《Spirit Of The Forest (Dropped)》Chapter 2: Monster Horde (Severely Edited)

Evan dashed through the forest listening for any signs of the monster horde. With the Warmth Of Nature Cloak that would make him blend in with his surroundings as long as he was surrounded by nature. Continuing through the forest Evan kept going on his search for the monster horde.
What are monster hordes? See, the human textbook definition would be a large horde of monsters formed by dungeons, but that isn't actually the real reason why monster hordes are formed. Rather, a monster horde is caused by a strong foreign monster that isn't bound to a dungeon. They scare off any monster that is weaker than themselves. This happens maybe once or twice a month depending on how many manage to sneak in, but recently their numbers have been on the rise.
Unbound monsters, as they are called, are usually formed from places that don't have a mana core but have a decent amount of mana concentrated at one point. Now because of an event that is occurring within the earth, mana is spreading and dungeons are no longer the only ones which form monsters frequently.
Even Evan with his intellect could not fathom how this mana spread actually occurred, or even the catalyst that started it. Although, he suspected that the Human-Demon War may have played a part: The area where the mana started spreading was the battleground for the turning point of the war where the humans won through a counterattack against the demons. The main suspicion was the fact that the humans were losing the battle at the start, but three days later mysteriously made a comeback.
The Dungeons however, are far more interested in researching why unbound monsters are attracted to their lands, more so than what caused the spread. They all arrived at the same conclusion. Unbound monsters look for higher concentrations of mana to further their own evolution and since dungeons have the densest amount of mana, unbound monsters flock to them.
This was even worse for the Mother’s Tree dungeon because there wasn’t just one or two open places for monsters to enter, such as cave dungeons. Rather, the Mother Tree dungeon had tons of openings along the sides of its domain.

Now, you may be wondering how Evan would actually find the monster horde with only a general idea of its direction. Even with his speed, the forest that was the size of a sixteenth of a kingdom which was about 8,500 square miles, and it would take a while to comb through. Actually it was quite simple, Evan just followed the screams of pain, the pleas for mercy, and the occasional bright, red emergency flare being shot into the sky.
Dammit that flare was near the beginner zone!
Evan accelerated hoping to gods that he could make it before any more damage was done. After another 5 minutes of running through the dense foliage he reached the point of carnage. Or rather would be carnage if Evan could actually see anything, apart from a giant carpet of panicking horned rabbits.
Those emergency flares are quite something. I am always amazed that it stays visible long enough for me to follow it all the way here.
"Run! Monster Horde!!!", a male adventurer yelled as he continued running down the path away from the fluffy horde. He was removing any gear that could weigh him down with a terrified face, as if looking scared might save him from the oncoming onslaught.
"Mommy!", screamed another adventurer, this one was rather buff, had the look of someone who could kill someone without hesitation. That was until he started pissing his pants while running for his life.
"Group up and try to keep them off our backs!", ordered a female adventurer who had an aura that exhibited the qualities of a leader.
“Why should we listen to a woman like you?!”, mocked one of the men even in a situation of where death was just around the corner.
Evan’s face was twitching as if not trying to laugh.
Even in this kind of predicament, humans still can’t cooperate with each other. I’ll never understand this race.
Evan shook his head while still grinning and started heading towards the back of the horde. Whatever broke in must have been in the back routing all of the terrified critters. Once the monster was in sight Evan could easily dispatch it.

And there it was, a large wolf with blood red fur and black stripes all over it.
Oh! It has three heads! That’s new, but...
Evan sighed with disappointment in his voice.
"And here I thought it was something dangerous. Just an overgrown mutt."
See, the wolf cerberus thing was a danger to any newbie or even semi-experienced adventurer. But Evan could take a stomp from a dragon and only come out with a broken arm, so a wolf even as large as four humans stacked of one another would pale in comparison.
Evan reached under his cloak and unslung a sleek black colored bow that was engraved with runes from top to bottom off his back in one fluid motion while pulling back the string. An arrow with even more tiny runes etched on its shaft magically materialized notched and ready to fire.
"Fase Lamr Icfa", Evan chanted as green mana started to form in thin air and then converge on the bow. A bright green light lit up Evan’s face and gave him a holy look like a god with green light shrouding his small figure. Evan felt the green mana aura being sucked into the arrow and as the shroud vanished he sensed that the arrow was filled to the brim with mana.
"Return to the earth from where you once came", Evan said as if he had said the words many times before.
He let loose the arrow, it flew in a small arc and landed perfectly between the eyes of the feasting wolf. The energy from the arrow vanished then the arrow fell to the ground, hitting the earth with a thud before dissolving into nothingness.
Half a second passed. Nothing happened as the wolf continued his feast. It had barely felt the arrow.
A second passed. The wolf froze. Then began to struggle for the brief moment it could.
Then two seconds passed. The wolf's form was quickly sucked in by a green energy that was flowing from every part of its body.
Finally after the third second had passed. There was nothing left of the beast except for a single green pearl like object.
Evan lowered his bow as he walked over to where the beast once stood and picked up the pearl before sliding it into a pouch on his belt. Then he flicked his wrist and the bow slowly vanished from his grip.
And now all I need to do is to reroute the bunnies.
Since the threat was gone the rabbits would naturally calm down as well. Evan looked behind him at the area where the bunnies had their stampede. The bunnies had stopped their movements.
Evan then started speaking in a tongue different from the language of magic. It was a language that no sentient conquerer of the continent would be able to understand. It was the voice of the earth.
"Visal loma tamau lou isecas”
The rabbits all perked up their ears as if they were listening to the words attentively. They gradually lowered them as they started hopping off at quick speeds into the surrounding trees.. In just over a minute all that remained of the horde's presence were the impaled bodies of a couple humans, well-trodden ground, and a few tufts of bunny fur.
And where were the other humans who were running from the horde a couple minutes ago? Long gone, humans run fast when they have to.
Well I'm done here. Time to head back and report to mother.
Evan turned around and walked off back into the trees, leaving no trace that he had been there in the first place.

A D&D Gamer in Garweeze Wurld
He doesn't know how he got here, and while the trappings are familiar, he doesn't actually know where he is, either. From the perspective of those around him, Duromar is a half-ogre barbarian, an uncivilized brute by any standard you care to use. But from his perspective, he's a character created in a gaming system. From either one, he must live within the rules of that system. This is the story of a gamer who ends up in a game that's just a bit off from what he knows. ---- I wanted to write something a little bit old-school. Most of the LitRPG I've found seems to be based on computer RPG styled stories. Progression through levels is fast, and depending on the game, skills and even attributes can be trained with or without class levels. This wasn't true with the older pen and paper games, and that's the style of leveling I wanted to write.
