《Metalbound》Chapter 5- Homeward

I rushed over to check on Four-Arms. He still had the sword sticking through him, and he had flames licking his chest. It appeared like it was burning him from the inside out.
"Take it out" he rasped.
I slowly pulled the flaming sword out of his chest, sweating from the heat. I could see the blackened flesh on his chest and it looked very serious. The weapon had gotten dangerously close to Four-Arms' heart.
Amara ran over to us and kneeled by my side.
"He is not doing good. He needs help now" she said.
He coughed, and rolled over to his side.
"You *cough* can't save me. I'm done" he wheezed.
He appeared more coherant than when he was locked up. I frantically looked around, hoping for something to stand out. I could not do anything to help him. He laid down his head on the ground, and let out a deep breath. He was gone.
Beside me, I heard Amara let out a strangled cough. A tear ran down her cheek.
"He sacrificed all for us. I don't think that we could have taken down the Daemon without him" she said.
Bella flapped over to us and put a hand over his chest. She closed his eyes gently.
"He is at peace" she said.
We walked back over to the caravan cars, and sat down on the rubble. Almost all of the Daemon's imps were dead, and half of the rebellious imps had died. The triplets had stacked the bodies in a pile, and lit them on fire.
The flames burned hot and fast, consuming the bodies. I looked away, it was a brutal sight. I hated the sight of death.
"Ryan, you need to get back through the rift" said Amara.
I looked back at it, and it seemed so far away. Wait, it appeared to be shrinking.

"The rift is destabilizing. We killed the creator of the rift, so it is going to collapse soon" said Amara.
"What do I do?" I said frantically. I didn't want to be stuck on an alien world.
Fiery wings erupted fromm Amara's back. "I can take you" she grinned.
"Calm down, it's an ability" said Amara. "It's called Wings of Fire. I should be able to get you through the rift in time"
"Go. We have this under control" said the triplets.
Amara picked me up by my armpits, and flapped her wings.
"Holy shit, you are a lot heavier than you look" she gasped.
We slowly gained height and speed as we headed toward the rift. It appeared to be cracking, and it was dangerously close to closing.
Amara groaned with effort, and blasted through the rift. We hit the ground hard on the other side, and left a trail in the dirt. I turned around just in time to see the rift destabilize and wink out of existence.
"Oh no. Amara, the rift closed" I yelled.
"It is okay" she chuckled. "I had nobody to go back to anyway".
I wasn't sure what to do. I had just brought a demon to Earth. She was nice, but still.
"Ryan, it's fine. If this world is newly integrated, the Academy will be here soon. I won't be here for long" she said soothingly.
"What is the Academy?" I asked her.

Sanguine
The Coles are probably the definition of a small dysfunctional family, even if they weren’t the worst in existence; they would probably be lauded as an example of the term. The Coles were a small family though. The father, Oliver Cole, was an asshole ex-football jock who bounced around in small paying jobs after wasting most of his life drinking, drugging and whoring. The daughter, Stacy Cole, was smart, but had many issues including anger, trouble with authority, and occasional suicidal thoughts, and was kicked out of many a school for disruptive behaviour. The son, Mike Cole, was innocent, and tried his best to be kind to anyone and everyone, however his own speech impediment, and slow nature only aided people to bully and belittle him, including his own father. The Coles were indeed a dysfunctional family. At least they were, until they got to the small town near the border between the United States and Canada, Sanguine. Welcome to Sanguine. You will stay. With the exception of the first chapter, each chapter only follows one character. The first chapter is the only chapter in which I will include 'Sides' where it follows a different character. This is a short Lovecraftian story, it won't go above seventeen chapters. Note: the book cover is my first attempt, it might not even remain like it is, I was just tired of seeing the standard 'no cover' thing on it.

A note from the Author: PLEASE leave a review and alert me of any plot holes, weak portions, and anything else. I am in desperate need of beta readers and feedback. I wrote this around the new year, 2020. It's about 40k words and the first in a planned series that follows Gar "Alany" Darron and his agency of detectives as they track missing persons in the city of Throne. I have the sequel planned but not written. Once this one is completely uploaded, I'll be uploading another, unrelated series that as of right now is roughly 160k words long, and somewhere in there, I'll write the sequel to Frame of Mind. I plan to go back and forth between the two series for the foreseeable future. Thanks for reading.
