《Weak 'Heroes'》Chapter 2: New beginnings

None of us could easily just go to sleep in this predicament. No sane person would be able to. The Priest told us that we'll be able to stay here, but the way the King reacted, how truthful is that? We know nothing about the world, and if we're so weak how will we survive on our own?
"James! Over here look what I did". Evie shouted from her bed. James, Jackson, Evie and Liam put their beds next to eachother. This wasn't unusual of them. Evie, James and Liam have had many sleepovers prior to all this. Jackson has recently only befriended everyone, so he's on the edge looking uncomfortable.
"What? Can you be quiet I'm trying to sleep". James tossed over wanting to be left alone.
Evie then shouted. "I can see my status! On top of that I can select abilities, how cool is that".
James was now wide awake. Although Evie wasn't specifically speaking to Jackson and Liam, they couldn't help be interested so they shuffled over. All four of them were now on Evies bed.
"I can see everything, I was just thinking about what my status looked like, and if you interact with the 'Skill Slots' part, you get a selection of skills". Evies eyes were glowing into nothingness, although to her it was her status.
James tried himself and had multiple selections. There were many types of magics like Lightning, Fire and Dark. Although, that didn't stick out to him. [Water Magic] did. He wasn't sure why. All of the elements were in gray writing, water was an exception. It was a light blue coloured, and he couldn't help be mesmerised by it. Compared to gray, the blue looked like it was glistening.
James picked [Water Magic] without a moments hesitation.
A window popped up stating:
[Congratulations on choosing a magic with your affinity! You will now gain +2 Magic Power].
['Water Magic Efficiency' stat has now opened up]
James instantly looked at his status.
James - Human - 15
Occupation: Mage Apprentice
Level: 1
MP: 50/50
Strength: 1
Agility: 2
Endurance: 1
Magic Power: 6 (+1)
Water Magic Efficiency: 0
Intelligence: 2
Dexterity: 0
Skill Slots:
★ Water Magic: [Level 0]
✩ Not Set
Inhereted Skill:
None
James eyes sparkled and instantly got up from the bed and shouted: "Water Magic!".
...
You could now see James in a corner, weeping whilst being bright red.
Chop Chop Chop
Evie, Liam and Jackson all hit him on the head.
James coughed and stated: "Well, anyways, I chose Water Magic, I'm going to leave the second skill option open though just in case". James was still red and trying to erase what he did from his memory.
Everyone in the room was stunned. It was quite a spacious room but everyone heard what he did.

"Hm, well I picked Bow Efficiency since I don't think it's smart to rely on my archer abilties from another world, the bows here may be completely different, like you said I think I'll leave my other skill slot open for now. Also, this is a passive skill which means I'm able to learn the bow easily.". Evie finished her sentence with a smug look. For some reason she felt smart due to her sound reasoning.
"I picked Backstab. Apparently it's a passive skill which makes me do extra damage from hitting someone from behind. I also picked Dagger Efficiency since I have no clue how to use one, so it makes sense? Theres no need to leave a slot open". Jackson didn't hesitate to put use his skill slots.
"I got Echo. Which is an active skill which makes my voice louder with magic. It feels pretty, lackluster? I don't know how to use it but the description doesn't sound very useful in combat, maybe I should be a Merchant or a Politician?". Liam was pretty set on the idea of becoming a non-combat job.
"Absolutely not. You're just going to abandon us when we're fighting for our lives? If I'm dying you're dying too". Jackson seemed pretty agitated by Liams remark.
"I agree. Although the last part is a bit extra". Evie nodded her head.
"Fine then. But what is this class? In fantasy games certain classes have certain playstyles. I don't have any".
"It's fine we'll work it out, theres no need to worry. Remember, there are experts in this castle". James punched his arm in a light hearted matter.
"Anyways, did any of you get stat bonus? I did since I have an affinity for the Water element apparently".
"I did for Bow Efficiency, +2 in Agility".
"Me too! For Dagger Efficiency, but it was +1 in Strength and +1 in Agility".
"I didn't". Liam shrugged his shoulders.
"I think it's because yours isn't affiliated to a passive skill, or some form of magic". James tried to reassure him but his sentence didn't make much sense since Echo was magic.
"I think I understand. Anyways why is the star next to it black? Is any of yours?".
All three of them nodded.
They came to the conclusion that it was because it was related to their occupation. It actually made sense.
A few hours had past and they were met with the Priestess from before. By this time, some people had fallen asleep since they had nothing else to do because by now everyone had picked their abilities.
"The King would like to see you all". Her elegant voice passed through everyone and the people were asleep awoke.
No one said anything and silently followed.

