《The Devil is a Stoner》Prologue

Inside the Demon King's castle, demons were performing a ritual following the 8th Demon King Asmodeus' death.
"Dammit, we have to succeed quickly before the humans attack. Try again!"
The room was dark. Inside were the most skilled cultists of the demon race and the former Demon King's right hand Abigor. They were trying to summon the 9th demon king from another world. If they failed, the demon race would surely lose the endless war against humanity.
Dammit Asmodeus, why did you leave us when we were so close to victory?
Asmodeus was the greatest Demon King in centuries. He had single-handedly regained lost land from the humans, defeated multiple heroes and was the perfect leader for the demons. One day he unexpectedly died leaving the demon race in disarray.
How many have to lose their lives over this pointless war?
Abigor was the closest person to the former Demon King, however, he still wasn't qualified to become the 9th demon king. Nobody in the current generation was talented enough to hold the title. That's why they had to summon a more powerful being from another world.
"Let's offer the corpse of the Demon King as a sacrifice."
"Sir Abigor that's going too far! How dare you even think about digging up His Majesty's corpse!"
"What other choice do we have? If we fail in summoning the next demon king we will all die."
Abigor knew he was committing a sin, but he had to do it. In order to summon a powerful entity, there must be a sacrifice. The room was quiet. Everyone knew it. In order to summon a being powerful enough to defeat heroes, they have to use the strongest sacrifice possible.
After digging up the corpse, the demons attempted the ritual again.
It hurts me to do this, but this is the only way. Please forgive me Asmodeus.

The cultists poured magic into the summoning ring and it started slowly turning red. The ground started to shake as the ring got filled up with the cultists' magic.
"THIS IS IT KEEP GOING!"
Abigor screamed and desperately hoped that it would work. If the summoning failed, they would have wasted Asmodeus' corpse for nothing.
The ring got filled with magic, and light started shooting out from the Demon King's body. The summoning was going just as planned and Abigor's heart started racing.
An even greater Demon King than Asmodeus will be born!
Everyone had high hopes only for things to go terribly wrong. The summoning ring and Asmodeus' corpse shot red light so bright that the demons had to close their eyes.
The summoning had finished. The demons opened their eyes expecting great results but instead, they saw nothing. Nobody had been summoned, and the Demon King's corpse had disappeared.
How powerful must this entity be in order for this sacrifice to not work? Did we try to summon a dragon?
I'm so sorry Asmodeus, it seems the demon race is doomed.
Abigor was ready to end his life after committing the sin of digging up the Demon King's corpse and failing the summoning until someone spoke up.
"Wait, I think the summoning was a success."
"What? What do you mean it was successful?"
"Can't you sense the presence of a great being? I believe we succeeded in the summoning but something went wrong and it got sent to a different location."
He was right. Everyone in the room sensed that the summoning had succeeded. It was unknown why the summon was sent to a different location, but what matters is that they succeeded.
A bright smile appeared on Abigor's face. He was overjoyed at the thought of having summoned an even greater demon than the former Demon King.
Asmodeus, we may have succeeded in summoning a dragon.
Meanwhile in a thick forest far away from the Demon King's castle.
Where the fuck am I?

The Adventures of Alan
What happens when a university professor somehow ends up in another world, where magic bends the laws of nature? Alan is, albeit unwillingly, about to find out. As a professor of physics, he has a decent understanding of how the world works, or so he likes to think. Armed only with his knowledge, Alan is thrown into a world very different from his own. In his new reality, he will meet both friends and foe, he will seek knowledge, he will build power, and perhaps he will even find love again? Follow Alan through his adventures, and find out for yourselves how he deals with the challenges thrown at him by a new world, while struggling with the issues brought with him from his old one. * Author’s note: A fair warning. This is the first time I’ve published anything, and basically the first time I’ve written anything more than mandatory school-stuff. The story will probably have inconsistencies, grammatical errors (not my native tongue, though that excuse is getting old), and potentially confusing (missing?) plot. I will naturally do my best to write something worth reading, but my main goal in writing this story is to have fun and explore the limits of my own creativity. My hope in publishing it here, is that I’ll reach someone who enjoy the story, and can push me forward towards writing more, as it is difficult at times to find the motivation to write just for myself. Additionally, I can’t really promise to have regular updates, as I have a full-time job that often likes to take the ‘full-time’ part literally, and a sporadic social life that occasionally surprises me (happy surprises mostly, so I shouldn’t complain). I’ll aim for once a week to start with, and take it from there. Happy reading! Cover photo by Jeff Hire (/photographer/gun4hire-58415), from https://freeimages.com/.

Contact First
2039 - Earth A narrow beam energy signal appeared aimed squarely at earth from the TRAPPIST system. The communication consisted of a layered set of repeating data over several thousand wavelengths. Over the next few months scientists discovered that the lower wavelengths carried an encoded numerical language which could then be used to interpret the more complicated messages carried on the higher wavelengths. After half a year of painstaking work the signal was fully decoded. It described a small satellite launched along a precise trajectory towards the fourth planet of our solar system. Included was a package of advanced research that humanity would need to have ready in order to receive the satellite and decelerate it safely. The alien data provided the kick that humanity needed to turn from petty squabbling and unite to explore the final frontier. Major government and corporate leaders worked together to create the framework for the United Federation of Sol. UFS spaceports went from scaffolding to daily launches in every major city around the globe. Ships floated like dandelion seeds, spreading on solar wind to grow into colonies. 2397 - Mars orbit, Egeria Station The command center was a hive of activity as checks were conducted and systems initialized. Scientists flitted by like mayflies as communicators beeped and holoscreens spat out green tinted readouts. Nervous energy was thick in the air as everyone anticipated the culmination of over three hundred years of work. Massive fusion reactors under the planet's surface thrummed with barely restrained power as energy fed into a gleaming metallic maze criss crossing the planet. Metal fingers reached up, overshadowing the mighty olympus mons and trying to grab the stars. All over the solar system, people quickly turned to look as gigantic energy lances shot from the dusty fourth planet. Two years later. The same people that clapped loudly at the successful activation of project Hermes now wait with baited breath. A silver capsule trailing bright photonic sails is captured by a net of grav beams and guided with care bordering on reverence into the station. Holoscreens across the headquarters project an image of the sleek craft settling in the bay. Data connections are established and the holoscreens blink to white. Slowly an image forms on the screen. Across the headquarters people stare in wonder as a wholly alien face stares back. "Contact established. Welcome to the universe."

This collection chronicles the horrific contents of my brain in poetic form. This is not for the faint of heart. It contains terrifying moments of murder, suicide, mayhem, rituals, hauntings, and nightmares in various poetic forms from ballads to sonnets and many more. Most of these pieces are oneshot tales, but the "Haunted Blades" ballad sequence is marked with an asterisk (*) throughout the collection to denote an interconnected series of poems.
