《When Paths Converge: A MHA Fanfic》5. Confrontation

Yui knew she’d been pushing it, inviting Izuku over, but her parents couldn’t have finished the job this early! Their target wasn’t even supposed to return to his house until early tomorrow morning, was her information wrong? No, she’d checked it over five times, it must have been a spontaneous decision on someone’s part.
“Yui? I asked you a question,” She grit her teeth against the woman’s tone, like she thought she was behaving like petulant child.
“He’s no one, just a boy I ran into. He’ll leave.” Her voice came out clipped, her eyes flicking to the bored look on her father’s face. He was a tall man, leanly built with messy white hair with neon green tips that matched his eyes.
“You know better to lie, dear.” Miyu stepped closer, she could see the blood splattered against her black jeans. So they’d completed the objective.
“I’m not lying, mother.” She let out a growl when her gloved fingers fisted in her hair and jerked her head back. Her arm snapped out, the punch to the throat getting knocked aside by her mother’s free hand.
“Oh? Think you’re tough shit now? You know better, brat.” Venom dripped from the tone, her sapphire eyes glowing with a gleam that could only be considered sadistic.
Yui’s body jerked at the yelp she heard behind her. Her father yanked Izuku into her line of sight by his arm. He looked so small next to her father, she glared at both of them. “Don’t touch him!” The snarl that escaped her was cut short as Miyu’s knee slammed into her stomach, only her mother’s hand still in her hair stopped her from collapsing before she locked her knees.
“You wouldn’t be so rebellious for a nobody, dear, if you don’t tell us who he is…well, we’ll just have to tie up any loose ends, won’t we, Haruto?” She turned to smile at her husband, her tone turning sickeningly sweet.
“Who are you to Yui, boy? Don’t try to lie to us.” Her father’s deep voice was monotone, she knew he didn’t care one way or the other what happened as long as he could go back to his computer.
“I-I’m j-just a Quirkless kid…S-she was nice enough to give me food..” He fumbled with his words, his eyes wide as he trembled.
Her parents both stilled, flashing each other a look before her mother started to giggle, the grip on her hair loosening before fingers slid through the locks almost gently. “Oh, sweetheart…you really brought us a little gem, didn’t you?” She stepped away to turn to Izuku.
Yui stumbled as she looked up at them, her brow furrowed. “What are you talking about?”
“The yakuza will pay a pretty penny for Quirkless kids, the younger the better, for their experiments.” Haruto’s voice droned out, but she saw the greedy light in his eyes.
“And then there’s Sensei.” Yui’s eyes widened, it felt like she got doused with ice water at the mention of that name. She had to remind herself to take in a breath and let it out. “He’s been looking for them too. Something about them being a good base material. Maybe we could hold an auction?”

Teal met emerald, Yui would have to be blind to not notice the fear in those wide eyes. Eyes that had been crying from happiness not a half hour ago. Eyes that lit up whenever she showed up at the beach. She put that fear there, dragging the little boy she’d started to think of as a brother to her home, being selfish enough to want to have one night where she could pretend she was just like anyone else.
Her eyes blazed, the ends of her hair lighting up to cast shadows on the wall. Her hands flicked out, two microchips shooting from her palms and embedding in her parent’s necks. They stiffened, and their eyes glazed over as their arms fell to their sides. Don’t hesitate, you can’t if you want to save him from your mistake!
“Run as fast as you can to the nearest police station and turn yourselves in! Go now!” she screeched, and they were quick to obey, running out of the door and not bothering to close it.
Her chest heaved in a breath before she rushed to close the door behind them, sliding the locks home. “Y-Yui-nee?” Oh, how her heart panged at that soft voice, she clenched her hands as she turned to him.
“Izu, sweetie. We don’t have a lot of time. We need to pack up and I doubt we have more than a half hour.” She went to his bag, taking out the notebook and pens before tossing him the empty bag. He caught it in fumbling hands, “The washer is done and we don’t have time to dry them so put your clothes in there.”
She grabbed his hand, the touch as gentle as she could manage as she guided him to the laundry room, before she rushed to her parent’s room. She grabbed the duffle bag under the bed and threw open the closet, grabbing the special body suits from their hangers. Her parents had them specially made, they were bullet, slash, and fire-proof. They were wearing two of them right now, but they were luckily paranoid enough to have extras. She stuffed them in the duffel bag along with a rolled up black canvas carrier for her mother’s knives, grabbing the lock picking set as well.
Her fingers were swift yet sure as she input the code to the safe, throwing in the stacks of yen and paperwork that was inside in the duffel bag before she grabbed her father’s laptop and the hard drives before she ran to the bathroom, smashing them against the tub’s edge until everything was in pieces. She started to fill the tub, dumping in a bottle of cleaning fluid in for good measure.
She turned to see Izuku standing in the doorway, his eyes wide. She hissed as a stab of pain went through her temples. No…don’t let them free yet…just a little longer… she pulled out her phone, squinting as she hacked into her father’s location. They were so close to the station. She couldn’t let them free yet. They would come back and even if they escaped, she knew her parents would hunt them. She couldn’t let them near Izuku again!