"Hello Heroes. Sorry for my actions earlier. Just know we had different expectations, but don't mind it". The King tried to laugh it off but anyone with any form of social skills would know it was insincere.
"Anyways, we've all agreed to keep you here for six months to nurture your skills. We believe it would be more benefitial to get hands on experience instead of staying locked up for a year. Please understand our circumstances. Since it's morning. Everyone will go to their respected class based on their occupation. Any outliers such as a Orator, Priest etc. please come forward".
Liam, Sam and someone called Lou stepped forward. I knew Liam was obviously an Orator, but I wasn't aware of the other two.
If I'm honest I don't really know who Lou is, I just know of her.
"Boy, do you wish to be a combatant or a Politician?".
Liam turned around looking desperate. Jackson just gave him a death stare.
"Uh-h c-combatant". Liam looked like he was about to cry.
"Unusual, but it's fine". The King looked a tad disappointed but shifted his gaze.
"The girl with glasses, yourself?"
She narrowed her eyes and stated with confidence: "Druid Apprentice".
"Also, is it possible to be treat with a bit more respect? You did basically kidnap us all". She ended her sentence with a smile.
"Watch your tongue. I'm not in the mood. Unfortunately we don't have any Druids with us so you can learn with the Mages". If it was any other circumstance Lou would've been struck on the spot.
Lou rolled her eyes and went back to where she originally was stood.
"Blonde hair girl?".
"Priestess". Although she wasn't stuttering she was pale. I've never seen Sam like this so it was quite uncomfortable to watch.
The Kings eyes shone. "Would you like to protect Temples of the Light Goddess or be an adventurer? For reference, Priestess' are paid handsomely".
"Protector of the Temples I guess". Sam felt like she didn't have an option to what he was saying.
"With that concluded, everyone follow the person who shouts your occupation".
"Mages!". It was a woman wearing a pointy hat. The woman was in blue and quite... exposed. Whatever floats her boat. How stereotypical.
Six people followed including Lou who was a Druid, and myself of course.
"Swordsmen! This includes variations such as Spearmen". The man had ginger hair and was quite slender. He had a golden sword seath on his side, stood behind him were men with spears and axes. That must be the variations he was talking about.
12 people followed him.
"Tanks!". The man was huge, in full armour expect he had no helmet on, just like the Swordsman.
10 people followed him. I feel bad for them, he seems like quite a scary man.
The only people stood there was Evie, Liam, Sam and Jackson.
"Boy, over here". Liam was trying to find who was shouting him but he couldn't.
"Down here". The voice that was spoken was quite loud, and he was met with a child.
"I'm not a child. I'm 40, anyways you're the Orator who wants to be a combatant correct? Well I'm the man. I'm the only known person to be a Adventurer with the class Orator, count yourself lucky". The mans face was beyond bright, it looked like he had waited for ages to brag to someone.
With this news though, Liam flinched. The only one? Liam looked defeated.
"Don't worry! There are plenty Adventurer Orators, it's just that I'm the only one to actually survive and not die in combat at higher levels". The man genuinely thought he was comforting him.
Liam actually started tearing up.
"Stop being a baby!" The man jumped up and grabbed him by the ear and pulled Liam down.
Liam started shouting. "Jackson I won't forgive you!".
Jackson laughed to himself.
"Why are you two stood there? Go with your occupations". The King stared at them both assuming they were deaf.
"You haven't. I'm an Archer and he's an Assassin". Evie was nervous but she didn't let it get to her.
As she finished speaking, a woman with large ears walked over to them.
"I guess I have new disciples. Before we start I want you to agree to do as you're told since I'm practically baby sitting".
Evie nodded her head, whilst Jackson shouted at her.
"You're just an old hag, do you mind acting all high and mighty?". Jackson rolled his eyes.
Chop
"Okay I'm sorry!". Jackson had his finger twisted in seconds.
"Shut your mouth. I won't hurt you properly since you're quite special since you're not Elves, but I will hurt you if you don't act accordingly, do you understand little boy?". The blonde woman was not amused in the slightest.
Evie was quite shocked to see Jackson not be scared in the beginning. The woman who came up to her had a large Bow on her back whilst on her thighs having 2 quite large daggers which could be mistaken as machettes and having small throwing knives on her sleeves.
Sam was staring at what was happening over there, and before she knew it a woman tapped on her shoulder.
It was the black haired Priest.
"With me please".
"Ah! Yes".
