《Flock of Doves》54- Thanus - They abandoned their children...

The Sentinels went into a full-blown panic. Our people rough-lighted out, flashing off in groups as fast as possible. We had to make split decisions, but the actual children had left a while ago. Kiromir had already started a slow evacuation. Feathers, I loved that stupid man. He had a nose for trouble sometimes that made my own instincts seem like crap. Either that, or he got petty with Rolyn. Either way, Wanderers win.
Meticulously, Kiromir executed the evacuation. All the training that he’d done with the flock paid off. Conditioning us for keywords and to act on Anil without thought was brilliant. Everyone marched to his shouted words. Only a few of us remained, scurrying among the Sentinels. They grouped up, taking the rough light haphazardly. They had no evacuation plans, or if they did, they weren’t following it. Stragglers scurried about, clueless, damn near kids; some were kids, left behind by parents and scrambling for groups for rough light.
Who the hell leaves their kid behind!?
“HOLD!” I shouted and grabbed a few straggling kids. I shoved them to a haphazardly grouped circle.
“Don’t leave the kids behind!” I snarled. I had done just that. They took the rough light, and I looked up to see Kiromir and the rest of our remaining hunters helping. They made them organize rough light groups.
Gunfire racketed off in the distance as I checked empty tents, collapsing them as I went. The gunfire roared, and I could see holes being punctured through the canvas.
A strangled cry sounded out as Kiromir shouted.
“WANDERERS, GROUP UP!” His Anil triggered them, sending the remnants of us into a huddle. We did all we could. Our duties were to the flock, then family. The Sentinels were not our flock, nor our family. At this point, we aided the enemy.

The bullets didn’t stop; my gut wrenched as I saw one of the Sentinel warriors running, fleeing from a fucking human with a gun. A stupid little human with a stupid little bullet! The Sentinel’s body was a tank compared to me, broader and more defined. He could probably eat lead for breakfast and be fine…
I almost laughed at the scene and froze as I watched him jolt. Bullets hit from behind, and the front of his chest blossomed with bright red blood. The gunfire drew closer, bullets pinging off things around us. Another shot hit the Sentinal soldier. He jolted as a red mist sprayed from the side of his neck.
He looked down with slow-motion horror and fell to his knees. His body writhed, and his mana took him from within, leaving him just a slew of ashes. Finally, Kiromir, Krell, and Quinn stared on with horror as Nodak shouted a name in utter shock.
“RETREAT,” I shouted as Nodak readied himself to charge.
“THAT WAS MY COUSIN,” Nodak shouted as he covered his mouth in horror. We didn’t often see our own die, not like this at any rate.
“So is half the flock, ya dimwit!” I shouted back. Nodak couldn’t decide whether to move or follow orders. This would cost him later because I couldn’t trust his judgment anymore. So, I grabbed him and ran towards Kiromir, Nodak fighting me the entire way.
“He’s gone! Suck it up and move on. It’ll be you or I next,” I said.
“We can’t just let these assholes get away with it!” Nodak headed into a full panic blitz. I felt his ikris twitching, lost in shell shock.
Earlier, He watched Niala and Gaff get taken, then the explosion, and now, all around us, we could see fleeing Sentinels dropping and being consumed. Nodak couldn’t fight me forever.
Kiromir waved us down, and I don’t know if he saw what I did. His mind was in other clouds, with Niala.
Flock first, then family.
They were my family now.

Plague Doctor
The once-bustling and noisy streets were now filled with an eerie blanket of silence. Hoarse and frenzied whispers lingered high above the heavens, and an indescribable ancient giant lurked in the shadows of the bottomless ocean. A mysterious plague had outbroken, and natural disasters wrought the Earth. Global pandemic and catastrophes had the panicked masses seeking illusory shelters from the devastation, day and night. A bloody shower poured over the land as the streaks of lightning tore across the sky, illuminating the ill-intentioned gathering of ravens above. Nevermore, nevermore, quoth the ravens. “We can see that this malformed creature has twelve pairs of ribs like humans, but also has a “transverse bone” that humans do not possess…” In the medical school, Gu Jun continued bringing down his scalpel, illustrating the abnormal thoracic structure of the malformed cadaver on the dissection table to the surrounding students. Ominous and treacherous times had descended! Truth and logic had crumbled, order warped into a frenzy. Humanity can only forge ahead through the power of intelligence and wisdom.

AV Online was just a flash in the pan—a harsh, experimental land which lost most of its players in mere weeks. Only the dedicated few remained, carving out their destinies in corners of the vast abandoned world. Lily Quinn wasn't one of them. With a career worth millions in the esports world, she didn't have time for a game like Avo—but when an exclusive beta test for the new version showed up on her doorstep, she couldn't say no… as much as she wanted to. Literally hooked into the simulation, Lily reluctantly entered a world beyond anything she'd ever dreamed of. Accompanied by seven other beta testers desperate to save their beloved game, Lily dives into a vibrant, beautiful world, where mystery and adventure waits around every corner. Despite her reservations, Lily finds a joyful escape in Avo, shattering her cold, hollow reality. It was just a game though… until the group discovered they couldn't log out. Trapped in a game with no rules, and surrounded by cutthroat players eager to kill for a quick windfall, Lily and her ragged band have no choice but to fight their way out, or die in a game that has turned all too real. Hi there! I'm setting off on yet another adventure, come join me :3 Unusually for me, there's only one perspective this time, and it's quite a bit more action-oriented than I usually write. Don't worry, though: everything's still as character-driven as always, and I never get tired of writing dialogue. Just to acknowledge it up front: this story is heavily inspired by EVE Online and the many stories generated by that world. However, since this is a fantasy setting, not sci-fi, don't expect any real parallels. Chapter publish rate for this one will be whenever I write them, as with Epilogue. I don't expect to move as fast here though, since it's not for NaNo. The plan is chapters somewhere in the 4k-5k range, and hopefully frequently. The Last Science takes priority as always though. Special thanks to Reaver and Ace Arriande for pushing me to get this going, and to all my fellow writers whom I've stolen from been inspired by. You're all wonderful people and I love you Quick reminder: Patrons get to read ahead of what's published! Also, try my other works: The Last Science — A Tale of Modern Magic Epilogue — A Post-Fantasy Psychodrama What are you still doing on the synopsis? Get to reading! The Chronicles of Shard: Never a Name Spoken
Shard, a world drowned, yet dotted with islands, is set at odds in a war older than memory. One, Lagoon, feels remarkably at peace. With the war far from their shores, they’re free to focus on a greater concern . . . the witch. Imprisoned upon Gabriel’s Tear, a nearby rock jutting from the sea, the witch crooned powerless in all her telepathic fury. Though all were awash with fear, should they wander within range of her all-seeing eye. Bedtime stories were told to keep children in check, lest they be whisked away in the night and devoured. None dared speak her name. Ciroc, a young boy, was soon to be enmeshed in her future . . . and that of the council, who controlled all in an iron grip. Not even Mother Sea could predict the outcome. Woe be to this blue planet. Woe be to this blue marble called Shard.
