Chapter 57: S***, I forgot that I have the worst grades right now!
Zhang Jian was about to chase after the girls, wanting to explain why he couldn't give out any information about his best friend. Maybe they will listen to my explanation. From how soft and calm their expression was, Zhang Jian knew this is the perfect opportunity for him to plead. But life is giving him a big slap to the face. Before he could even run out, the bell rang for the next class.
Hearing the bell ringing, Zhang Jian mouth gape. Oh, come on! He could only grit his teeth and wait for the class to end. But he knew it will just become more difficult. Every second that passes, he knew the damage would become more severe than it was from the start.
In my next life, can I just be born with ultra good looks! Zhang Jian looks at Lu Chen, and he couldn't help but cry at how god is being unfair. The power of good-looking people is too unreal.
While Zhang Jian was gazing at Lu Chen with envy and jealously, Xiao Lao Shi walks in and starts to hand out packets to each of the students in the front row.
"Students., you will be taking a mock exam. Treat it like the mock Gaokai." When he said this, some students expression went blank.
Looking through the packet, Lu Chen couldn't help but smirk. These questions are so simple. Being a person with the knowledge of a middle-aged man in a teenage body, questions like these are simple for Lu Chen. He wrote down all of the answers with lightning speed.
As Lu Chen writes down his answers, Xiao Lao Shi scans around the entire classroom, checking to see if anyone is cheating. His eyes quickly redirect towards Lu Chen's direction.

Is he guessing? Xiao Lao Shi's face twitches. From how Lu Chen continues to speed through the questions, Xiao Lao Shi couldn’t help but shake his head in disappointment. Because Lu Chen used a complex formula yesterday, he hopes that Lu Chen would do well even if his grades had been bad for a few years.
Was it a mistake? Xiao Lao Shi couldn’t help but feel doubts about Lu Chen being a genius.
…
“Times up.” Xiao Lao Shi shouts at the students, “Please hand your packets up.” The students begin to pass up their packets. Some of their faces had a pale expression of despair, while others were beaming with joy. To some students, the mock-test felt like the actual gaokao, and the other half thought it was just another test.
Zhang Jian is the first type as he looks relieved. He turns to Lu Chen and asks, “How did you do on it?”
“Pretty good. What about?” Lu Chen had finished the packet one hour ahead of the time allotted, so he just sat there daydreaming about what business project to do.
"I would be placed 158, at least." Zhang Jian proudly said as if there wasn't anything wrong with what he had just said.
Lu Chen, on the other hand, gave him a weird look, “You know that there are only 159 students in our grade, right?”
“Mmmhmmm, and I know that I won’t be the one that will be dead last.” Zhang Jian laughs.
Slapping his forehead, Lu Chen couldn’t believe that Zhang Jian is so proud that he would get at least second to last. However, behind all of that jokes and banter, Lu Chen couldn’t deny how smart Zhang Jian was. This man would usually get around the top 20s in the entire grade, despite his questionable behavior.

“Then who do you think is going to place last?” Lu Chen asks. It felt like Zhang Jian already knew who it was. He's also curious as he wants to find out who will place last out of 159 students.
“Of course, I already know who’s going to be the one placing last. It’s already read in the stars.”
Saying as if it was already obvious who this person was, Zhang Jian points his fingers towards Lu Chen, "We have you, the three-time last place champion right here."
Lu Chen glares at Zhang Jian and was about to retort back when he realizes,
S***, I forgot that I have the worst grades right now!

Meek
After failing as an apprentice cooper and a town guard, Eli finds his place at the Rockbridge archives. Sure, he's the oldest 'junior scribe,' but he likes the job. And he's good at it, too. Then he completes an apparently-insignificant project, and the brutal reaction shocks him--with consequences that eventually shake the world. Eli gains powers. Rare and inhuman abilities. He progresses slowly, steadily, and not without setbacks. He changes, too. Is he a hero, a villain, a human, a monster? Depends who you ask. Meek is an epic fantasy with elements of progression. The basic magic is simple: five Paths, each with a different powerset. However, complexity arises from combinations, and the protagonist wields a magic all his own. Meek is set in the Valley, the only (as far as anyone knows) human empire that survived a Final Battle against a terrible foe. The Valley is warded against infiltration, but the enemy learned how to warp human souls, to foment discord within. However, another soul is also ... changed. Perhaps even 'warped.' And that soul is starting on a long (long, long) path that might, one day, prove that the Final Battle wasn't so final after all.

After all, who could ever roam this forsaken land but the damned? Now, for the first time in eons, I am finally granted a sliver of hope. To escape this hell, I am willing to serve anyone. Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
