《The Monster We Are》Chapter 4

Life.
Life, I’ve found as a baby is hard.
Well if you have an adults mind it is.
Being born kind of hurt, the pressure from being pushed out was painful it was like having a bear hug…that pulsated down your body. It was an odd sensation being aware during childbirth.
After being born I was laid down in something soft and scratchy. I could hear some grunting noises and what sounded like voices and crying.
I think one of my siblings just got delivered, the crying is getting closer and is laid down beside me. The crying sounds like a cross between a baby and a cat mewling. And now there’s more crying this sounds slightly different a slightly deeper pitch, a boy maybe.
The voices sound like they’re discussing something, it’s a language or tongue i’ve never heard before, I try to listen in to it and by god there’s even more crying. How many siblings do I have. This happens a few more times before I start to get sleepy.
*yawn* Not this again bloody baby body. I look down at myself and I’m…….AHHHH “ahhggg” grey, what was that sound, fuck I think that was my baby speak. I look at my hands there a very dark shade of grey.
*……….*
My instincts from my previous life make me feel like I’m being watched.
I try to look around and I notice that a sibling is green. Right I’m an goblin which explains why by siblings are going to be green but why am I grey.*yaaaawwn*
I awake to being really itchy. It’s the straw. This is uncomfortable, I try to roll.
Yes I did it. I can move that’s good, but I feel bigger than yesterday, but it doesn’t feel unnatural.
*grumble*
Huh.. My stomach growled.
“AHHHHHHG” My world is shaken. I’m being picked up and get placed back on the straw.
Fuck.
I start to move my limbs and body, slowly in a bid to get used to it. I start to get tired, my eyelids getting heavier.
*... … ….*
I’m being watched again.
I get picked up and something gets shoved in my mouth. It feels like a teat. I start sucking before realized I had.

MILK.. I think its milk. After a few minutes I get taking off the teat, opening my weary eyes. I look up at the person holding me, there holding me in both arms, wow I’m big…… wait if I’m being held with then where’s the bottle.
I look down and there is a green tit looking at me. “AHHHHHG Fuuugggck.” The goblin starts chatting to me I think as I spoke out loud again in baby. Sounded closer to what I thought I shouted by accident. It.. she places me down and picks up another goblin baby and the starts feeding that one. She’s talking to that goblin as well now. *Yawn* not again.
This pattern continues for a few more days I think. Its kinda hard to tell time as everything is lit by torches and not the battery powered ones, and my internal clock has yet to develop.
I’m starting to understand the language a little. I have four other siblings they don’t seem to be as active as me yet. I also seem to be slightly bigger than the others and I’m still the only grey goblin I’ve seen. All the others seem to be varying shades of green. *yawn*
Goblin Language Learnt (basic)
WHAT *YAWN*
I’m awake again.
I seem bigger again, it looks like I have a increased growth rate, as do the others beside me.

It must be a racial thing.
My senses have gotten better. I can see much of the room now, this is quite weird. I look down my body.
“THANK FUCK.” I exclaim.
The other children look at me in wonder. Oppps shouldn’t have said that out loud. I look at the others by the looks of it I have two brothers and two sisters.
*growl*
I’m hungry again.
“UP!”
I stare around bewildered.
There is one of the females, I hope they’re females that have been feeding us. “*sigh* I forgot young ones don’t talk yet.”

Looking at her she is wearing a loin cloth and has a bandoleer between her breasts, with various things and a small knife by her hip.
I stand up.
She looks over again and I’m already standing, my workouts to get used to being in a new body has paid off letting me accomplish getting up quickly .
“Weird.” She mutters, I just about hear her.
She starts to pick and stand up a the other little ones and motions us to follow her, apart from one of the girls who stood up with some effort on her wobbly legs.
Were taken to a room a few doors down, I peeked into the other rooms a we passed. They were filled with bundles of what looked like bedding with an odd odor coming from them.
Within the room we were taken one wall is peppered with holes.
The she goblin reaches into one of the crevasses and pulls out a grub about 2” long and about an 1” thick and proceeds to take a bite out it and gestures to us the wall and then her mouth and then repeats this motion a few times.
Knowing what she getting at and my siblings not I walk over to the wall and then reach into a hole and feel around and find a grub.
I take it out, it’s a tiny bit bigger than the one the she-goblin has, and think I take a bit out of it.
*chew chew*
It’s not actual that bad, there’s not really a taste behind it kind of just tastes like protein. I’ve eaten a lot worse in my life, my last life.
The others still looking a bit bewildered.
“UMMMMMMMMM”. I go. Then take another bite.
The sister that stood up, proceeds to wobbly over to me and reaches into a hole and feels around.
She then giggles, and pulls out a grub smaller than our guardians one.
She sniffs it, and nearly drops it when it wiggles in her grasp. Giggling again she takes a bite out of it.
The others then come over and then all reach into different holes, and they all do the same as my other sister.
“Wow that weird…”
*……….*
I can tell that the she-goblin is staring at me again.
“Little weird fellow… and weird colour….better tell %”$%^.” She starts to mutter to herself again I didn’t understand that last word.
Must be because I learnt basic level goblin.
I’m going to have to listen more to understand the language better.
I’m starting to get a bit of a chill around the nether regions. I walk up to the she-goblin. Point at her loincloth and then to myself, and gesture again.
“HUH…. You want cloth…….HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA.” the she-goblin cackles. She pushes me towards the others and starts to mutter under hear breath I have no trouble hear her this close. “Take grey skin to E$%er, take litter back first, yes, yes.”
She starts herding us out of the room.
“ First grey one stand when told, then eat food first without force feed , make other eat as well, weird…weird then..then ask for loincloth. Not natural *shudder* yes yes El%er know, Elder know what do.” She continues to murmur.
Just listen to her more helped me pick up that word, so goblins have an elder as an alpha.
We’re back at the room we were born in. The she-gob then nudges me to the side before pushing the others back into the room.
Turning to me she utters “ Follow.” Then starts walking away.
I follow, the she looks over her shoulder *shiver* “not right” she groans.
Goblin language advanced (standard)
Good that’s a bit better. We continue down more corridors but I can't see much as it's too dark there doesn’t seem to be many torches in here.
The more we walk the better the area seems to get I start to notice and there seems to be stone work in some of the corridors now.
I’m starting to physically get tired after a small trek.
The area we are in now is complete stonework we are outside a wooden door.
Awareness Stat unlock.
Wait I can unlock stats. I should check that out later.
The she-gob opens the door.

