Chapter 4: A Lore Heavy Bathtime
“Stop splashing. It’s wasting water.” Zone said.
“Isn’t Sol going to provide money for the village? That’s why we’re going on this journey, isn't it? Wasting water isn’t going to be a problem for us from now on, right?” Aria asked.
“Yeah, I think Aria has a point, Zone. We don’t need to worry about that stuff anymore.” Mom said, splashing Zone.
“You guys are too carefree.” Zone said.
“No, you’re just too uptight. Relax, we’re all family here.” Mom said.
“You’re both girls, do you have no shame?” Zone asked, rolling his eyes.
“You’re my brother. I don’t think it matters if you see me. It doesn’t change anything. You’re still going to be my brother.” Aria said, laughing.
“You two are like the guys who say ‘don’t worry, we’re all men here, right?’ Whenever there’s a public bath. Except even more shameless.” Zone said, grumbling.
“If it wasn’t you, I’d be freaking out. But it is you, so why worry?” Aria asked.
“Exactly! Aria is right. Why does it matter so much to you? We’re family. Unless…. you’re thinking something dirty..” mom said, a devious gleam in her eyes.
Aria saw the gleam, and it spread to her, too.
“Yeah, Zooone. What are you thinking about, huh? You wouldn’t have those kinds of thoughts about us, would you?” Aria asked.
The both got up, advancing towards him menacingly, with an evil grin.
“Eek!” Zone squeaked.
They pounced, tickling him viciously.
“Ahhh, stop stop stop, I give, I give! Haaa… haaaa. Jeez. Fine, you two win.” Zone said, quivering.
They high fived.
“You really are airheads.” Zone said, recovering.
“So, what’s our mission thingy, anyway?” Aria asked.
“It’s about defeating the demon king.” Zone said, frowning.

“Isn’t that something you always complained about? Why accept a mission that goes against your beliefs? Even if it is for the village, it wouldn’t sit right with us if we knew you were doing something you didn’t want to.” Mom said.
“Sol seems reasonable. She agreed that I had a point when I told her about my thoughts. I may be able to strengthen the relationship between humans, Demi-humans, and demons if I go.” Zone said.
“Ohhh, I never would have thought about that.” Mom said.
“It’s not something most people would. Getting this kind of chance is something most people can’t even dream of.” Zone replied.
“Then grab a hold of it! Oh, wait… You did already. Silly me. In that case, I wish you two luck on your journey! A little parental advice, before you leave, though!” Mom said, splashing both of them.
“Advice? From you?” Zone asked.
Moms’ face turned from a happy smile to a hardened frown.
“Yes. From me. Zone, you know the stories about me and your father, right?” Mom asked.
“Of course I do. I love those stories.” Zone said, smiling.
“They aren’t just stories. They're all real. Will you listen to my advice seriously now?” Mom asked.
She summoned dark magic, temporarily engulfing the whole room, then purifying it with holy light magic.
Zone and Aria looked as if their life had just been flipped upside down and inside out.
“W-what? N-N-no! That’s impossible! For one thing, there’s no such thing as other worlds in the first place, so it can’t be true!” Zone said, stuttering, an unbelieving and shivering smile on his face.
He backed up.
“For a kid that’s so smart, are you really saying that now? You know what it means to be able to use holy light magic. I’ve told you the stories myself, after all. I’ll meet you outside when you two are ready. I have things to give both of you. Well, from me and your father, I should say.” Mom said, drying off and heading into the back room.

Zone and Aria sat there, dumbfounded.
“You heard her too, right? I’m not going crazy, am I, Aria?” Zone asked.
“Nope, I heard it too… And I definitely saw her magic. I knew she was strong from when we sparred, but that was on another level.” Aria said, awestruck.
“You know what, it’s a bad idea to sit here not believing it and wasting more time. It’s mom, after all. I actually should have expected this. I don’t know why it came as a surprise. Then again, while I knew she had secrets, I never expected… That Mom was really a hero from another world.” Zone said, getting out of the bath. Aria did the same.
They went out to find their mother, desperate for more answers.

