《Weak 'Heroes'》Chapter 6: Unexpected Power

After their sudden, yet surprising ending to a lesson - they both headed back their dorms. Obviously, this room could barely be called a dorm. It's literally just one room with beds filled in them.
As always since they've been here, they were met with disgusting looks on the way back, aswell as some people whispering 'Useless'. Jackson used to get annoyed, but after the 10th time yesterday he learned to ignore it.
We've been here for a couple of days yet we're becoming complacent with how we're being treated - how strange.
As soon as I opened the door, I was met with emptiness. Nobody was here.
"Jackson, where is everyone?". Jackson looked just as worried. It wasn't just a couple of people, it was everyone. Not a single soul inside of the room.
I was just as worried as him, but I'm supposed to be the mature one.
He grabbed my hand and ran for it. He ran for the exit - out of the castle.
"Jackson, what are you doing?". Evie tried to keep up but she was out of breath.
"Please can we just stop for a minute". Jackson looked left and right to see if there were any guards.
Jackson didn't respond to Evie. It was quite apparent that Evie was furious.
"I SAID STOP!".
Jackson turned around to see an out of breath Evie, red as a tomato.
"I'm going back". Evie rolled her eyes and turned for their dorm.
"W-wait! Everyones gone, don't you think they've done something bad to them? Maybe we're next". Jackson genuinely seemed anxious.
"We've only known Ellie for a short while but she's shown us she isn't like that. You're going too far".
Jackson trailed behind Evie. This was quite out of character for Jackson, he usually doesn't react in such a irrational manner. Despite his personality, that isn't him. Scared. Worried. Pride?
Jackson heavily blushed.
As they got back to the room they double checked to see if anyone was back.
Everyone was in their bed - stuffed.
The only two people awake looked at eachother. Evie laughed directly into his face. Jackson just stood there, blushing.
"We should tell Liam and James". Jackson coughed and turned to where they were laying.
chop chop
"WHO'S THERE?". Liam and James had the same reaction.
Evie soothed them both and explained what they were told.
"Yeah we know, we were told by the Elf girl at the meal. Oh, where were you both?". James was stumbling on his words since he did just wake up after a long day.

"It doesn't matter. Goodnight!". Evie and Jackson headed off to bed aswell.
"All four of you get up". Ellie awoke all of them.
She specifically looked at Liam and spoke. "ᚺᛖᛚᛚᛟ [Hello])". Although it had only been two days since Elo's arranged timing for him to learn Spirit Magic, she couldn't help herself. It's been awhile since she's conversed in Elvish.
"ᚺᛁ! [Hi]". Liam wore a fat smile on his face.
"ᚺᛟᚹ ᛁᛋ ᚤᛟᚢᚱ ᛋᛈᛁᚱᛁᛏ ᛗᚨᚷᛁᚲ [How far are you with Spirit Magic?]". Ellie wondered, it had only been two days so he can't be that far along, maybe he doesn't even understand me.
"ᚷᛟᛟᛞ! ᛁ ᚲᚨᚾ ᛚᛖᚨᚱᚾ ᛏᚺᛖ ᛋᚴᛁᛚᛚ [Good! I can learn the skill]". Liam stuck his thumb out whilst closing out his sentence.
Ellie squinted.
"ᛁᛏ'ᛋ ᛒᛖᛖᚾ ᛋᚢᚲᚺ ᚨ ᛋᚺᛟᚱᛏ ᛏᛁᛗᛖ ᛈᛖᚱᛁᛟᛞ? [It's been such a short time period?]". Ellie was confused.
"ᛁ ᚷᚨᛁᚾᛖᛞ ᚨᚾ ᛁᚾᚺᛖᚱᛁᛏ ᛋᚴᛁᛚᛚ [I gained an Inherit skill".
"ᛁᛏ'ᛋ ᛈᚱᛟᛒᚨᛒᛚᚤ ᚱᛖᛚᚨᛏᛖᛞ [It's probably related]". Liam nodded to himself.
Ellie was blown away. She thought these heroes were useless, but I guess theres a diamond in the rough.
"Okay, all of you with me. Spirit guy, learn Spirit Magic, I'll show you what to do". Ellie was pleased with this outcome.
When she said learn Spirit Magic, she meant to select the skill. Fortunately, Liam isn't that dense.
"Evie - shooting practice, come back to me when you reach Bow Mastery 10. This time I won't go easy on you, if you don't reach it in 4 hours then I'll bump it to 15. Jackson, run until your Agility goes up by 5, same with you mage boy - except, you have to cast whilst running. That was the deal I made with Luxie, finally. Liam with me!". Ellies eyes glowed as she turned to Liam.
"Uhm, excuse me but why do I need to run? I'm a Mage so don't I just need to stand at the back?". James spoke for himself.
"Are you stupid? Or just pretending to be? Every class no matter what has to have good stamina and be able to run fast. Did Luxie tell you that? God she is one useless Teacher. Just do as I say, do you think monsters will stop chasing you when you start casting? No of course not. Oh here". Ellie passed something to James.
"She said you'd be able to make your Needles float at Water Magic Level 50. Since when you have any Element at Level 50, you're able to be almost become one with your mana, so making things float is possible". Ellie shrugged since she's just rephrasing what Luxie told her.