Dungeon Core Chat Room.
This is a slower-paced "experiment and dungeon building" web novel that tries to use the idea of peer-to-peer communication with Dungeon Cores instead of Dungeon to slave monster communication to break up the detailed dungeon building. Rank 1 description: (minimum met for system initialization...detailed description as follows) Each race was given a system by the gods to make up for their shortcomings and balance their place in this world. Humans: Abysmally bad at understanding and using magic unable to use more than the lowest of magic were given the "Skill System" magic in the form of premade skills with use, study, and mastery tied to experience. Elves: Intuitively understand magic and have long lives leading to vast knowledge and skill in their chosen fields. However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were gifted the "World Tree System" with experience gained through the care of natural areas – gifting the chance of children to increase their numbers without dirty copulation. All “natural” or “wild” monsters are given an "Evolution system" designed around killing and consuming as many creatures as possible, slowly increasing strength and, at thresholds, allowing mutations to alter them multiple times. Dungeon cores are different. Unlike humans, they can see, manipulate and live off mana. Unlike Elves, they naturally crystallize after extended periods of time in high mana level areas. However, they cannot easily move or communicate and typically go insane without companionship. As a species other than the odd eccentric they are unimaginative. Brute forcing solutions without the drive to truly innovate. Thus they have been gifted with the "Dungeon Connection System" a magical version of the internet accessible by their peers that allows them to barter and sell: bait, traps, monsters, and knowledge, as well as entertain each other with “adventure streams” using exciting recorded battles and humorous reels of arrogant chumps biting off more than they can chew to often fatal effects. This is the casual story of a dungeon unluckily spawned far from potential adventurers forced to innovate beyond its peers to find its place in this world. Rank 2 Description: Justification. I've been on a dungeon core kick for months and while I love the genre – it's sparse with entries. Often the forced conflict gets repetitive and frantic solving of threats "power levels" the protagonist to god levels to progress the plot – taking away the nice steady progression fantasy I'm looking for. (Progression in this story is linked to how strong of monsters/traps/whatever he can create not his "level"...this is demonstrated by some of his newer monsters beating his older monsters not with discrete "this monster has 10 attack this one has 40") Additionally, the focus on 3rd parties with their drama takes away from the reason I’m reading dungeon core novels in the first place – I'm looking for magical crafting, experimentation and kingdom building – not defence from higher and higher levelled enemies looking to steal/destroy/control the MC. This novel is kind of just me writing the story I wish I could read. I like thinking about the experimentation that can be done in fantasy settings using 'mana' as an excuse to make up rules and try to keep them internally consistent. IE once I define how a rule works, I'm going to commit to keeping it – no breaking hard truths I've given when it's convenient, even if it backs me into a corner. Hopefully, that should make the story interesting to read even if it's SOL and less action-oriented. There will be problems to solve and a clear progression in strength (of created monsters and knowledge) however due to not wanting to force conflict for the sake of conflict the general theme will be closer to slice of life with few action sequences and no overarching goal so please keep that in mind when picking this up as the genre is not for everyone. Finally, I have a clear goal of what I want from this story (not an endless romp but a series of arcs and then a conclusion that's a couple of dozen medium-sized chapters long) I want to commit to finishing it or at least bringing it to a point of rest. I hate all the engaging stories that stop with a “hiatus” indefinitely so in the event I lose motivation I'll work to end this even if the ending becomes rushed/unsatisfying just to give a sense of closure. I’m planning on including several polls in terms of direction and taking feedback heavily into account if I get enough readers (but may choose to ignore it if it deviates too far from the direction I want to take this as in feedback like: “The MC needs a cartoonishly evil arch-enemy that wants to enslave him and force the mc to pump out magic items” or “the MC needs to make a body and learn teleportation then live with humans” will get shot down without consideration.)
