Chapter 15
Bane looked at Ragen and said: “My disciple, I have studied your battle style and found the perfect training method for you. But before we begin with this method you have to learn a bit more about magic. And we have to change your clothes. You are still wearing those old clothes. You need a new armour or a robe.” Ragen looked at his tattered clothes and felt embarrassed. He had never cared about his clothes. Bane continued: “Whenever I saw you fight, you never used magic, just on your bow or necromancy. A proper demon must know how to use magic. Not only in combat but also in other aspects of live.” Ragen listened and thought that his master was right. He just knew the spell [Magic Shield Dome] and a bit of necromancy. That was insufficient for a battle. His master looked a short moment at him and then took a magic stone out. He said: “Before I will teach you some magic and spells, I need to know what affinity you have. There six main affinities and twelve minor affinities. Every being in this world has at least one. So, put your hand on the stone and le some mana flow into it.” Ragen followed the orders of his master and looked at the stone. At first nothing happened, but then the stone turned black and became cold like ice. One could even see his own breath near the stone. After that it changed again it’s colour and became blue, humid and smelled like the sea. His master looked at him and said: “I never such an interesting combination. You have two main elements and two subelements. The main elements are darkness and water but your subelements are ice and death. Both are quite special.”
His master looked at him and the nodded. He defiantly had thought about something. He started to talk again: “My elements are Fire and Earth. That’s why Ragen I can’t directly teach you those magics, but my personal spirit and some of my summoned beasts should be able to teach you.” His master took a step back and started to chant magic. A big circle appeared on the ground. A short moment later a beautiful woman appeared inside of the circle. She had blue hair and blue eyes. She looked at his master and bowed down. “The spirit of the ocean Naida greets her master.”
Ragen was stunned to see such a beauty suddenly appear and bow down to his master. Bane looked at him amused and said:” Naida this boy here is my disciple. I want you to teach him water magic. You can use every method you want. Just teach him properly.” With that Bane turned around and left those two. Ragen still fascinated from the beauty of the girls didn’t notice how she started to cast a spell. A blue door appeared in front of him. He was a bit shocked due to the sudden appearance of the door. “Disciple of my master. Please enter the door and be prepared for your training. After we are finished you shall use water magic like you were born with it.” Ragen walked to the door and had his hand already on the doorknob when Naida spoke again: “Before you go remember this. Feel the bond between the water and your soul, just then you will be able to solve the coming trial.” She disappeared and he opened the door. Right after that he found himself again in the water. There was just water everywhere around him. He swam inside of an ocean!! If he hadn’t learnt how to swim in his previous world, then he would now be drowning. While he looked around to find any clue about his position, Naida reappeared in front of him and said: “My quest for you is easy. Go to the ground of the ocean and find the temple of my kinfolk. The temple of the water spirits. Inside of that temple is a room with lots of fruits. Pick only one and eat it, then return. That is all good luck.” With those words she disappeared and left a confused Ragen. When she left, he heard a ding sound and a window popped up.

He looked at the window and then started his search for this temple. After a few hours he gave up. The temple must be under water and he couldn’t hold his breath for such a long time. It was too deep and dark to find anything. While he was floating on the surface, he thought about the words which were told to him by Naida. The bond between his soul and the water. He tried to feel the water, but it was useless. He started to close his eyes and trying to find another solution. While he was concentrated, he started to notice something. It was like a rhythm in the waves of the ocean. He listened to the rhythm. Slowly but steadily he could feel how he became accustomed to the water around him. The water was now not an obstacle to him, but it was like a nice cushion. The rhythm for the water and the feeling became stronger. Finally, he understood. The water once gave birth to his kind and now he was back home. He smiled, it felt like he was in the lap of his mother. With a relaxed face he started to dive into the sea.
When he was underwater, he could see clearer. There was even a faint shape of a building deep on the ground. He tried to dive deeper, but he noticed that he hadn’t much breath left. Right when he wanted to turn around and go back to the surface a shadow figure appeared. The shadow rammed its giant figure into his body. Ragen was turned upside down and lost orientation. While he was confused the shadow, figure appeared again. He now clearly saw, that the shadow was a shark which had attacked him. He needed a way to fight this thing, but before that he needed air.
He finally was able to see where the surface was. He swam into that direction and saw the shark behind him. He used [Magic Shield Dome] and the shark was repelled. As Ragen tried to swim again to the surface, he noticed how the edges of his eyes became blurred. His mouth opened out of instinct to breathe and he didn’t drown. His eyes became round when he started to notice that he could breath under water. He now understood the meaning of Naida completely. He was now in his element. The shark which was still confused of the shield which suddenly appeared, started again to swim into his direction. Ragen knew he had to find a way to deal with this fish.
He couldn’t use any skills down here and he didn’t know if water magic would deal any damage to him. Then he got an idea. If he couldn’t fight if with water, then why not to drive it away. He turned his head to shark and started to think about a strong stream or waves. The shark came closer and closer but around 5 meters in front of Ragen it stopped. Then slowly the shark got further away from him. The shark clearly tried to swim to him, but it was useless. The shark was driven away by an invisible hand.

