amount of rebuilding society as new, unknown resources enter the economy, and a lot of travelling, delving and naturally, unlocking the secrets of the Universe. As for the setting, the story starts in XXI century, which technology-wise isn't much different from what we have now, but it is enhanced by magic associated with Talents. This allowed the humankind to colonize the solar system, but the technology that allows for interstellar travel doesn't exist (yet). Because it’s my first attempt at LitRPG, please be forgiving but constructive. I hope you will enjoy the story! --- Cover by Daniel Gembus https://www.artstation.com/daniel_gembus instagram.com/danielgembus
