Congratulations! You have created a new skill
The skill you have named [Arcane Punch](C Rank)
[Arcane Punch] lvl 1: Compacts the explosive damage of arcane missiles into the users fists, and deals a devastating blow. 150 MP to activate, cooldown: 30 seconds.
Congratulations you have reached lvl 3!
How would you like to distribute your 5 attribute points?
“All agility.” I said once again. I looked around, panic had ensued among the kobold ranks. I glanced over at the commander’s dead body and noticed something shiny. I begin to move towards the pile of shiny goods. I saw a flash out of the corner of my eye. Even with all of my skill points in agility, I wasn’t able to react fast enough.
Actually, what I did can’t really be called reacting, I just turned and saw a spear tear through my thigh. The burning sensation caused my to falter and lose my balance. I fumbled and fell to one knee.
Intense hot pain overwhelmed me, and the feeling of suffocating followed. I gasped for air in panic. Another spear had pierced my throat. I fell to the ground coughing up blood and praying for death. It finally came, but in the form of being stabbed one final time in the heart. If anyone was to witness this moment, I’m sure they would say I looked oddly reminiscent of a porcupine.
~~~ You have died. Your level has decreased from 3 to 2. The 5 attribute points you distributed when leveling have also been removed. Your health and mana have fallen back down to level 2. Any gear that you are wearing that requires you to be lvl 3 will now be unequipped.~~~~
The sweet release of death. I never thought I would say it, but it’s way better than choking on your own blood. Speaking of which, that was way to realistic for my liking.
The world turned gray and dreary and I was teleported to the nearest graveyard. As I strolled back to my body, I faced a new problem for the first time since playing dreamscape. How do I safely resurrect? The last few times I resurrected I was swiftly taken to the cursed prison, aka the library. But now, I actually have to resurrect where my body is. Which is currently surrounded by hundreds of panicking kobolds that like to spear squishy humans in the throat.
I shot Pepper a quick message, “Hey, I killed one of the commanders but died in the process, can you come rescue my dead corpse.”
“Are you saying dead corpse because you’re undead, or because you died, lol. I saw your health go to zero, but I didn’t think you had killed one of the commanders, way to go. The chaos should allow a small extraction team to come get you, sit tight for 10 minutes.”
I did exactly as she said and proceeded to twiddle my thumbs while watching the group slowly move towards me on my mini map. The extraction team consisted of the rest of the 5 man party, excluding me.
When they arrived I quickly resurrected and drank a health potion to top off my health, lemony. I walked over to the corpse of the dead commander, thankfully the loot hadn’t disappeared yet
[20 silver]
[Kobold undergarments](White Tier)
Underwear used by a kobold, no special properties.
[Banner of the Kobold Commander](??? Tier)
An army is only as good as their commander. Part 1/5
This item will drop upon death.
I’m rich! 1 silver coins is equal to 100 copper coins, and I only had 75 copper up to this point. A large contributor to my new wealth was the kobold slaughtering that had taken place today. I glanced at the other items that the commander had dropped.
Underwear… are you kidding me. Not just any underwear either, apparently the new kobold fashion is thongs. And not just any thongs, zebra print thongs.
Finally, the Banner of the Kobold Commander. It drops on death, that’s weird. Items aren’t supposed to drop on death until level 10.
Since they were not close enough when I had killed the commander, the rest of the party wasn’t able to participate in the loot, but they were able to see the items appear in the party chat whenever I looted them.
“Banner of the Kobold Commander, that sounds bonkers!” Pepper bursted with excitement, “We have to go get the other 4 before some other group does!”
After some quick messages to the rest of the group leaders, Pepper filled the teams in on the game plan. Killing the commanders now severed a two fold purpose: 1) disrupting the army, and 2) potentially awesome gear.
Within 3 minutes we had 3 more parties from her guild assemble at the corpse of the commander. The 20 of us now slowly made our way towards the next commander.
Within half an hour we had arrived at our destination. Needless to say, it wasn’t an honorable duel like it had been the first time, but 20 sorcerers instantly destroying the commander via an onslaught of magic. One of the other groups ended up getting the final blow, and the piece of the banner went to some fellow named .
With 2/5 of the kobold army now leaderless, the rest of the sorcerers on the front line now were able to hold their own, and even slowly begin to push back the kobold waves.
By the time we capture the 3rd commander, the other 4 parties under Pepper’s command had made their way through the ranks and killed a commander of their own.
We practically were running to try to get to the final commander before they did, and with a little luck my group was able to get the final blow. After equally distributing 4 silver to each of us, Pepper ended up winning the dice roll for the banner.
A deep boom thundered across the valley! Dum, dum, dum dum! The steady unmistakable beat of drums was heard growing slowly near. Screaming in panic, the kobolds retreated away from the village. Dum, dum, dum, dum!
Scarcely at first, more and more players began to approach our group. Curious and worried at the same time, we were all thinking the same thing. ‘The Kobold King’.
Dum, dum, dum dum! Finally clearing a small hill 1000 meters away, the large blob of a king could be seen upon his ornate scarlet throne. Carried by 20 Kobolds, the king lazily drank out of his goblet that looked eerily like a skull.
The kobold ranks had been reformed, and the king was now leading the final charge.
The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