When he didn’t see the shark anymore, he started to head to the shape in the distance. When he came closer, he could finally see the so called ‘temple of the water spirits. It was tower which was spiral and was made from corals. It had faint blue colour and the entrance was on the highest floor.
A big white gate stood in front of Ragen. He stood in front of the gate and tried opening it, but the gate didn’t open. He then placed his hands on the gate and let some mana with some water magic mixed in flow into the gate. Finally, it opened.
Behind the gate were some round stairs which went downwards. After the stairs came a long corridor and then again, a gate. This time it was blue. He opened the gate and saw a grand hall filled with all type’s fruits. One had a blue colour and a cubic shape, others were round and red. There even some silver and gold ones. He remembered that Naida said that he could pick any of the fruits, but he could just pick one. He looked around and saw lots of interesting fruits. He walked through the hall, when he noticed on purple fruit in the corner of the hall. It looked like a human skull and had purple colour with some black points on it. He felt like that this one was the right fruit and picked it.
Congratulations you have successfully completed the quest from Naida.

He went out of the temple and back to the surface. Then on the surface he closed his eyes and ate the fruit. It had an interesting taste which he couldn’t describe. After he had eaten the whole fruit, his eye lids suddenly became heavy and he fell unconscious. He didn’t know how much time passed but a voice told him to wake up. In front of him was a young girl floating the sea. “Master, please wake uuup!” Who the hell was that? That was his first thought when he saw the girl. “Who are you and why are you here?” The girl crossed her arms and said: “Didn’t you remember, you ate one of the spirit fruits for a contract with a spirit. I am now your spirit und you are my master.” He did what? Another voice was heard. “Good disciple of my master, you have successfully completed my quest. We will now move on to the next stage.” Ragen looked at Naida and replied: “No, wait please. Explain me the situation here first.” Naida looked at him and said: “For a deep and save bond you have to obtain a spirit. That happened here. Be aware that for your subelements you don’t need one. Now let’s go.” He was still a bit confused but now he understood why he had a spirit. Before Naida could speak any further of their mission, the spirit girl came to Ragen and asked: “Master could you please give me a name?” He was surprised: “You don’t have one?” The girl shook her head. He though a moment and then replied to her: “Good from now on you will be called Celia my personal water spirit.” The girl smiled happily and bowed down to him. Naida who waited now said: “Good you two, now come. We go to the next stage. She opened another portal. This time it was a white door. Behind it was a cold world. Naida went in first, Ragen and Celia followed.

March 16, 2021 - Hiatus note: I will come back to this story! I'm really struggling with it, though. It's been a number of years and I kind of forgot what the original outline was. I still remember the main path, but not any of the details, because I stupidly didn't write an outline. Progress is being made. I'd like a very decent sized buffer before I start posting again. Don't want to get hopes up only to immediately disappoint! ----- Amy Barnes, an aspiring chemical researcher, finds herself dying from cancer. One of her most desperate prayers is answered in a way that she'd never dreamed possible, and she finds herself living a new life as a dungeon. Warning: Violence, morbidity Cover: Taken from here, courtesy of www.pexels.com by photographer @tookapic. Author's Note: I've read some dungeon core stories on here, and they've tickled my fancy. I've thought up a whole story, start to finish, and thought it'd be a blast to put it into words. Other than the violent and morbid aspects, this story is suitable for children. Aside from the vocabulary, that is. I will avoid the temptation to have any cursing, sexuality, or gore. Excessive gore, I suppose - it is a dungeon story, after all. I’ll do a little research from time to time, but this story will not have a great deal of rigor. I’ve made Amy’s knowledge comparable to my own for that reason. There’s a few things she knows more about than I do, and a few things that she knows less about. Unlike me, she doesn’t have access to Google - it’s a non issue for her to be more knowledgeable than me, on occasion :P This story does not use the same magic system that I’ve used in either Sorcery in Boston or A Summoner’s Confession. This one is mostly intention based, and designed to be easier access for people who are more used to the idea of, “It’s magic, therefore it works” kind of thinking. Do note that Amy is, in most senses of the term, overpowered. This goes along with the usual dungeon core stories. She’s not more powerful than other dungeons per se, but she does have knowledge and intelligence that puts them to shame. I thought about doing this in a LitRPG style, but systems take balance, and I wanted this to be pure fun to write. This story was inspired from a few sources. Despite the title, it wasn’t really inspired by Of Mice and Men, though some of the themes match. Rather, I’ve taken inspiration from a few dungeon core novels on Royal Road Legends for the main idea. Many conventions of dungeon core stories have been perverted from the genre, however. I’ve taken my usual science-loving self to town to play around with the powers, and I can only hope you have half as much fun reading this as I have had writing it.
