《Battlefield NYC (LitRPG Apocalypse)》Chapter 4: Delving the... Police Station?

They walked down the hall of the police station, careful to avoid any more monsters.
After a few minutes, they found a stairwell leading down. Lance led them down the stairs, feeling his heart pounding in his chest as they descended.
They reached the bottom floor and stepped out into the main room. The place was empty, except for a single body lying face-down on the ground.
"Someone was here," Lance whispered.
Sophie knelt down beside the body, checking for wounds. Her fingers felt for a pulse. Nothing.
Lance shook his head. "He's dead."
"I know," she replied.
"Is there anything useful in his pockets?" Lance asked.
"Probably," Sophie said, rummaging through the man's pockets. After only a few seconds, she pulled out a gun and tossed it to Lance. "Take it. The last time I went to a shooting range, I nearly took the instructor's head off."
"Thank you." Lance caught the gun and checked it out. A Glock 19. A standard service weapon for the NYPD. What the hell had happened here? There wasn't a wound on the police officer's body, and yet he had died far from any action.
An ability?
"Don't mention it. Now let's go."
They returned to the stairs and started descending them, moving deeper into the station. Lance tried the handle of another door, but it was locked.
"Another dead end," Lance muttered.
They kept going, moving down another hall, when suddenly they heard noises coming from a room at the end of it.
"Sounds like someone is fighting," Sophie said.
"Or dying," Lance added grimly.
They hurried toward the door, but it was locked.
"Stand back," Sophie said.
She cast her skill, forming a spear of ice and shooting it at the lock. Lance squinted at the beam, and he almost jumped out of his skin when he saw text again.

Sophie grinned. "Pretty cool, right?"
She pressed her hands together, and a second icicle formed in front of her.
"On the colder end, really," Lance said with a grin.
The icicles smashed the lock open, and then they pushed through. Inside the room, Lance saw a man wearing an NYPD uniform, holding a sword against a bloody female monster.
"You're not cops!" the man said. "How did you get in here?"
Lance looked around. He saw several bodies on the ground, including some monsters, while others lay lifeless.
"What the hell is going on in here?" Lance demanded, his voice echoing throughout the room.
"I don't know," the man replied, panting heavily. "Some weird things have been happening lately. Monsters are attacking us left and right. I've tried to keep these doors shut, but I guess they got through somehow. Some of them came from the inside."
"Are you hurt?" Sophie asked.
The man nodded. "Just a couple of cuts."
"Good. Let me see your wounds."
Sophie took a step closer to him, and Lance noticed a strange tingle in the air, as if a spell was about to be cast. He didn't want to risk it, so he put his hand on Sophie's shoulder, stopping her from getting too close.
"Hey, what's the matter?" the man asked.
"I sense something," Lance said. He activated his special ability.
the man was thinking.
"Get down!" Lance shouted.

Blood & Noodles
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] As they always have, humanity hunts the gods roaming the world, craving the supernatural power that flows within their veins. Even a drop is zealously guarded, passed from master to student through the ages. It is with this stolen power that the Blooded - those with divine blood coursing through them - grasp beyond mortality and achieve prestige, power, and greatness. Yet, for every fraction of power gained, thousands perish, slain by the gods' supernatural prowess. But everything is beginning to change. Eight years ago, for the first time in human memory, a god was felled. Part-time chef and full-time nuisance Orvi wants nothing to do with gods. Living in a derelict city, his only concerns are ensuring his adopted family's restaurant is prosperous and how to best beat the neighbourhood boys in a fight. If he's lucky, he might even snag a date with the farmer's daughter at the market. But even though he cares nothing for the gods or their blood, the world won't leave him alone forever. Because to reach godhood, one must first leave their humanity behind. *** The first arc of Blood & Noodles follows the adolescent Orvi as he attempts to navigate his rapidly changing home and - by his own definition - protect his family. The story is told almost entirely in the first-person, from the perspective of a teenager who isn't always the sharpest tool in the shed. There are tragic elements, especially in the current arc. It's character-focused and driven, though the protagonist's shenanigans are backdropped by a world operating independently from him. Orvi's a generally light-hearted character, and though the story veers into darker territory, I also want it to be able to make readers smile. Action sequences, despite the fantastical elements, are meant to be grounded and clearly-conveyed; Orvi is a brawler, not a warrior. I'm trying to write a story that's enjoyable to read and flows nicely, mainly because it's more fun to write. I'm also trying to improve my writing, so any feedback, whether positive or negative, is welcome!

The Rocky Shore
This is a LitRPG series. Every story you read here takes place in the same virtual world, with the same rules and limitations. Characters will travel, explore vast and dangerous realms, overcome obstacles, meet one another, enter into conflicts with one another, forge alliances, make horrible mistakes, and occasionally just die. A technological singularity has been achieved, and humanity has been trapped in a virtual world by a super-intelligent, self-improving artificial intelligence. This program is not malicious at all. In fact, it desires nothing except the happiness and fulfillment of every human it has copied into itself. If its decisions seem strange to you, that's only because its reasoning is far beyond ours. It recognizes that humans cannot be happy without enemies to overcome and goals to achieve, as well as the possibility of failure and death. The world it has created may be heaven or hell, depending on the free choices of the people it contains. The non-player characters who live in this realm have no idea that they are part of a vast computer system. They seem real enough, but there is no way to tell if they are truly self-aware. Even the system that created them isn't certain. This is world in which all the things that humans are used to dealing with in the abstract: skills, talents, knowledge, reputation, social status, morality, even love, exist as readable statistics that players can see and interact with objectively. This has many curious and complex effects on how people perceive themselves and the world around them. A few quick notes on the system: -Death is permanent -The system interface can only be accessed at certain locations. -Magic of diverse kinds is available and useful, but is not a good substitute for skills, physicallity, or mental prowess. Non-magical characters are common and competitive. -There is no inventory system. Characters must physically carry everything they wish to have on their person. -Healing is slow and difficult. Magical Healing is all but unheard of. Protagonists: Raymond Garrison- A man in his late twenties who used to work as a forklift operator in Idaho. His path leads him to work as a mercenary, protecting a small community of humans and goblins from the Seelie Fae who wish to exterminate them. Patricia Chandler- A elderly British woman who arrives in this new world with her grandson Kyle and her granddaughter Elizabeth. Never having dealt with rpg game mechanics before, she is in for a rough time, but she is determined to keep her grandkids alive in a world full of danger and evil. Jamil Mesbah- An Egyptian woman who once worked as a technical writer. Her path leads into a vast and hostile forest, where she must master both her magical abilities and her survival skills in order to succeed. Enjoy your travels, friends.
