《Ninth World Lia's Struggle》ch 2

As I finished reading the letter, I could feel my eyebrow twitching as a smile crept on my face. I tried my best to assimilate the information that had been presented to me, but I simply couldn't, 'never in my life have I panicked and today was not going to be the exception' I thought to myself as I tried to formulate what to do now. To tell the truth, I felt as if some weird TV program was playing a prank on me, but that could not be the case as I am sure there is no way for them to pull something of this magnitude. Either way, I decided to stop thinking about it, wrecking my brain trying to come up with an explanation was useless either way since knowing what had happened would not change my current situation, albeit it might help a little. Either way, I steeled my resolve and started wandering around, of course, I took the things laid before my eyes, I am not stupid enough to leave it behind.
For now, if I were to believe that letter word for word there shouldn't be a way for me to return to my world, moreover I had died there so going back would be a pretty weird event for my relatives and friends. It's not like they wouldn't be happy, but the ruckus of someone coming back from the dead was something I would much rather not have to deal with. Either way, my priority as of now is to find people in this world, after all the letter said this world is a battleground so there should be other people here for those battles to take place. As I thought about it a realization came to me. If I meet someone will they be hostile towards me? I felt cold sweat forming on my back as I thought about it, there is a simple reason for that, I am somewhat of a pacifist as I am not a fan of pain. Shaking my head I continued walking, if it came to that I would just run away, that was the best option for me. The question now is, will I be able to? I think I have said this enough time already but for those of you with bad memory I shall repeat it once more, I am lazy, and since I am lazy I don't exercise. I let out a big sigh, no use thinking about it, when the time comes I will simply do what I can. And as always I simply decided to push the problems towards the future me, procrastination is such a wonderful thing.

I don't know for how long I walked since I don't have my phone or anything to check the hour, but I can make an educated guess and I would say it has been around two hours. Fortunately, that was the time it took me to reach the end of the forest and reach a plain. Small hills and from time to time a tree could be seen, that was what decorated this plain, the grass wasn't too tall as it reaches just above my shoes. That reminds me I am no longer wearing my school uniform, I guess Gaia gave me appropriate clothes when she resurrected me. They consisted of a simple pair of boots, short shorts not too short, now try saying that fast three times, next is a simple shirt that left my belly exposed, a pair of fingerless gloves and a simple leather jacket. Thank god I am not fat or I would look horrible with this clothes, now you might be thinking how are you not fat even though you don't exercise, my answer to that is I don't know, but if I had to guess I would say genetics.
Finally, I decided to take a small break, I had been walking for two hours non-stop and I felt tired so I sat down against a tree. As I took a breather I decided to check the things Gaia had left behind for me, after all, there might be something useful and so the investigation of the bag began. There was, of course, the sword, I unsheathed it and began my inspection, the blade was around half a meter long, five centimetres wide and one to half a centimetres thick, it was a nice short sword all things considered. Next would be the contents of the bag, a smaller leather bag container filled with water, some extremely hard bread, a small pouch with a few coins, and a piece of cloth that looked like a map. I was feeling a little hungry so I took a bite of the bread, it was bad, to say the least, the flavour was non-existent and it was so hard I worried that I would break my teeth. But it was all I had so there was no use complaining, I discovered that if I filled my mouth with water after taking a bite it would soften a little making it easier to eat.
After around ten to twenty minutes I decided to start walking again, taking the map in hand I studied it a little, it was vague, extremely vague, but it was all I had and through its use, I could somewhat deduce were I was. In the map, I saw what looked like the forest I was just in and the plain I had just arrived at, a little farther to the west there should be a town according to the map, about at the centre of the plain. With renewed vigour, I took to the road again, even tho there was no road but you get what I am trying to say, either way, according to my calculation it should take me another two hours or so to reach it. As I kept on walking a saw a few weird things, rabbits with horns on their heads and what looked like a blob of water moving by itself, and with that, I was sure this was no longer my world.

As I walked I came to the realization those rabbits and blobs was evading me as if I was cursed or something, could it be that I actually am? no there is no way I must be overthinking it. I kept walking and after a while, I heard voices, looking around I found a group of two, a guy with what looked like heavy medieval armour and a girl with a get up somewhat similar to mine. I felt elated to the point I almost ran at full speed towards them but a simple thought stopped me in my tracks, would they be hostile towards me? I shook my head, there was no use thinking about that now if they were then there was nothing I could do about it, and so I began walking towards them. As I approached them they turned around to look at me, it was now or never and with a quaky voice, I said hello, almost as if it was natural they greeted me back and as they did I felt like collapsing from my nervousness leaving my body.
They were very friendly and so I decided to ask them about a bunch of stuff, not holding anything back I told them about how I had died how I got here and even-handed Gaia's letter to them. With eyes so wide I was worried they would pop out of their sockets they listened to me and read the letter, they introduce themselves, the guy's name was Daniel O'Brien as for the girl hers was Elizabeth Cunningham. As we talked the both of them insisted for me to call them by their nicknames which were Dan and Lizz respectively. I also introduced myself, Amelia Bellevie that is my full name, but no one addresses me by it since I prefer to be called by my nickname as well which is Lia. I asked them about the common knowledge of this world, or at least I tried as they were in turn more interested in hearing about my world so we simple shot questions back and forth as we walked.
What I understood from our talk is that this world is truly one of swords and magic, Dan is what in video-games would be known as a tank, he is tough and strong, I could tell that much just from looking at his heavy gear. Lizz, on the contrary, is a rogue, her movements are meant to be nimble and fast, when you think about it the two make a good pair. There are many fighting styles and even more types of magic, from what they told me the base ones would be: warrior, wizard, archer, and rough. From there you can mix and evolve this to make a pretty much an infinite amount of fighting styles. There are also unique skills which each individual poses and just like the name implies they are unique to them as no one else can fully replicate them.
They also explained to me the whole battlefield aspect of this world. It seems that it's a war between species that were created by the gods, humans, demons, giants, dwarfs, elves, beast-men, dragon-newts, and hobgoblins, these are the main species, of course, there are other living beings in this world and even sub-species of the main ones but that is irrelevant to the gods. It also comes without saying that the main species also tend to fight between them so I can say I am pretty lucky to meet such good-hearted people right off the bat.
And as we kept talking, they guided me towards the town I was head to and where they came from. Now it had become my turn to tell them about my world, I told them about the wonders of science, and how we were currently in a state of relative peace. How most people reached old age thanks to medicine and how knowledge was widespread through the use of the internet. Overall it was quite a nice chat as I kept talking about the wonders of the modern world with pride. And finally, I could see the town on the horizon, I couldn't wait to see what was in store for me in this new world.

Humanity's End
Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.
