《Slayer of Kings》Chapter 31 - Tragedy Strikes

A figure stood in front of a town. The most striking feature of the town was the abundance of cherry trees it had. They were all lined up neatly along the pathways with buildings built from bricks and painted.
'Leo after I have your sword I will be able to combine it with mine, then I will be able to take revenge on my father for what he did to me and my mother.'
The figure was none other than Cao.
'If not, here then the next place,' Cao said as he walked into the town.

"How to increase the water pressure?" Emilia asked.
"Well to increase the water pressure you have to make the water crush itself as the more you make the water crush itself the more pressure it creates," Emilia replied.
"But it puts a lot of pressure on your mind so you have to be careful and not get overwhelmed by the pressure," Emilia added.
"I see."
"Then do you know about World Crystals that are able to absorb the power of others? Like their elements?" Asked Leo as he wanted to know how he was able to absorb the water element from the assassin he killed.
"Absorb other elements? No, a World Crystal can only absorb the Essence of its particular element, it cannot absorb other elements," Emilia said after some thinking.
So then how was he able to absorb the assassins element? Was his Crystal special? It seems he would need to look somewhere else for answers regarding the Crystal.
Does this mean his Crystal can absorb others powers? To clarify that he would need to kill someone.
"What do you ask Leo?" Emilia asked as she raised her eyebrows seeing Leo lost deep in thought.

"Just curious that's all," Leo said not wanting her to know about his Crystal.
"Well, if you say so."
---
Leo did nothing other than training the two days he spent in the village. Emilia also accompanied him to the river both the days. As for Mia since she was a light element user she would go to an open area during the noon to be able to absorb the Essence much faster. Xander remained in the hospital and he was recovering much quicker than anticipated. After two days of staying in the hospital, he was ready to leave but would need to rest for two weeks when he returns.
Leo trained using the clone and frenzy simultaneously to improve his power in a fight, however, he did not start with increasing the pressure of his water.
Emilia trained her water armor ability and the four orbs ability. When the two days were over she was able to attack with the four orbs, however, the distance they could travel was greatly reduced compared to when she used only two orbs.
Leo and Emilia continued to duel, but Emilia failed to win, however, her skills have improved by a lot compared to the fight against the beasts.
---
It was finally time for them to leave the village and return back to the town. All of them met at the hospital where the coachman and his carriage were also present.
However, it was when they prepared to leave that smoke and screams rose from the north side of the village which was opposite to where the hospital stood.
Leo along with Mia, Emilia and Xander moved towards the source of the fire. Along the way, they saw many people running away from the north side of the village.
By the time they arrived there, the fire had already spread to more than ten houses and it was rapidly expanding its territory.

Many screamed in agony as they flesh burned before their eyes. The flesh had turned black and white.
Some laid on the sand in shock as their nerves have all been damaged and so they were unable to feel any pain, however, the shock of having and seeing their own flesh being burned left them immovable.
There were two who were running and screaming while their bodies were burning like campfires. Many people ran away from them scared for their own life rather than helping the two by putting out the fire.
Mia, Emilia, and Xander were shocked seeing this scene as they had never seen such a tragedy before as for Leo since he was used to scenes like this it did not bother him.
The two finally fell to the ground with their charcoal bodies as the fire easily managed to penetrate their skin completely burning their insides and outsides. They had no hair left on any part of their body and their muscles and tendons have all been destroyed.
There were many people who cried around the injured as many had their skin turn red and covered in blisters. Panic and screams took over the once peaceful village.
"Emilia quickly put out the fire!" Mia ordered.
Emilia who had her eyes and mouth open wide was brought back into reality by Mia's call. She was too scared to look at the burned and injured bodies, however, the current situation did not put her in a luxurious place so she mustered all her courage and used her Crystal to put out the fire.
"LEO, what are you doing?!" Mia shouted at Leo.
It was when Mia prepared to shout again that a lady came running to them. Just before she fell to the ground, she got caught by Mia.
"Those bandits... I saw them... The... They set fire to the... Houses... I beg you... Find them," The woman said, struggling to forget the pain in her right hand was causing.
"I will do as you say, but please don't push yourself," Mia comforted the woman.
Mia looked towards the other "Me and Xander will go in search of the bandits while Emilia and Leo will stay here and help put out the fire."
Xander was okay with this even though he was injured as right now his injury did not matter.
But before they left Emilia spoke, "No, Mia, that won't work I can put the fire out by myself you three should go as we do not know how many of them there are."
Suddenly Mia had the urge to ask the woman how many bandits there were, however, when she looked at the woman, her eyes were closed, fearing for the worst Mia looked for her heartbeat and thankfully she had one which meant she had fainted.
"Fine we will do as you say and now that I think about it, this is a better plan," Mia said as he looked around for someone to give the woman too.
It was now that a man in his mid-30s came rushing toward them. He came and crashed to the ground as he struggled to breathe, however, he still took the woman from Mia's hand. He thanked them as he cried his heart out.

How the Stars Turned Red
Announcement as of 05 July 2022: I've been diagnosed with some pretty severe nerve damage in my left arm, rendering me unable to write effectively, and as such this story is on hold until it is healed. I am so sorry, and I promise to get back to writing as soon as possible. In the latter half of the 3rd millennium CE, humanity has spread across the stars, inhabiting close to five-hundred worlds across the Orion Arm. Earth has become irrelevant, a historical has-been. The galactic map is dominated by two mega-factions, both controlling vast amounts of territories either through direct control or through their many allies and treaty signatories. The Kingdom of Aurora is the political and economic hegemon despite consisting of only seven inhabited worlds; their strength lies in the Royal Union, an interstellar commonwealth composing an internal market and a common defence pact. These member worlds are myriad and varied, culturally as well as politically, but they all flock to the same banner. The Independent Systems Alliance, spearheaded by the Republic of Elysium, is the ascendant challenger to Aurora and the Union. A pseudo-federal multi-system polity, the Alliance economy and military is rapidly expanding, but at the cost of effective democratic and meritocratic involvement by its people. However, with two superpowers as this, chafing along a common border, and with a constant clamour of polemics, both sides have become convinced the other is constantly preparing for war and are on the look-out for any perceived weakness in their opponent. The predictable result is a huge arms race and a cold war spreading across the stars, requiring only a spark to set the galaxy aflame. Drawn into this game of high stakes are ordinary men and women, their peaceful lives, hopes, and aspirations swallowed by the vortex of conflict and distrust. This is their story. Cover art by Rhodex Designs (FB). Hope you like long chapters and adjectives. Note: English is not my first language. Another story set in the same universe, written by a good friend

Collection of Short Stories?
I lied it's even less than a short story more like a collection of disparate situations. Also you can read this completely out of order. There is no connection between the chapters. Read any that interest you.
