《The Chronicle of the Ex-God of War Who's Given a Second Chance》Chapter 2: An Absurd Request

The morning has come, a rather loud sound of a snoring old man could be heard coming inside Morizaki residence. Outside of people's expectations, these snores actually originated from a young boy named Ryu. Because of yesterday's training, his body fatigue appears to be that great that it could make him sleeping noisily like this for the last 4 hours.
Woken up by the sounds of a bird chipping, Ryu subconsciously directed his sight toward the clock wall, which currently points at 6.30.
"Let's sleep again... I don't have anything to do at these hours anyway. "
"Wait... " Seem to be forgetting about something, Ryu didn't close his eyes yet. And instead, out of sudden, he hurriedly sprang up from his bed before immediately moved towards the dresser, "I must go to school!"
"As long as I remember, the school bell is ringing at 7.00 sharp. I might've arrived in the nick of time if I'm running all the way toward there." Picked up any formal outfits that he could wear, Ryu quickly took off his attire to change his clothes. But, perfectly after he finished doing so, a foul fragrance successfully penetrated up his nose, "Fuck! How the hell I can smell this bad!?"
"Should I take a shower first?"
"Argh, But I don't have time to do that."
Going back and forth, Ryu's in a dilemma between those two choices.
In the end, he couldn't stand the idea of coming into the school with strong stenches coming out from him as he decided to run straight ahead toward the bathroom.
***
At Helbram Soul School, Ryu can be seen bowing toward his teacher while giving constant apologizes for not showing up in the school at the scheduled time.
Seeing this, Mrs. Farroh sighed, "This made it the 327th one, but I'm surprised that you could reflect on your action like this."
In his past life, when he's still a brat like this, Ryu was famous for being a lazy, mischievous, and stupid kid. So it became a natural thing for him to have this kind of behavior. But, the unusual one is seeing him apologizing from this very event. "I'll accept any form of discipline," Ryu stated resolutely.
"Consider yourself lucky that I'm in a good mood today, I will pass this on if you can answer one of my questions, alright?" There's some sort of playful tone behind Mrs. Farroh's words, she is actually a good teacher. But, sometimes, she's little mischievous although it's not her real intention to do so. She just wants to make her students wary for being late.
"Now, my question is, how many Class types in 1st-tier does this world possess?" The answer to this was actually not explained yet by her. The day before, she merely describes how everyone in this room is a Novice, and for them to become a Tier 1, it's necessary to become a level 10 first.
Because Class is still a big mystery for the world, she didn't expect Ryu to answer it correctly as he was famous for being an idiot. Every time he's late, Mrs. Farroh would always ask this kind of question that she did not teach yet to embarrass him.
"Must I answer this kind of question, Miss?"
"Of course, if you can't, you must stand in front of the room for 2 hours straight," replied Mrs. Farroh while pointing her finger toward the door.
"Well, if you insist, There are six Basic Classes in this world. There's Veteran, Archer, Mage Disciple, Brute, Druid Apprentice, and Cleric, there's also a Special Class called Thief."

Mrs. Farroh can't help but feel astonished with her mouth open when hearing Ryu's explanation, she thought that Ryu is bluffing. There no way such a dumb kid like him can understand this, but out of all 7 Classes that Ryu blurted out, all 3 types of Classes that she known are in it. It's Veteran, Archer, and Mage Disciple. Actually, it's the most well-known Class in the city. Mrs. Farroh itself is a Mage Disciple at level 16.
At that level, Mrs. Farroh was already considered an extraordinary individual with her age that only have been 22 years old. Reaching a total of 26-levels is an impressive feat.
"Okay... I think that's correct, listen well all of you, I'm not so sure about the rest of four Classes, but three of them is indeed a correct answer. That's a Veteran, Archer, and Mage Disciple. As the name said, maybe you could take a Veteran if you're interested in being a swordsman. You might prefer Archer if you are good at aiming, and the last you can pick Mage Disciple if you're talented at magic casting."
"But, the Class you get is actually based on your stats, so you can't simply choose whatever you wanna get." Mrs. Farroh then continued with her explanation; "Let's get into the main topic now. Because this semester will gonna end soon, I will do a level scanning for the next grade Division allocation. It's separated between A, B, C, or F Division."
"Okay, we'll start from... Let's see, since you're already in the front of the room, I'll scan you first. Ryu, open your hand."
Nodding, Ryu gives out his hand while wearing an expression like he doesn't care about this. After all, he already knows his current levels from yesterday. Even if he's training like a madman, it still takes one month for the quickest method to get a level up unless something like a miracle happens to him.
"Let's see...Scan..." When she said the chant, a magic circle was formed from Mrs. Farroh hand before a flame starts to lit up from Ryu's palm. "Transparent, it's big in terms of size, I see..."
Writing the result on her note, Mrs. Farroh then added, "You're at level 4 now. Based on your level, you'll be sent to the B-Division for the next semester, understood?"