With that, everyone was doing as they were told.
Liam and Ellie were together since only Ellie can teach Spirit Magic in this whole castle.
"So, where do we begin?". Liam asked in a polite manner.
"Use Echo and speak in Elvish. But not addressed to me, to the spirits. You're probably going to get quite a low class spirit, but that's fine. It's possible to get a few, but with your [Spirit Magic] being level one, you wouldn't be able to control multiple".
"Don't I have to sign a contract or something?". Liam was confused, he doubts that the Spirits would aid him out of free will and kindness.
"That's old methods, what's the point in bribing a Spirit to be with you if they don't want to? They probably wouldn't even work to their capacity. Spirits are quite petty like that".
"Like Humans, spirits have different classes, and like us their bodies are unique to themselves. However, what stays the same is that every spirit has an element. Usually they'll have some form of aura around them so you can just work it out. I recommend something like a Warrior for now since we don't really know what to do about your whole situation".
"Uhm, okay".
Liam activated and Echo and closed his eyes. "ᚺᛖᛚᛚᛟ ᛋᛈᛁᚱᛁᛏᛋ, ᚨᚱᛖ ᚤᛟᚢ ᛏᚺᛖᚱᛖ? [Hello spirits, are you there?]".
His voice rang out in the whole room. Obviously, to ordinary people who couldn't sense mana you'd think nothing would've happened, however a group of Spirits were circling Liam, giggling to themselves.
"ᛁᚾᛏᛖᚱᛖᛋᛏᛁᚾᚷ. ᚨ ᚺᚢᛗᚨᚾ [Interesting, a human]". One Spirit stood out among the rest. They were quite muscly, but was the size of a child.
Liam directly looked at him. "ᚹᚨᚾᛏ ᛏᛟ ᛒᛖ ᛈᚨᚱᛏᚾᛖᚱᛋ? [Want to be partners]". The spirit blushed at the unexpectedly direct question. He was direct, but he seemed gentle at the same time.
Liam smiled at him.
"ᚹᚺᚨᛏ ᛞᛟ ᛁ ᚷᛖᛏ ᚠᛟᚱ ᛁᛏ? [What do I get for it]. The warrior spirit was becoming more suspicious. The Spirit wasn't stupid. He knows what happens to Spirits. They are used and abused. That's it. They are forced to fight against their will due to contracts.
"ᚢᚺᛗ, ᚨᛞᚡᛖᚾᛏᚢᚱᛖᛋ? [Uhm, adventures?]". Liam laughed to himself.
"ᛁ ᛞᛟᚾ'ᛏ ᚱᛖᚨᛚᛚᚤ ᚺᚨᚡᛖ ᛗᚢᚲᚺ ᛏᛟ ᛟᚠᚠᛖᚱ, ᛒᚢᛏ ᛁ ᚱᛖᚨᛚᛚᚤ ᚾᛖᛖᛞ ᚺᛖᛚᛈ. [ I don't have much to offer, but I really need help". Then Liam went on a tangent about the situation with his class.
The muscly Spirit smiled to himself and whispered. "ᛈᚢᚱᛖ [Pure]. Liam just looked at him confused, he doesn't really know what he said means.
"ᚠᛁᚾᛖ, ᚺᛟᚹᛖᚡᛖᚱ ᚤᛟᚢ'ᚱᛖ ᛩᚢᛁᛏᛖ ᚹᛖᚨᚴ ᛋᛟ ᚤᛟᚢ ᚹᛟᚾ'ᛏ ᛒᛖ ᚨᛒᛚᛖ ᛏᛟ ᛒᚱᛁᚾᚷ ᛟᚢᛏ ᛗᚤ ᛏᚱᚢᛖ ᛈᛟᚹᛖᚱ. ᚷᛖᛏ ᛋᛏᚱᛟᚾᚷ ᛩᚢᛁᚲᚴ! [Fine, however you're quite weak so you won't be able to bring out my true power. Get strong quick!]".
"ᚺᛟᛚᛞ ᛗᚤ ᚺᚨᚾᛞ [Hold my hand]". The spirit was shocked, nobody had treat him like this.
"ᛁ ᛈᚨᚲᛏ ᛏᛟ ᛒᛖᚲᛟᛗᛖ ᛋᛏᚱᛟᚾᚷ ᚨᚾᛞ ᛁ ᛈᚱᛟᛗᛁᛋᛖ ᛁ ᚹᛟᚾ'ᛏ ᚠᛟᚱᚲᛖ ᚤᛟᚢ ᛏᛟ ᛞᛟ ᚨᚾᚤᛏᚺᛁᚾᚷ ᛟᚢᛏ ᛟᚠ ᚤᛟᚢᚱ ᚲᛟᛗᚠᛟᚱᛏ ᛉᛟᚾᛖ. ᚨᚱᛖ ᚤᛟᚢ ᛟᚴᚨᚤ ᚹᛁᛏᚺ ᛒᛖᛁᚾᚷ ᛈᚨᚱᛏᚾᛖᚱᛋ? [I pact to become strong and I promise I won't force you to do anything out of your comfort zone. Are you okay with being partners?]". Liam was dense so he didn't really understand the power of his words. Especially since Echo was activated, the spirit couldn't help but feel enchanced.
"ᛋ-ᛋᚢᚱᛖ [S-sure]".
[Congratulations, you are now partners with Titus, the Fire Warrior, you can both speak to eachother telepathically].
Liam raised his thumb up at Ignis.
"ᚹᛖᛚᚲᛟᛗᛖ! [Welcome!]".
Liam turned to look at Ellie.
Ellie was completely red, it was like she was the embodiment of a tomato.
"Are you okay Miss?". Liam had a worried expression.
"That was beautiful". Ellie whispered to herself.
She got up and slapped herself.
"Congratulations. There isn't much for me to do with you for now, so speak to your spirit, he'll know any form of hidden potential since he practically lives inside of you. For reference, I'm pretty sure he's a middle class, so well done!". Ellie smiled and turned to Evie.
Liam squinted whilst looking at Ellie. [She's so kind, what was Evie and Jackson talking about?]. He thought to himself and assumed Evie and Jackson were overreating, until Ellie struck Evie.
Liam laughed out loud with Echo activated.

