《An Enchanter's Tale》Chapter 12 – Meeting the Enemy

They departed with a small retinue of soldiers; the word was already out long before they had left. Siyu sat within the carriage with Frey, but he was not watching the scenery outside; he was watching Frey.
Frey felt the gaze and looks away from the carriage window, meeting Siyu's eyes on the opposite side of the carriage. “Something on your mind, Sir Siyu?”
“Yes. I would like to know more about you,” Siyu says.
“What would you like to know?” Frey says with a smile.
“Where you grew up, how you were raised, and your ambitions,” Siyu says, his senses heightened.
“As you know, I grew up in an orphanage. I was raised to cherish food, love my brothers and sisters, and respect my elders. I was also raised to protect what was important to me with all I had.” Frey answers, a stern look flashing across his expression. “Before you found me, my ambitions were rather normal. Grow up, find work, and support the orphanage if I could. But then I met Princess Layla, and my only ambition after that was to live my life by her side.” He continues, his expression becoming gentle.
“What about your cultivation? What does it mean to you to cultivate by Fire?” Siyu asks, hoping to learn as much as he could.
“What it means to me?” Frey ponders. “Everyone makes mistakes. The Heavenly Path, by Fire, from my perspective, is to let go. To let go of regrets and bitterness, with the knowledge that each day, we are a new person. Some things should be carried forward, while others..." He says with a smile.
“What are your ambitions in regards to cultivation?” Siyu continues to ask.
That stern expression appeared on Frey’s face again. “To gain the strength necessary so that when the day comes that I leave this body behind, I won’t have regrets.” He says.

“I see,” Siyu says with sincerity.
…
…
“Stop the carriage; the enemy is near,” Siyu says with his eyes closed.
Frey looks at him and calls out, “Stop the carriage, and look out for the messenger birds.”
…
…
After receiving the message from Fort Plum, they travel further down the road and set up camp as they were ordered to. From where the Paz soldiers had gathered, they would have to cross a hilly region north of them. The soldiers from Fort Plum have set up an ambush there, placing hundreds of archers atop the large hills. If all goes well, their party would avoid seeing any bloodshed.
And as was ideal in the military world, everything went according to plan.
They were ordered to set up camp and travel back to Fort Plum in the morning.
Siyu did not let his guard down, however. He continued to watch the scenery, looking for any changes but could find none. Only when it was deep into the night did he enter his tent, but as his head felt the touch of the pillow, an intense feeling of alarm shook him. Siyu sits up and shouts as loudly as he can, “Frey!”
An instant later, Siyu hears the sharp sound of wood breaking and metal clashing. He runs out of the tent as the soldiers move to surround Frey’s tent. Before the soldier could get into formation, the flash of a shadow could be seen as a figure moves past the encirclement of the soldiers. After leaving the barrier formed by the soldiers, the figure begins to move at an even faster speed down Siyu's left side. After seeing this, Siyu's body begins to move instinctively; he threw a sharp punch at the empty air to his right side, and the fleeing figure crashes to the ground as if an invisible hand had just punched his left kidney. The soldiers rush forward to take advantage of the situation, but before they could attack the figure had gotten up to face the soldiers. The figure weaved through the nearest soldiers, blood splashing and bodies falling, before the figure sprints away. As the figure got further away, Siyu could feel a gaze meet my eyes.

Ignoring the feeling, he sprints to Frey’s tent, finding Captain Friez bandaging Frey.
Frey looks up at Siyu and smiles. “I’m fine,” he says. “After hearing you shout I was able to move away in time and the assassin was only able to slash my shoulder. After that the soldiers came and the assassin left. Thank you.” Frey says with gratefulness.
Siyu could only sigh in relief and say, “Thank goodness.”
…
…
“He was at least an Expert level cultivator, but I expect he was at the Master level. The only reason I lived was most likely because he did not specialize in group fights.” Frey reports.
“How many soldiers were lost?” Colonel Vlaire asks.
“We lost two men, and one was heavily injured.” Frey answers.
“Unfortunate, but lucky. If it was a Master like me, your whole squad would have been annihilated, but even if I faced that assassin alone, it’s unsure who would come out the victor.” Colonel Vlaire responds. “Rest up for a couple of days and prepare to travel. We received a message from the King. Since it is apparent that Paz wants you dead, the King wants you transferred to the Demon Hunters, near Fortitude Forest. You depart in four days.” Colonel Vlaire states.
“The Demon Hunters? The monster hunting branch of the military?” Frey asks with some interest.
“Yes. Even though they primarily hunt monsters, they are sometimes dispatched to deal with dangerous criminals, as many Demon Hunters are particularly formidable against Hell Path cultivators.” Vlaire explains.
“Is it normal for these criminals to be Hell Path cultivators?” Siyu asks, unsure of the association.
“Yes and no.” Vlaire tries to explain. “In our military, many high ranking officers are Hell Path cultivators. Although Hell Path cultivators are more susceptible to a criminal lifestyle, often, that’s not the case. Many criminals cultivate the Earth Path, and some of the most dangerous criminals are Heaven Path cultivators. What can I say? People are people, I guess.” Vlaire says with a chuckle. “Now go; rest while you can.” She says with a wave.

