《Cosmic Contingency》Chapter 38 - Metaphysical Aspects

With the free time that the group had, Vera, Ru, Rika and Jorak were having a chat while Cyziel started reading the information stored in the memory cards. Most of the cards contained some basic information about magic which he didn't really find useful. There were also some interesting information on the history of different races but Cyziel skipped it since he already have virtual books regarding those topics. He finally noticed some cabinets that are locked at the end of the library.
"Vera! What's inside this?" Cyziel shouted, pointing at the large cabinet in front of him.
Vera immediately went to Cyziel. "These cabinets contain books. Actual physical books. Most of it are ancient writings. Some were passed on from our ancestors. Some were taken and translated from the capital. A few are of unknown origin." She paused then stared at the Cyziel for a while. "Do you want to check them out?"
"Would that be fine? It doesn't look that its for everyone to see."
"My parents didn't tell me about not sharing these books so I can do what I want with this." Vera touched the cabinet then uttered some words. A part of the cabinet that she touched, momentarily shone.
"Oh! I am right. That's no simple spell. That's a sealing magic!" Cyziel uttered.
Vera jerked, surprised that Cyziel recognized it. "Uh! Yes. Its nothing really special. Its just some simple magic that my parents placed there. I was just lucky to uncover it. You could probably do it yourself."
"Well, uncovering someone else's seal is not easy. Not even for me unless--- I brute force it." Cy chuckled. "But its still a breath of fresh air seeing magic that are not elemental spells."
"Hmph! Stop praising me." Vera opened the cabinet and there were 4 shelves of books. "You won't be able to read the books in the first two shelves. It is written in the Lucrim language. The third one contains some English books. As for the last shelf," Vera pointed at the bottom shelf containing only two books. "These are the-"
Cyziel quickly knelt down and picked up one of the two bottom books. To be specific, they were two thin notebooks. He immediately opened it to some random page.
"Hey. Take care of it! Those are-" Vera shouted.
"Venturian writings!" Cyziel exclaimed. His eyes opened wide as he quickly skimmed at the pages of the book.
"You understand them?" Vera asked.
Ru, Rika and Jorak stood up and run towards the two.
"What are the two of you talking about?" Jorak asked.
"This book is written by one of my people!" Cyziel answered.
"What does it say?" Ru asked.
Cyziel slowly walked to the nearest couch as he started reading the book loudly. The four surrounded him to listen.
"A Large creature appeared deep in the north sea. It has killed every people that were sent to investigate it. The creature is currently deemed to dangerous to approach. Exploration to the north was banned."
........
"The Eastern forest seemed to have changed. It has became even more dangerous than before. The only survivor from the eastern exploration died after he delivered his final message. The forest is alive."
.........
"A mysterious place was discovered in the southern forest. It was somewhere near the habitat of the wildlings. We called it the Divine Trial. There is more than 70% fatality rate for the trial. Most of the survivors are those with the rare marks including the royal family members."
........
"It was learned that those who survived the trial was able to pass the barrier. This is the greatest discovery of our people. It was learned that the world outside is even bigger than we could imagine. More people are being trained to take the Divine Trial."
........
"Another Divine Trial was discovered in the western mountain. It was a quite different from Southern Trial. The survival rate is greater than 80%. The Southern Trial was now restricted and the Western Trial would now be the new passage for our people. It would soon also be my time to take the Trial."
"Its a journal isn't it?" Rika asked.
"Yes. That southern trial should be the one we discovered in the cave!" Cyziel surmised. "This means that my family has really passed through the barrier! I might have no other reason to go to the capital anymore!"
"Then, are you going by yourself outside the barrier?" Ru concerningly asked.
"No. I will bring Volus and Ortix with me." Cyziel uttered.
"I'll come with you!" Vera said.
"Me too!" Ru added.
"No! It is too dangerous there! You all should just stay here."
"Cyziel is right! Do you two want to die?" Jorak interjected. He understood that the two are getting carried by their emotions.
Vera frowned. "Its not up to-"
"Why don't you read the other book too?" Rika asked Cyziel, wanting to change the topic. She didn't really like the idea of them going to the world beyond the barrier.
Cyziel nodded then took the other book.
"The outside world was beautiful! There are a lot of creatures that we do not know of! The energies around also seemed more abundant."