“Yui-nee!” She blinked, looking up at Izuku as he ran over to her. When did I fall? Another spike of pain shot through her temples and she gripped her phone as she watched them get closer. It was just a block more, she could hang out a little more, she had to!
She fought through the pain, she’d done it before, she could do it now. Her eyes locked on the little icon as it inched along the map. So close… almost… they were finally at the building! Just a little more, just to give the cops a little more time to get them restrained.
She blinked, she could almost slap herself for not thinking of it sooner. She’d hacked into the police station before and watched them through their cameras!
Her fingers shook as she accessed into their cameras, taking in deep breaths before slowing pushing it out of her lungs through her mouth. When the cameras finally loaded to police circling her parents with guns drawn and a black haired hero with a gray scarf-like wrap around his neck and shoulders slapping Quirk suppressant cuffs on their wrists did she at last let her mental grip go.
She panted like she’d just finished a marathon, her vision swimming but she saw the drops of red on the tile. A cool hand guided her head back gently as tissues soaked up the blood streaming from her nose. She blinked tears out of her eyes, looking up at the boy that should hate her guts, but here he was, trying to make her feel better. This boy has to be part angel, there’s no way a regular human is this good.
“Th-thank you.” Her voice rasped as she reached out to grab the sink, disconnecting from the cameras and shoving the phone in her hoodie pocket. She grit her teeth as she pulled herself to her feet. “We can’t stop, I need some stuff from my room. We can put your notebook and stuff in that bag.”
Izuku grabbed his duffel bag with his damp clothes and the one she’d taken from her parents. She turned off the water before she led the way to her room. As impersonal as the rest of the apartment, she didn’t have much to grab. She pulled out one more duffel bag, pulling two more of those suits from her closet, but these were her size, the fabric more flexible for her changing body. She tossed in clothes, throwing her laptop and hard drives in with them along with her chargers.
She pulled a floorboard up to grab a wallet, some more hard drives, an envelope and a framed picture of Yui and Izuku that Yuki had taken at the café, both of them covered in cats and leaning against each other. She pulled out a brown wig from the closet, quickly pulling it on to hide her hair and grabbed a contact case, slowing down enough to blink in the brown lenses.
The last thing she grabbed was a little stuffed green bunny, and then putting the notebook and pens in before zipping up the duffel bag. “Okay, let’s get to the beach and grab whatever else you need.” She took the two duffel bags, putting one over each shoulder before she led the way out of the apartment, going through the back. She’d memorized the area of escape routes, hero patrols and where police stations were. She led him through alleys and going the furthest route as possible.
The moon was high in the sky when they made it back to the beach, the light bleaching the color. “I’ll wait here and keep an eye out.” She said and waited by the bus door. He nodded before scurrying inside. Her eyes flicked around, zeroing on any shadows and her ears straining for any noise.
He came back with a large yellow bag on his shoulders and a ratty duffel bag. “I-I’m ready, Yui-nee…where are we going?”
She took in a deep breath, “I had an apartment complex in mind. It comes furnished and I have enough yen to rent it. I…I want you to move in with me,” she hated how small her voice got at the end, how uncertain and weak and alone it made her feel.
“Okay,” she blinked at the reply that came far too easily. Those emerald eyes full of warmth and trust that made something in her chest clench.
She felt her head bob in a nod before she started to lead the way, glad that Izu was keeping his questions to himself for now. She knew his head must be buzzing with them, but he waited, and she couldn’t be more grateful. How could she even begin to explain the truth?
Yui used her last microchip on the sweet old lady that owned the apartment building, making her think that their parents had set up an appointment and that they’d signed the contract and given her the money that Yui slid on the counter to cover the security deposit and two months rent. When she blinked out of the daze that her control caused, Yui pocketed the dead chip, and the landlady led them to apartment 3H, handing her two keys and pinching Izuku's cheek before she went back to her office.
Opening the door revealed a modern apartment, Yui closed and locked the door behind them. They both stumbled to the couch, the duffel bags and backpack sliding to the floor before they both collapsed on the couch. Yui turned on the TV, she just wanted a little background noise, something to zone out to before she passed out.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