Embrace the Blade [Drafts 1&2]
James Ransom grew up unable to do the simplest of life’s tasks. Legs were malformed; he was in a wheel chair as long as he could remember. Suffering from a severe form of muscular exhaustion making him unable to use his hands for long despite his resolve to fight through it. All the challenges facing him he still was able to enjoy reading and video games; but a tragic car accident will change his life forever and perhaps he will be given the opportunity to reincarnate into another world. Special thanks to Mikaelle for the Synopsis. This is my first book/fic so constructive critisism would be very nice. Expect a lot of grammatical errors but hopefully not too many spelling errors. Explanation for the tags; Action/Adventure/Fantasy: These don't really need an explanation, Comedy: I'll try to be funny hopefully I won't fail miserably, Romance: I like romantic sub-plots, LitRPG: No explanation needed but I am using my own system, Reincarnation/Summoned Hero: Not sure which one applies here I'm inclined to think both so I put both, Reader Interactive: I put this one here for my own amusment I'll allow everyone to help create the MC's love interest and maybe a few other things we will also hold a few contests.. Male Lead: self explanitory, Magic: Also easy, Strong Lead: Think of this as more of a weak-to-strong tag the MC will be OP but not till later in the story. Warning: Since this fic is labeled as 'Strategy' I believe that the readers should know as much as possible about the situations presented in the story so they can reach their own conclusions about how a fight could have been won or lost. That means: there are a lot of information dumps early on. I don't know how long I'll be able to write this fic but I promise to keep my few readers informed in case I decide to drop it or something.

Ars Magica
Our vision comes back into focus. Our eyes, while being able to perceive the immediate surroundings, still leave us with our minds uncomprehending towards what is actually occurring. Sure, there are definitive things that we can focus on, like the fact that we're either out upon the open sea or the open ocean, there not being much of a difference with no land in sight, as well as the fact that we appear to be upon a haphazardly constructed metal boat, whose seams are barely able to keep a hold of themselves in the crashing waves. However, that does not let us understand what exactly is causing the waves in the first place. If we were to rewind time, we'd find ourselves upon a calm sea under a peaceful sky with the only difference, being a small whirlpool that would be the precursor towards this uproar around the boat. Lightning flashes in the sky, with no clouds being near, and anyone actually manning the boat has either died towards the cause of the smashing tides in the first place, or are fighting amongst the flashes of lightning, all while trying not to become devoured, demolished, and utterly decimated by the beast roiling in the whirling waves. To better understand exactly what is happening here, there is one singular event that needs to be understood, that needs to be explained, and that is the arrival of a creature named Dave. Stepping back from current events and going towards this creature's first appearance in the world, we begin to hear the sound of water slowly dripping across rocky ground. The cavern is utterly silent except for this one constant, its cause feeding channels downwards, sloping towards cracks in the rubble along the floor from broken stalagmites and stalactites. And there, lying on top of something which had fallen over recently, judging from its cracks, is a person, the creature named Dave. His form is fast asleep, either from the impact or from an intoxication, judging from the smell upon its breath. A bright light suffuses into it for a second, giving life towards the pale skin, before it slowly dies down back to the comfortable black of the cave that it's within. Before this moment in time, Dave did not exist in the physical world. At least, not in the reality that he finds himself born into. We do not know whether or not his existence is simply a cosmic joke, or something that is being played out on purpose. All that we do know, is that one moment, the body was not in the cave, and simply formed in the next. The actual earliest time that we know Dave exists, is the interpolation of the memories of J-209, which we'll begin looking into shortly to gain context towards the coming narrative that is being written and hastily trying to keep itself written. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warning: This story has several things which might turn its readers away. The first is that this story has shifting points of perspective. Don't worry about that previous sentence too much though, as the main character will always have a first person perspective associated with them. However, any other character from which we're viewing the story from will either be in third-person, as we are not necessarily in their shoes at the moment, or in first person, given that the narrator is an actual physical presence within the story. For the most part, chapters will be self-contained with their perspectives, so there will not be an abundance of switching perspectives within the same chapter. The most that an average reader would have to worry about is the fact that perspectives can switch between chapters. The second thing is that the main character is a bit on the 'special' side of things. He's not exactly mentally there most of the time, so there will be some times that his personality or his thoughts do not actively align with his actions. The third, and final thing of importance, is the fact that past the first couple of chapters, nothing has been planned in advance. There are arcs and plots that I want to do, want to implement, or have already been set into motion from our main character's introduction to the world, but the method that I use for my story writing and generating leads towards a bit more random chance being enabled. Basically...there's a lot of dice rolling behind the scenes. To not complicate the story further than its regular LitRPG elements, the rolls will not be publicly available. However, there will be knowledge within the author's notes on whether or not there were positive or negative critical rolls that had occurred within the chapter. You have been warned. Updates: Mondays & Fridays (Schedule permitting) Typical Chapter Length: (2,000-3,000)

THIRTEEN (Evie's Perspective)
This is the 2003 movie, Thirteen, told from the perspective of Evie Zamora. We got Tracy's point of view, but what about Evie? Why did she do the things she did?I've seen a few different interpretations of Evie's perspective and I decided to give it a go. This is how I think Evie thought and the reasons behind why she did the things she did. This is NOT canon, just a fanfiction, and I am not affiliated with Thirteen or Catherine Hardwick in any way.
