《Aliens.exe》Chapter 56 - A Busy First Day Back

“Whatever,” said Jake as he pushed past all the welcome backs in the office.
“You’re even less sociable today than normal,” said Green_Turtle_Boy_369. “Why didn’t you stay in bed?”
“I need to make a phone call.”
“What? I thought you were scared of phones.”
It was true. If there was any alternative to talking, Jake took it. He knew that this conversation would be far easier on the phone though. And it would be quicker. And less traceable.
“Yes, but I need to speak to FOG. The weather people. It’s very important.”
Green_Turtle_Boy_369 shrugged and left Jake to it.

“Eric!” called Mary-Jane.
“What? Why don’t you just leave me alone?” replied Eric. It was a Friday afternoon and once again Eric was quite drunk. The difference was that before Melissa left he had generally been a happyish drunk. His new secretary Mary-Jane was a nightmare. She had this horrible habit of doing work at work which meant that Eric was regularly given things to do. Secondly, she disapproved of his afternoon drinking, and didn’t even try to hide it. Thirdly, she just wasn’t as pretty as Melissa. Eric really wished he knew where Melissa was so that he could fire Mary-Jane.
“You’ll really want to take this call,” she said. “It’s Jake Spencer.”
“What?!” Eric spat. “Jake Spencer? What’s he doing calling me?”
“Come and find out.”
“Oh Mary, I’m really tired. I had four pints at lunch-time. Put him through in here.”
“I think we should all listen to this, if we can keep him on for a while we might be able to get a trace.”
“I think you should listen to your boss for a change,” said Eric. “Transfer him immediately.”

Mary-Jane shrugged and walked off. It was very unlikely they would get a good trace anyway, Crawk was a very long way away. Eric answered his phone.
“Jake?” said Eric.
“Yes. Is that Eric Smythe? My Mom told me to call you.”
“Yes it’s Eric. Your Mom? How did she get in touch with you?”
“Lapine Death Corps. I may have erm.. accidentally blocked her since though.”
Eric afforded himself a little smile. Rosemary plays Lapine Death Corps?! Is there anyone in the universe who is not on that game?
“I’d have blocked her as well. Doesn’t stop rattling, she gave me a right headache when she was here.”
Jake thought about telling Eric off, but conflict was not his forte.
“Anyway, I was ringing to tell you that I’m now the Crawk-King Leader of War. With my help we can win this war and then you’ll know that I didn’t start it.”
Eric’s mind began to race.
“Jake, I’ve got a fool-proof plan. I’m already setting up an ambush, but with your inside help it will be even easier. Tell your captains that you have used your contacts to find out where our ships are. I will tell you in a minute, but more importantly, this is where you need to send the Crawkling ones.”
Jake smiled. He had put it in his job application that he would, but he was officially now committing treason.

The Ingress Estate
Jonathon Eucole. Soldier. Scholar. Now an Initiate, the dedication without dedication, he finds himself both prisoner and master of an arcane edifice, the Ingress Estate, which can neither be escaped, nor controlled; only diverted, maintained, and pacified. This is a gothic fantasy story, set in a world in which gods and the afterlife are not only real and known, but were both established in living memory of some of the inhabitants after millennia of arcane warfare with the being who constructed the mundane reality the humans occupy. But this isn't the story of those who colonized the afterlife at the cost of their own humanity, but a somewhat more ordinary man, in somewhat extraordinary circumstances. This is also a LitRPG-lite, which means there's a system of sorts, fragments of which can be observed through Jonathon's eyes. Don't expect level-up screens, or statistics, or indeed numbers much at all, beyond those the inhabitants of the world itself apply to understanding their own reality. It pretty much doesn't matter to the story, I mention it so those who don't want to read LitRPG at all can successfully avoid it here. I don't have any particular plan here, just some ideas inherent in the genre. This is a character concept I toyed with some years ago; an old man, bright of mind but weighed down into apathy, both by his past and his responsibilities for a terrible estate that cannot be left without stewardship. Don't expect any kind of overarching plot or story, because that's really not what this is about. Also don't expect much dialogue. Or character development. Or much of anything, really, because I've planned nothing in the way of an actual book, here. Other relevant information, if you've read this far for some reason: The MC isn't super-powerful to begin with, and probably never will be. He's a veteran with some useful skills, and the insight on how to use them, so can deal with the world's ordinary threats reasonably well, but not too much beyond that. --- Currently on hiatus, as currently the story has a rather poor ratio of effort-to-personal-payoff. I may return to this once I have a clear idea of how to get the stories where I want them. I've started a more standard LitRPG using the same system. But if you like intelligence characters who cleverly min-max their classes, it probably isn't the story for you; it's the story of a rather ordinary guy who winds up in a very similar universe.

A War Beyond Kings
Author: I made som mistakes early in the story that I will have to correct, but it will take some time. I have not abandoned this story, but I will be working on my computer and will not be active on royal road. "The elves start to leave their secure forest of Silvanwood for the first time in over two thousand years. Wizards are murdered in their own homes one by one to the dismay of the Jeidan Order of mages. The ancient ruins in Agnellia seem to have awoken after thousands of years of abandon. The flames of war are brewing, and the continent of Maëgor is about to witness a war like never seen before." Author’s note: This is a serious story, loosely inspired from many great works, which you will maybe be able to identify on your own. It is entirely original though. I’ll be working on this for hours every day, but that doesn’t necessarily means that there’ll be daily chapters. I don't own the rights to the cover image, and will immediatly take it down if the author requires so. Every chapter will be at least 2000 words. And congratulations to anyone who guesses on which language the chapter titles are written in.