"Yes, Mrs. Farroh," Ryu said while nodding its head off.
"You can take your seat Ryu, next is... You..." Mrs. Farroh's mood appeared to got brightened up as she didn't expect even a lazy student like Ryu could reach level four. Maybe it's a good sign for the inspection.
...Meanwhile, in his seat, Ryu's quietly sitting still, looking calm from the outside while actually got so shocked by the scanning result. Did he leveled-up in a single day? Has another miracle occurred to him again?
Encountering another unexpected circumstance involving his body. Ryu started to think about a chance of his body only needs a little more push to achieve level four. However, remembering the size of yesterday's flame, he soon denied that possibility as he at least needed 1 month at the fastest for his level to gain an increase.
With a smile on his face, Ryu got a hunch of what's might've happened to him. He's probably got some kind of unique body in the process of his time-lapse. If an average person requires six months to level up, he only needs about two weeks or so to level up, and that's when he's not in a rush.
At this time, he definitely wants to be more intense and focused on his training. So calculating what will happen in the future, maybe it only takes 5 days to one week for Ryu to level up.
'Wait, if my body becomes so gifted like this, maybe hitting a level 100 in all of the tiers is not a pipe dream anymore!'
'If I'm consistent with this growth, I'll hit level 100 for a novice at the age of 16.'
'And, if I don't encounter any problem, I'll get a God Tier Class at 8 years from now on! Damn, what kind of heavenly body is this!?'
Losing inside his thoughts, Ryu didn't notice that the scanning for students is almost over. "Okay, next students. Please come forward to test your level."
After the call, a girl with a slim figure could be seen coming to the front of the place. She has a long and slightly wavy orange hair and skin as white as jade. All of her eyes, nose, and lips were a perfect fit with her noble face.
'Ayano...' Seeing his wife again, in an instant, Ryu felt an indescribable joy filled his heart as a tear begins to flow in his face. Of course, no one noticed this, as the focus of the students was gathered at the purple-eyed girl.
Arrived into the front of the room, Mrs. Farroh immediately used the skill before Ayano's palm. "Scan..." With that, a bronze-colored flame can be seen coming out from Ayano's opened hand. Its size is a small one.
"... Level 7..." Mrs. Farroh announced the result while being shocked a bit, concurrently, all students went speechless after they heard this. But before long, they began to shout out of excitement. After all, how can they not? It's the arrival of a new talented individual!
In This City, the one who got that much talent is only Mrs. Farroh and the Lord of Forest City. And he's actually Ayano's father, so in a sense, it's to be expected that his daughter's talent is as big or maybe more prominent than him.
"Well... Ayano, it seems you'll have a bright future awaits you. Congrats, you will go to the A Division."
"Yes, thank you, Miss."
Although Mrs. Farroh is a bit sad that someone can match her, she's also delighted that Forest city will have one more genius. There's also another promising individual who could match this talent, and that's Inazuma, the son of Forest City minister.
"Next student, please come forward to test your levels."
Instantly, a boy with short black hair and around 5.7-feet in height comes forward. His pair of blue eyes seem to be able to capture any type of girl to fall in love with him instantly.
While he comes forward, the majority of the girl starts to screams or admiring him silently from a distance. And, sure enough, when Mrs. Farroh scans him...
"Level 8!" This time, Mrs. Farroh really can't hide surprise, She couldn't believe that Inazuma really exceeds her talent. But, after a while, Mrs. Farroh knows that Inazuma likely achieved that because he's from the royal family. He must get trained really hard to attain that level.
"Wow Inazuma, I'm seriously amazed by this... If there's an S Division, I would definitely put you in there. Your father must be very proud of you."
"That praise is too much, Mrs. Farroh." Although Inazuma accepted the compliment humbly, he actually quite dissatisfied with the result. Before the scanning, he was confident that he could reach level ten before this semester ends. After all, his father is an excellent alchemist that keeps making him an extraordinary potion that boosts his training efficiency by two times. Followed by his rough training routine, he should have reached that level already. But it seems, he's too confident about himself.
After a short time, finally, all of the students got their level scanned.
"Now, since it is over, I will give you a summary of the Division that each of you will go in the next semester. First, for the A-Division: Inazuma, Ayano, Ryo, Verdi, and Mizuki."
Mrs. Farroh only picks five students to enter the highest Division. The remaining students either go to the B or C Division because the average student's level of her Division was about 3 or 4. Some also achieved level 5. The F Division was only for a student that reached level one, it's also called a failure group.
"That's ended the report, do you guys have any question?" Hearing the result, Ryu instantly raised his hand to ask a question, or rather an unreasonable request.
"Wait, Miss, I'm quite unsatisfied with the decision. Can I go to A Division?" At first, Ryu was compliant with entering the B-Division as it wasn't that important for him. But after knowing Ayano was allocated into the A-Division, it became a different matter.
"Is there any reason for that? I think B-Division is good enough."
"Isn't it obvious that I deserve to be on A-Division?"
