《After Life》Chapter 23.7: Blitzkrieg

Cain interjects aggressively, “You think I’ll let your pitiful group protect anyone? You have to deal with me first!” With the clap of his hands a powerful gust of wind rushes in from two directions smashing the group together. Shado effortlessly dodges the attack, quickly teleporting the nomads back to the group. Everyone else is left slightly stunned, stumbling to ready themselves for the arrival of the hunters.
The horror of the situation finally kicks in causing cries from the NGP members to escalate. The Blood Hunters are ravaging everyone, not just those who opposed Death. They are attacking, slashing, and dragging indiscriminately including Death’s gang of ogres. Those with combat oriented abilities are able to hold their own but they are left trying to defend some of the humans, or those with lesser powers. Just by the sheer numbers, the NGP is hastily being overwhelmed.
Cain whispers into his hands then physically pushes the words forward. Carried by the wind, the words transmit to everyone, “Give up… Let them take you… Let them upgrade you…”
The words have a powerful effect draining the fight out of everyone. Death takes this opportunity to use Rush’s ability, speedily retreating to the human bunker. Cole alone is able to shake off Cain’s words.
It’s like Cain is a wizard! He’s using the wind to throw his voice! If he can do it, I can too!
Cole follows suit speaking into his hands before blasting the words across the battle, “Don’t listen to Cain! Fight for your lives! Fight Death! Fight Cain! Fight those creatures! Head for the human bunker! Protect each other, give it your all!”
The words have an instant energizing effect. One moment they were falling to the ground accepting their fate, the next turning into a collective raging fire. Raw spirit energy fills the air making it dense. Cole feels as though the air has turned as thick as water.

Cain scoffs, “I’m impressed Cole. It seems you know how to use your voice. At least to some degree, but that won’t be enough to save you!”
Dimitri, I need your strength!
Instinctively, Cain and Cole both ignite potent tornado filled punches. The swirling air clashes locking in place. Electricity saturates the air causing dispersed sparkles to illuminate the area. Cole’s attention is stolen by a particularly powerful Blood Hunter who is literally washing over the battle like a wave. His water attacks wiping through both NGP and Blood Hunters alike.
Rush cries, “That’s Gemming! That’s his water ability! What happened to him!?”
Cain sends another verbal attack weakening Rush, “That’s what’s going to happen to you because you’re too slow.”
Cole spots a Blood Hunter sneakily using the distraction to lunge at Rush from behind. He launches a powerful windblade but Cain quickly counters, initiating a barrage of wind blades of his own. This causes the hunter to turn his attention to Cole. It positions itself behind Cole before lunging for an attack.
I can’t defend attacks from both of them!
Before the hunter could make it to Cole, it was swiftly killed by impalement of a very large sword. Broin slices the body in two before saying, “You didn’t think that I’d miss out on a battle did you? I have a quota to fill.”
“Broin!? Thanks!”
“You keep your focus on Cain. We’ll keep the small ones off you.”
Cole is stuck watching the battle completely derail, finding himself locked into a heated battle of words. It’s all he can do to keep Cain’s wind powered verbal attacks at bay. With each of Gemming’s mighty water attacks it demonstrates how incredibly powerful an Ultra Blood Hunter is compared to the first generation. Each wave crashing over dozens of NGP members, making for perfect crowd control.

Shado calls to Arch, “We’re losing! What are we supposed to do?!”
Arch takes a sigh before replying, “You’re not going to like it, but it’s time. We need him here. There’s no other way.”
“Who?”
“Sariph.”
“What?! Have you completely lost it?!”
“Totally, but it's all part of the plan. Summon the demon!”
Shado shakes his head disapprovingly as he falls backwards into the shadow realm.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.

The Human Traitor
Nearly two centuries ago, humanity committed a grievous taboo and liberated itself from the Worldrenders, a race of seemingly immortal creatures that dominates two of the three continents. The humans established the seven Foretoken families, swearing to never live in captivity again. In the present day, there is nothing but peace and poverty in Truweld. A poor young woman makes her money from raiding the Worldrenders' plantations. Meanwhile, a genius inventor, a man born from a Foretoken family, idles his days and his talent away. And from the northern mountains, the home of the Worldrenders, a boy with a troubled past marches to the land of the humans. He calls himself a Worldrender and wields their powers. His objective is simple: he will conquer the humans or exterminate them all. This is an epic fantasy story featuring three protagonists, a slew of high fantasy races, and several mysteries at its core. There is a minimum of one chapter (1000 words or more) each week. This story is also being posted on r/HFY.
