《The Divine Mortal》Chapter 28: First Round Test

"Those who enter, your life be at stake!"
In front was a stone plaque on which these eight words were written in fresh blood. Just looking at it quailed the spirit.
"The Immortal Dao is merciless. No turning back on the road to being an Immortal!”
Another stone plaque.
"Martial Cultivation is plunder. The strongest rule!"
The last stone plaque, and also the biggest.
"That's right. Martial cultivation is taking what one can from heaven and earth. Might is all there is and what determines what is right." With his rough life, Roy deeply felt these words.
At present, roughly 300 disciples were in the dark belly of the mountain. Because they were all competitors, there was some distance between them.
The official examination was about to start, Bubu and the other was at the exit of the path. There, countless Heavenly Cultivators awaited and watched. As for Roy, who wanted to enter the immortal sect, this was the most important challenge of his life!
It was impossible for him not to be worked up.
After waiting around for a few more minutes, a middle-aged man wearing colorful robes appeared before them out of nowhere.
“Welcome to the Supreme Sword Sect disciple examination! Before we begin the real examination, we must verify whether or not you are actually qualified to be here!” The middle-aged man spoke to them in a loud and domineering voice.
“Below me is a transportation gate that will teleport you to the real examination halls. However, only those who have the Supreme Sword Sect Exam Token will be teleported to the examination hall. Everyone else will be teleported randomly to the mountain range outside, and there are many powerful magical beasts that roam that area, so if you are thinking about sneaking into the disciple examination, I urge you to rethink that decision because we won’t take responsibility for whatever happens to you afterward.”

“Now, if you are ready to partake in the Supreme Sword Sect disciple examination, step forth and enter the portal!” he waved his hands in a strange manner. All of sudden, a massive portal appeared before the participants.
Woooong!
After he finished speaking, the middle-aged man walked into the portal's gate as a demonstration, disappearing into the portal.
And immediately afterward, the people there began rushing towards the gate. Meanwhile, there were more than just a couple of people there who decided to remain standing still and not approach the gate, clearly hesitant to continue.
As for Roy, he followed the mass and entered the gate.
A second after entering the gate, along with every person that entered the gate, Roy was transported to this vast and empty grassland that stretched to the horizon. Furthermore, there was another gate that resembled the one they just entered a few miles away from their location.
“W-Where are we?”
The people there were puzzled as to why they were brought to this empty grassland. After all, what could they possibly do in this place that is related to the examination?
After waiting for a few minutes for everyone to gather, the middle-aged man with the colorful robes began to speak, “This will be your first examination. In this vast grassland that spans over 30,000 miles, there are 999 hidden jade slips, and only those who have a jade slip may advance to the next stage of the examination. You all have three days to advance to the next test by entering the gate over there before you are automatically disqualified and kicked out of this place.”
“Does anyone have any questions?”
The participants there immediately raised their hands.
“What kind of examination is this? I don’t see how finding a needle in a haystack has anything to do with becoming a disciple of the Supreme Sword Sect!”

The middle-aged man turned to whoever just spoke and said, “This is an examination based on your luck— we are simply testing your fate— whether you are fated to become a disciple or not. Although you may not understand it, one’s fortune and destiny play a huge role in the cultivation world, and without either of these, you will never achieve anything great in the cultivation world, and our Supreme Sword Sect has no use for someone like that.”
“Senior, what exactly do you mean by ‘hidden’? Are they buried underground or are they just placed around this grassland?” Another participant asked a few moments later.
The middle-aged man smiled at the participant’s question and said, “There are 997 jade slips resting above the ground normally with two special jade slips buried within the ground. If any of you manages to find the jade slip buried within the ground, you will receive a very special reward at the end of the examination if you pass the examination, or you can exchange the jade slip to automatically become a disciple. However, if you do that, you will forfeit the reward. The choice is up to you.”
After answering a few more questions, the middle-aged man said, “The first examination begins!”
Immediately after the middle-aged man ended his sentence, the thousands of people gathered there began spreading out in every direction and running around with their heads looking left and right without stopping.
Meanwhile, Roy stood there with a calm expression on his face.
‘This is not much different from when I had to pick unknown materials in the forest. I should be able to find it with my skill ,’ Roy thought to himself.
‘Hm? Why’s this young lad just standing there?’ The middle-aged man turned to look at Roy after noticing his odd behavior. However, when he saw the powerful aura subtly emitting from Roy’s body, he immediately gasped in shock.
‘Spirit Formation Stage?! Why the hell is someone like that participating in our disciple examination?! He could instantly qualify to become a Main Disciple if he spoke to a sect elder!’
But, the flow of his energy is-- quite strange.. I almost thought this kid was a mortal..
Roy was constantly releasing the spiritual qi that he kept inside the Voidweaver Ring, that's why the old man found it strange that the energy flow didn't quite come as 'natural' in his eyes.

Only the dedicated few remained, carving out their destinies in corners of the vast abandoned world. Lily Quinn wasn't one of them. With a career worth millions in the esports world, she didn't have time for a game like Avo—but when an exclusive beta test for the new version showed up on her doorstep, she couldn't say no… as much as she wanted to. Literally hooked into the simulation, Lily reluctantly entered a world beyond anything she'd ever dreamed of. Accompanied by seven other beta testers desperate to save their beloved game, Lily dives into a vibrant, beautiful world, where mystery and adventure waits around every corner. Despite her reservations, Lily finds a joyful escape in Avo, shattering her cold, hollow reality. It was just a game though… until the group discovered they couldn't log out. Trapped in a game with no rules, and surrounded by cutthroat players eager to kill for a quick windfall, Lily and her ragged band have no choice but to fight their way out, or die in a game that has turned all too real. Hi there! I'm setting off on yet another adventure, come join me :3 Unusually for me, there's only one perspective this time, and it's quite a bit more action-oriented than I usually write. Don't worry, though: everything's still as character-driven as always, and I never get tired of writing dialogue. Just to acknowledge it up front: this story is heavily inspired by EVE Online and the many stories generated by that world. However, since this is a fantasy setting, not sci-fi, don't expect any real parallels. Chapter publish rate for this one will be whenever I write them, as with Epilogue. I don't expect to move as fast here though, since it's not for NaNo. The plan is chapters somewhere in the 4k-5k range, and hopefully frequently. The Last Science takes priority as always though. Special thanks to Reaver and Ace Arriande for pushing me to get this going, and to all my fellow writers whom I've stolen from been inspired by. You're all wonderful people and I love you Quick reminder: Patrons get to read ahead of what's published! Also, try my other works: The Last Science — A Tale of Modern Magic Epilogue — A Post-Fantasy Psychodrama What are you still doing on the synopsis? Get to reading!