After hearing this, instantly, more than half of the Division students laughed so hard. They're all thinking how a lazy student dared to be that bold and demanding while he's only at level four, the bottom of B Division. Also, Ryu must've leveled-up not too long ago, and that made him so lucky that he could be on B-Division, now he wants to be placed in A-Division?
"Hmph... A weak person like you want to be on A Division? Don't joke me out."
"What!?" From the back of his seat, Ryu has heard something unpleasant entering his ears. When he looks at his end, there he saw a boy with a green spiky hair and eyes glaring at him sharply. That boy is Ryo. He's the disciple of a Jinchi, a level 18 tier-2 swordsman. Jinchi's honored as a ninth of the ten most influential individuals in the Forest City.
"Wow, you're just lucky to get into A Division, yet can be that arrogant, huh?"
"What!?, I'm the disciple of Jinchi, you don't know me? I'm getting to the A-Division is not a coincidence but a certainty!"
In the middle of that banter, Mrs. Farroh instantly stops the conflicts between those two students with the clasp of her hand.
"That's enough! If you guys want to settle something, we could do this by scheduling a duel in an arena."
"Fight? That's a good idea, Mrs. Farroh! I can teach this scoundrel a good lesson there. Ryu, if you can win against me, I will swap Division with you. But, if I win this one, you'll go into the F-Divison, how bout' that?"
"That's sounds goods to me. What's the rule Mrs. Farroh?"
"It's simple if you can make your opponent surrender or unconscious. You will win."
Hearing the rules, Ryu suddenly got a sly idea as his mouth curled into a smirk. "Hmm, let me tweak the rule a bit. Ryo, if you can hurt me, you will win, and if I can make you unconscious or surrender, I will win. That will make the duel more interesting, right?"
"What did you just said!? Did you really want to get beaten so fast? Why don't we duel right here and now, huh!?"
Ryo wants to quickly beat the ass out of the guy in front of him. Why Ryu dare to act so arrogant like that in front of him? Although Ryo has good progress for his physical training, his mind is still shallow. He can easily be provoked by Ryu.
Knowing that Ryo took his bait quickly, Ryu was laughing inside his heart, although he knew that messing with a 14 years old kid is wrong. But, if it's required, he would not hesitate to do that.
Ryu itself is not to ready for this match, so, for now, he mustn't respond to the provocation. "Relax, there's still tomorrow. Don't be too hasty. We can take our time, aren't we?"
"So, You're running away now? After acting all mighty like that?"
"Of course, It would be troublesome if I lose after all. So, for now, I'll retreat." Ryu said these lines shamelessly. He thought it will be fine to be a clown from time to time, as it's one of his strategies as well.
He needs to shame himself to make Ryo suspend the match. All Ryu needs is just one day after all. After Ryu said this, the whole students start to laugh at Ryu again. How can Ryu be so shameless, just a second ago he's provoking Ryo like he's nothing, but now he's retreating.
"I see you're regretting it now, huh? However, it's too late for that!"
"Then what could I do for you so that I can postpone this match to tomorrow?"
"How about you kneel to me?"
Hearing Ryo demand, Ryu becomes a little hesitant about it. Doing a kneel to someone will surely kill his reputation. He'll absolutely be seen as an easy target to get bullied by another student in the future if he did it. But, he already resolved to do so, he kneeled to Ryo, even until his head touched the floor.
Some of the students laugh, but some of them just stay quiet and pitying Ryu from a distance. To begin with, it was Ryu's fault, after all. He keeps spurting a nonsense one after another, is he possessed or something? Did he just get a snap out of it now?
"What a beautiful sight," sneered Ryo before he grins broadly, "I don't believe that there's indeed someone who doesn't have a single piece of pride in them."
After that, he continued to mock Ryu until he's satisfied. It can't be said that Ryu is content with it, but what can he do now? He could only bear with it. Finally, Ryo agrees to postpone the match before leaving up the school.
"Dude, are you changed?"
Narukami immediately goes to Ryu's side after seeing the scene that just folded.
"Hmm? I never changed at all, and this is what I usually do, right?"
"Of course not, Usually, you will run straight away when someone does that kind of thing to you, but now you even make that absurd conditions. The difference between Ryo and your level is two, you know, it's a year gap."
"Rest easy...I got this one, trust your pal."
"It's good if you can be that confident, but do you think you need help with the training and strategy? I think I could help you a little."
Seeing his best friend worried about him, Ryu can't help but smiles.
"Thanks for the concern, but I want to try doing it myself."
"Well, okay, if you get defeated, we will be on the same Division again, you can think that as the comforter when you're losing."
"That's more of the reason that I can lose this thing."
"What did you just say!?"
Giving a light joke to his best friend to ease him up a bit, they then continued to talk for a while before Narukami had to go back to his house.
After seeing Narukami off, he instantly goes inside to his residence.
"Kid, you have a good time humiliating me before."
"Let's see how well you fare against me tomorrow."

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
