Chapter 22: Rivalry
----------------------------------------------------------
The rivalry is with ourself. I try to be better than is possible. I fight against myself, not against the other.
—Luciano Pavarotti

Again! It happened Again!
The king had made it into a free-for-all rather than a series of duels. The only advantage he had over all the other opponents was his mobility.
Over twenty knights were duking it out but six of them decided to gang up on him.
Three in in front of him and one in each direction
He ran towards the three in front, but before he was within reach of them he jumped back. As he was in the air he stabbed his long sword into the ground using body enhancement magic. He poured strength into his arms and pushed off performing a backflip out of the encirclement. The knight behind him turned around bewildered.
Ahahaha that was badass.
Smiling he was hit on the head.
“Gah what the fuck!?” He asked as he jumped away.
“I only punched with my hand.”
“Yeah but you’re wearing METAL fucking gloves!”
“A knight must always be aware of his surroundings and besides. You’re lucky that all I did was give you a little punch when I easily could have eliminated you.”
“Oh and why didn’t you?”
“I wanted to go one on one with the youngest royal guard in history.”
“Fine but let’s do it after we kick there asses yeah.”
“I suppose I could help with these six.”
Edin and the unarmed knight both turned to look at the six who had crept closer.

I’ll let him go first.
“All yours Sir Knight,” as he waved his hand towards them.
“Fine and the name’s Lambert!” By the time he was finished with his sentence he was in front of the first man, hacking away with his mace.
Lambert dodging the first knight’s slash used his mace to smash it into his head. Being a tournament the mace was unspiked but still was deadly. He moved fast taking out two of the knights.
Meh I’ll let him take care of it and tire himself out.
The knights had decided that Lambert was the bigger threat of the two so Edin just stood there waiting.
“Oi! Help me!”
He sighed.
“Yeah! Yeah! Don’t get your panties in a bunch!”
Even though training was hard he found fighting more and more fun. The adrenaline of every move, every breath was exhilarating.
Putting his foot in front of the other knight’s leg and pushing him down while infusing mana into his muscles in his arms. He then kicked the man while he was on the floor. He went towards the one closest before they noticed he had joined the fight. He grabbed the young man and hurled him into the group.
Afterwards with a few slashes and grunts the knights had been dispatched.
Lambert and Edin were looking at each other.
“You know I watched you at the last tourney.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah and I thought to myself I could have defeated him and then you go join the royal guard.”
“Okay...”
The king had made it so only knights under the age of twenty could participate. His decision made the amount of participants very low since most knights were being knighted at twenty one. Then there were the men who were so talented they were knighted when they were in their late teens. A special breed of talented young men eager for glory; Edin was facing one such of this breed.

Taking his helm off Lambert entered his stance with his mace.
“If I were you I wouldn't take the helm off.”
“No it’ll restrict my vision plus that’s how the last guy lost.”
“Is that so?”
Any fight between knights was quick. They both knew this wasn't going to be a battle of resistance.
They both moved running with all their might towards each other, parrying away each other’s weapons.
Edin got in close and elbowed Lambert breaking his nose. Thinking the fight was over Edin was head-butted by Lambert.
“Ah!” he screamed in pain dropping his sword to rub his head. Noticing his mistake Lambert brought his mace and swung. Edin, seeing the mace through his hands, Brought up his left hand in reflex to defend against the mace.
Crack!
With his left hand in pain he grabbed lambert in a headlock and threw him to the ground punching him repeatedly with his right hand and finishing it with his left elbow. Finished with his punching of Lambert’s face he laid down next to Lambert in exhaustion.
“Gawk, well fought sir.”
“... You too Lambert, broke my fucking left wrist.”
I seriously need to remember that basic healing spell.
“I wanted to break your pretty boy nose.”
“That's kinda gay,but you cant touch this.”
“Guess not.”
Edin sat up.
“Are you gonna stay on the floor?”
“Yeah as soon as I can I’m walking to the sidelines.”
“Really so much for wanting to kick my ass.”
“Honestly I’m tired and I just wanted to fight against you.”
“Not in it for the title?”
“Not really.”
Looking around the fighting had died down. He spotted Luke looking at him. Luke was wearing armor similar to his own without a helm. It seemed he was the only other knight not wearing heavy armor.
He winced as he stood up to face his cousin Luke.
No words were said, both of them entering their stances.
Their breaths resonating, neither of them moved.
Edin had use of only his right hand so defending wasn’t an option. He chose to go on the offensive.
A gentle breeze came and he moved putting strength into his legs, he lunged forward.
Luke was blocking every one of his strikes, the fight continues with slashes and parries.
Bringing his sword in a horizontal slash from right to left he made contact with Luke’s sword and immediately spun on the balls of his feet and as he turned he elbowed Luke’s face.
Luke dropped his sword and punched him and he countered by tackling Luke to the ground. Their beautiful blade dance turned to a scuffle between rivals. Luke was on top of him pressing on his left injured wrist.
He grunted in pain and shifted his weight, ending on top of Luke, Using his left elbow and right fist he hammered into Luke without missing a beat.
Gah that was close.
He was about to go crazy but he was able to regain his sense before going berserk.
A healer came to him and healed his hand. The king was paying for any and all injuries.
The crowd cheered and started chanting.
“Knight of Moonlight!”
“Knight of Moonlight!”
“Knight of Moonlight!”

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.

Directorate: Nationbuilding in Apocalypse
A nation is just a means of survival. Metro Manila fell within 5 months of the first report of cannibalism. Once a hyperurbanized region of 15 million inhabitants, it's been reduced to a dead, greenless shell. Most of the infected had since left to ravage the countryside. The central government was nowhere to be found. Among the survivors who clung to the few gardens and humble plots of arable land left, one of them finds evidence that the slaughter wasn't going to just end with the first wave. Without a nation and a wall of guns, everyone will die. Directorate is an original nationbuilding webnovel that focuses on the gradual rise to power of a select few individuals, and the subsequent unification of the survivors of a devastated Metro Manila. Releases targeted at every 1 to 3 weeks. If there are no chapter updates after 3 weeks, there will be a progress update. Number of releases targeted at a maximum of 100 chapters.