Dream of the Abyss
Elisa Mary Grant died in a hospital bed after being stuck in it for six months, and like any other, her soul drifted away from her husk when she passed. For her, death was a release. It merely meant that she no longer have to wake up in pain, breathing through tubes and have doctors flood her veins with dubious chemicals for “experimental treatment”. Free from her mortal constraints and useless body, she felt… at peace, serene, even. Death is bliss, after all, when objectively living sucked to the point of extreme. Therefore, there was no reason to mourn at all and she knew she definitely didn't. ... That was until, on her way for a proper reincarnation, she found herself rudely interrupted and left stranded in the great NoWhere. “Wonderful,” she remarked as she floated in the [Beyond], “Just when I thought that suicide is the answer.” Author's note: Updates every Tuesday-Wednesday, probably some time in between. ... P.S Notes: Contains existential questions and nihilistic themes, rather philosophical. Will be rather sluggish until the MC gets her shit together. P.SS Notes: Story takes time to develop. And maybe uncomfortable. It's not gonna be action-packed or filled with battles, I think. Anyway, it is kinda unusual. P. SSS Notes: It is not LitRpg. Don't be fooled.

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!

Rekindle
My Newest, and at the same time, Oldest novel. This is a Rewrite of my very first novel that I begun when I was just starting out. It follows the story of Mark Floyd, a broken man who once tried to do what he thought was right... only to be stabbed in the back and thrown away. Now, pulled into a conflict that spans time and space, Mark has a choice to make; Stand up once more, even if it means facing an unknowable future, or let the Embers of his heart die and sink back into darkness. ----------------------------------- “For gold is tried in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity”. Once part of a Special Ops team in the US Army, Mark Floyd thought he had seen the worst that Humanity had to offer. That was until his final mission, one that would leave him a broken and shattered man, betrayed by the Country he served, and abandoned by society as a whole. His dreams filled with nightmares of the ones he failed to protect, mind and memories clouded by booze and more, Mark finds himself stumbling through life without purpose or desire. Life isn't done with Mark yet, however. For as long as even a single ember remains in a persons heart, here is still yet hope for the flames of Passion and Hope to be Rekindled. When the dying embers of Mark's heart catches the eyes of a Being far beyond his understanding, Mark finds himself thrown into a situation not even his years of training could prepare him for. Will this new chance be Mark's hope at both Redemption and Recompense? Or will it simply be the final nail in the coffin for a man already dead to the World? [This is a rework of my very first story. The general story will remain the same, however a few details have been tweaked, the chapters have be Edited better and some chapters have been broken down into smaller chunks for better flow and consistency. The biggest change will be to the System itself; It will be a lot less "Game-like", meaning no stats, levels or similar aspect, though skills will still be present in the form of "Programs". Instead, It'll focus more on the Sigil's nature as super-computers and how they change the world around them. This should make for a much more "natural" and less info-dumpy system.

Dust and Glory
A century after World War III left the planet a nuclear wasteland, earth is nearly unrecognizable. Alien ‘Benefactors’ have taken control of North America’s most populous cities and built indomitable walls around them, defending their inhabitants but trapping them under a totalitarian rule. Outside these citadels, chaos reigns, led by the mutants of the wasteland; cultists, raiders, and canibal clans. Glory, a rogue android, is roaming the wastes after escaping her sadistic “father”. Alone and reeling from the effects of a previously sheltered life, her only ray of hope is Reza City, built upon the ruins of what used to be Phoenix, Arizona. True, the Benefactors have a strict ban on self-aware artificial intelligence in place, but that should only prove an issue if they realize she’s an AI. The real problem is what lurks outside the city: over a million square miles of harsh, unyielding desert. And slinking between the dunes and the fissures are the mutants, looking for an easy victim.