A Standard Model of Magic
The world ended, and magic came back. The part our parents didn't expect, was for Science to break on reentry. Twenty years after the apocalypse, with our nations dismantled and hidden continents unearthed, a new generation has grown up in the wreckage of 21st century civilization. For us, the fantastic is at our doorstep and we have had no choice but to fight back. Meanwhile, the laws of nature bend and break at the whims of immortal gods, all of which are now dead and none of which are content to stay that way. But we cannot afford to give up. We are the stewards of a rewritten century, in which a little luck and a whole lot of magic might make anything possible – maybe even a world better than the one we lost. A Standard Model of Magic is a complete overhaul of my old story A Storm in the Fall. I'm afraid I was unhappy with the LitRPG elements, which I don't mind reading, but I apparently loath writing. Sorry. Once I'd made the choice to decouple the story from the OF that inspired it and reconfigure the magic system to my satisfaction, little of the original plotline survived. I will be salvaging most of my original characters, and I will keep some elements which are endemic to the genre, but that is all. I don't have an update schedule which I can commit to yet, but I will try to maintain a weekly pace.(This is currently RoyalRoad exclusive, since I'm lazy. If you find it posted elsewhere, it wasn't me and it wasn't with permission) If you're interested, I've set up a discord.

Automata Annex
This Fiction is intended as a suppliment to my main title "I was reborn into a fantasy world as a magic robot?! Automata Prime". This is the appendix that would normally go at the END of the book. I will be updating the entries as new information is revealed in the story and linking back here from the author notes. Here we'll explore the world that I've crafted in the book, learn new things about the characters, and get a deeper understanding of how magic works. Think of it as an Automata Wiki.
