《In Search of a Protagonist》05 - Torment

It is unbearable, the feeling of drowning and being burned at the same time, maybe this is what it feels to die in boiling water? That's the sensation that made the children faint. They could only handle a few seconds of it, maybe 30 to 40, but I'm far stronger. I only lost consciousness after 50 seconds or so.
New discovery. I can faint from pain.
When Drei woke up, and by consequence woke me up, we were in the bed in our room. it was already night time, no light came from the window. She is as lost as me, I have absolutely no idea of what happened after we passed out.
She stood there on the bed for a good 10 minutes before boredom was too great for a child and she left the room, going to the first floor. There we found Adel sitting on the wood couch with closed eyes.
But not for long, a second after we saw Adel she opened her eyes and looked at us. She is still making a villainous face with a wicked simile. Not funny to torture children until they faint Adel, really not funny.
"Hi, Good night."
"... Good night?" Drei answered unsure.
"Congratulations, you survived your first exchange and you are also the first to wake up"
"..."
"You can sit down or do whatever you want until the others wake up too, I do not want to explain everything twice. Also, do tell the others to wait here until everyone wakes and then you go call me, I'll be in the training room, do not bother me until then, understand?"
"Yes"
Adel went away to do whatever she was going to do. I bet she was bored and went to pass time training or something, she does look like the time that likes training, and Drei was here to pass on the message to the others, so there was no longer any meaning for her to stay here.
Drei took her time to examine the entire first floor, I would too, there was absolutely nothing to do here. I had not not paid enough attention to the amazing crafting of this house before, but the entire thing is incredibly well made, all from wood, but it is super smooth and shining, does not have divisions, it seems like it was made from one piece of giant wood. I wonder how big a tree must be to get an entire all of a single one.

By the time everyone woke up Drei had already investigated every inch of this floor. And I could not find a single joint, on the woods, even the furniture seems like it is part of the house itself.
She went to get Adel from the training room, funny enough Drei stopped at the stairs unsure how to go about this, yell Adel's name? Knock on the door? She was getting nervous now… after about 5 minutes of intense thinking she decided to knock on the door and wait, and I think it was the right choice.
Adel opened the door just a few seconds after, and the stressed up Drei got her back super straight.
"Sor..ry to disturb you…. Everyone is a...wake and on the first floor"
"Thanks, no need to apologize, I asked you to call me Drei, lets go"
"Yes, thank you"
OHH, I'm so proud of Drei! She did so well despite her stress, she knows how to thank people, even if she didn't really have to. Adel too, was so sweet, I can't even believe it. Anyways, we got upstairs and after some greetings, which everyone responded to, she began the Adel-like-terrible explanation.
"Like I explained this morning, we connected to Mother using Seontto and I activated the automatic mode for all of you, then you experienced Mother sending you a new clean mana while also filtering your own mana. Every day we expend mana for living, which is why we need to receive new mana, but our body also pollutes the inner mana in some ways, thus we need to clean the remaining, also with Mother's help. The reason you all passed out once I stopped the process was because you have no control over your own mana, the automatic process took over for you, you were able to feel but not control, once it stopped you were left alone and were unable to take control over your own body and mana, the feeling of despair, drowning, burning, dying, or whatever you felt, were your body fighting your will to literally breath, since you were unable to adapt, your brain had to shut you down to make you 'reset' and breathe again"
What about me? I have no need to physically breathe… yet I still passed out! Was it because of the pain? My very soul felt the paint Drei felt… Maybe I will pass out everytime Drei does? Independently of my own will? That sucks…

