The armada arrived. Today our platoon is called to defend earth against the threat from far beyond the borders of our beloved milky way.
In my opinion it is hopeless. Humanity, once reaching for the stars and colonising hundreds of star systems, has been pushed back down into the abyss.
After a century long war against the seemingly endless fleet of black ships only the cradle of humanity, earth, is still intact. And now they found it. Humanity is on the brink of disappearing forever.
About a hundred years ago a small fleet of DSR(Deep Space Recon)-class ships found traces of an unknown civilisation, the first ever proof of space-faring intelligent beings aside from us.
Boy did humanity have high hopes. To find them would mean learning more about everything. Technology, medicine, the history of the universe.
And then, a year later, we found them. Deep outside in the void between the galaxies, a ship was discovered. A ship not of human origin, not even of milky way origin. It resembled a large black obelisk laying on its side, but huge. About a thousand meters long and two-hundred-something meters wide. Hexagon-shaped, a rather round tip at one end, a flat plane at the other end.
The only problem was now that we found them, they found us as well.
Mankind’s hope for a brighter future was crushed like the DSRs we sent to investigate.
Maimed away in seconds by weapon-tech decades more advanced than our own. The enemy immediately sprung into action, they traced our fleets origin back to the base they originated from, a little twin star system in one of the lesser arms of the galaxy.
They ravaged the entire star system with a single ship in a matter of days. Three billion people died in the aftermath. Humanity took a heavy blow, more than a dozen HAD(Heavily Armed Destroyer)-units, the pinnacle of known technology, swiped away like leaves.

Yet, it was only the beginning. In the next weeks, more black ships appeared everywhere. Before we could react, half of the total human population was killed, about two hundred billion people, gone, just like that.
The armada, as the enemy was now called, met little to no resistance anywhere as the gap between our technological standings was just too great.
But there is, after all, one thing you can always count on. Humans will quarrel between themselves about race, philosophy, politics, religion endlessly, until faced by a common threat. From then to now, almost instantly, mankind stands united. Arguments about gender are replaced by discussing solutions. The will to survive, no matter what, becomes active. Adaptability and ingenuity, the core qualities of our souls, kick in.
While under relentless attack, all activity focuses on a single objective: Defeat the enemy. Defend mankind. Refuse to go down.
In a comparatively brief window of time, technology took a huge leap, enough to fight the foe to a momentary standstill.
Sure, seventy percent of us were dead by then, but that just fuelled the burning desire to overcome all dire straits in those still alive.
And yet, even with all of humankind acting as one, it was not enough to overcome the black fleet. They had been stopped but pushing them out of our home galaxy proved impossible.
So we went into hiding, fighting a guerilla war in our own galactic backyard.
Success showed itself slow, but steady. The armada was pushed back, a hundred ships, half of them, destroyed in a few decades.
The day of liberation arrived. The foe retreated and we thought we won.
The only thing none could manage was identify who the enemy was. No one was ever captured to this day, alive or dead. No origin of their fleet was found. The only thing we knew was their ships were black and their technology terrifyingly efficient.

For about a year, peace was reinstated. The first opportunity for the human race to take a breath in ninety years. That was eight years ago.
On April 2nd 3474 GST, a message from the GBP(Galactic Border Patrol) popped up at GSC(Galactic Strategic Command). It read: „They are back. Oh god, they are back.“
The sirens, silent for over a year, started ringing again on every planet, every space station, every outpost and ship. Everyone held their breath. With the memory of the war still fresh, it was easy to get back into fighting mode. Only this time, humanity had to learn a harsh lesson. We had not defeated the enemy. Not even close. We had beaten a measly hundred ships, now they stood on our doorstep again. With a fleet numbering thousands. Congratulations, we made them angry.
Which brings us to now, in the past few years, every planet inhabited by us was destroyed, except earth. Which they now found. Humanity is only a remnant of what it used to be, a foot note in universal history, about to go extinct.
I sincerely hope that, against all odds, one day someone reads this, as it means humanity will prevail. If so, i salute you, fellow human.