"It is rare, but there are cases where the undeveloped and untrained body of children cannot take the stress of the process and shut itself down... forever, never waking up."Did you need that pause? Are you trying to scare us?
"I'm glad everyone could handle that first experience. Now we will repeat the process twice a day until you can get control over the mana and not pass out at the end" She smiled again, does she like to see us suffering?!
"Let's start our second session! Everyone, sit down and put your hands on the Seonttos again, preferably the same you used this morning, it will be easier to get used to if you get aways the same Seontto. Today and tomorrow will keep the same 5 minutes we did this morning" THAT WAS 5 MINUTES? You lying right? It felt like 2 hours at MINIMUM!
"And after that we will increase 1 minute per day until we get to 15 minutes and hopefully, at that point you will have perfect, or some, control over your mana, at least while linking to Mother with the help of Seontto." She barely waited until everyone touched the damn stone and already activated it. You were so lovely with Drei when she went to get you just a minute ago! What happened?
Well, to be fair, the exchange itself is amazing and again I'm lost together with Drei in a world of pleasure, mana coming in and out of our body, feeling alive, breathing, feeling like the body is being cleaned and becoming stronger… For a long time, an indefinite amount of time in this confort, wishing to be here forever. So calming and gratifying.
Again I feel the flow of mana thinning out, I feel my sense of self coming back to me, but not before we get aggressively pull out again of the flow, and pass out… again with the same dreadful feeling of suffering and death, drowning in a boiling oil this time, isn't this worse than this morning?! That was my last thought, Drei feeling the same.
Wake up again, with my soul shaking because the host awoke, light coming in from the magic widow that I cannot see thru but light can shine normally, Drei again just sitting down on the bed trying to make sense of what happened. I don't blame you dear, it is pretty unfair if you ask me… I mean, you are what? 2 days old and the damn society already asking you to suffer this torture everyday? Twice a day!
It seems that this time Drei was not the first to wake, Zwei was already downstairs and Adel nowhere to be found, probably in the training room doing who-knows-what. We waited for the rest to wake up, this time Drei just waited sitting on the couch, they did not talk to each other… I cannot comprehend why, the first thing I would have done to pass time would be talking with other unfortunate children…
Zwei went to call Adel when all the children were waiting, Adel came into the room…
"Good morning children, you sure took your time to wake up" I so want to kill her right now…
"Good morning" They answered weakly
"Let's not lose time and get to the third session already, shall we?" The children obeyed and got into position, but none were happy doing so.
"Look, I know it hurts at the end, but it is a necessary procedure for you to learn, ok? Try to grasp the feeling of your mana going in and out, do not let yourself be swept up by the Seontto automatic function, try to control it yourself, tho I do not expect you to succeed just yet, you should try to control it, if you dont you will never get it. Let's start" It is not like I can help Drei in any way, but I sure hope she can control this damn process as soon as possible, I do not like to keep passing out, especially not out of pain.
Just like that the cycle repeated itself for the next 8 days, it is not like anything new happened during this time, just an infinite cycle of Seontto training, feeling good, feeling like dying, passing out then waking up to do everything again. Of course, to be fair with Drei, she was definitely improving, she was controlling the mana relatively ok during the exchange, but it did not help much at the end, where she still could not stop very well and still suffered a lot of pain and passed out. Every. Time.
Until the night 9 days after that she finally succeeded for the first time.

Recruit - An Infinite Labyrinth prequel
A prequel to The Infinite Labyrinth. The year is 1816. The British Empire is in full swing, under the auspices of King George III. The Infinite Labyrinth has been pouring out its product from beyond our reality and fostered a new industrial revolution. Times are changing, and the people of London are feeling the winds of the revolution while British Professionals push into the Labyrinth. The newly formed Artefact Hunting Company is looking for recruits, and they have new technology to help them. From the slums of London, they aim to recruit a new wave of Professionals. And make Zacharias and the Earl of Carnavon lots of money. So, for Rowan Rivers and a handful of lucky ones, it's time to head into the Labyrinth, and discover what makes it different from England. And what makes THEM different? Recruit is a bunch of chapters I wrote to create to the setting, mood, and game systems of the Infinite Labyrinth. It is NOT a complete story in the classic sense. It's more of a slice of life view of early days of a normal Professional from the Infinite Labyrinth, and it's heavy on info-dump. It's 90% canon - there's probably a bit of a difference between how some characters and common behaviour are portrayed here and how they'll come out in the main story. Set two years before the events that kick-start the main series, it features some of the secondary/peripheral characters of the Infinite Labyrinth and will tell you all about the basic mechanics of the Labyrinth's RPG system. It can be considered a spoiler, as the characters in the Infinite Labyrinth are going to need to figure out all that, on their own. But if you like a much deeper exposition in the mechanics, here it is. The entire prequel is about 80 pages long.