"Our people started to look for new place to settle. We need to protect ourselves from the danger of this new world."
.................
"I almost died! There was traitor in our ranks! There was chaos in the outside world! We do not know who started it but he is really strong."
"I was scared. I returned inside the barrier. It might be better for me to stay here like some other people."
................
"I visited the Southern temple where the trial was located. Our people guarding it are all dead. I dare not to go further. There seemed to be some creature inside it. I don't think that I am strong enough to fight it. I chose to flee."
"I visited the 3rd principality but there was no people there."
"The 2nd principality was also empty but it is expected since they all joined the great exploration."
"I finally returned to the 1st principality. A lot of the people are dead. Some buildings are also in ruins. I do not know what happened. Luckily, there are still a few survivors. They said that the place was attacked by some cloaked guy. It happened after the last royalty had left for the barrier. The murderer seemed to know the place very well. He was even able to kill the people who hid in the castle. Fortunately, the survivors never saw him again."
................
"I have decided to stay with the other survivors. We learned that there are also other survivors hiding in the western mountain."
..............
"Countless new people arrived but they don't seem to be the same as us. They were in the thousands or even in millions. We do not know what they are capable of so we decided to hide."
"We have been observing them for quite some time. They seemed to be much weaker than us but they also seem to reproduce faster."
"Another race appeared and they are capable of also using magic, albeit weaker than us."
"The two races seemed to have created an alliance. The few remaining people that we have are starting to have a debate whether we should go and interact with them."
"A cloaked man?" Cyziel pondered. He was thinking of the man he was following before he was sent to Daraksta. Were they the same person? Is he a Venturian?
"Doesn't this mean that some of your people are still living here?" Ru said.
"Yes!" Cyziel sighed. "Well, back to the original plan. I guess it would be better for me to meet those survivors first. I might learn some important things from them."
"That book doesn't look new. Do you think that they would still be there? What about the murderer. Wouldn't it be dangerous if he is still there?" Rika asked.
"I am not sure but I hope that they still are." Cyziel scowled, curling his two hands into a fist. "As for that murderer, if he is also a Venturian then it is my responsibility as a royalty to punish him and if it is who I think he is then I need to repay him back from before."
"Calm down. You can't get too angry!" Ru reminded.
"Vera! What about the other remaining books there?" Jorak pointed at the open cabinet.
"As what I have just previously said to Cyziel, the remaining books there are just some ancient books of our people or translated books from the capital. I have already read most of it. " Vera stood up and went to take one of the books in the third book shelf. It was a thick hard bound book. "This one talks about the magicus and other magic related information."
"Oh! Boring." Jorak waved his left hand away. "Is there any other interesting books?"
"Wait! Let me see it!" Cyziel shouted.
Vera got back to her seat and passed the book to Cyziel. Cyziel then went to skim the first few pages of the book then proceeded to check random parts of the book and ending it by reading the last topics in the book.
"What's interesting with that book. We already got lots of virtual books on magic." Jorak uttered.
Were you able to read it Cyziel? I could read it for you." Ru suggested.
"Yeah. I could already read English. There are only some words I am not familiar with." Cyziel then looked at Vera. "You have already read this? Is this one of the translated books? Do you know the source of this book?"
"Yes. Its one of the translated books. I don't actually know who wrote the original. It is pretty straightforward though. It is just that some of the magic theories are still too hard for me." Vera answered.
"No. That means that you are talented enough. This book is fairly similar to the books I used as a kid. The chapters and how they are discussed in order are no different. It is just that the topics at the end were not familiar to me." Cyziel then paused. "Its like the E-compendium on advance magic that I received from instructor Larka."
"Then some of the books that we have might have been influenced by your people!" Rika uttered.
Cyziel nodded. "But I am kind of wondering why it seemed that it mostly only contains elemental magic. Did my people purposely removed other types of magic?"
"Do you mean things like soul magic, mental magic, force magic or enchant magic? They are usually included in hybrid spell books because they are also considered combat arts." Vera explained.
"That makes sense but I am not only talking about that. For example, the sealing magic that you used. Never mind it though, they might have their own reasons for it. They might have also just separated it to other books. What's important is that this book doesn't seem that old and further strengthen the possibility that my people are still living in the capital."
"What parts of the book seem new to you?" Jorak asked.
"Well, starting from this one."
Restoration Magic
This magic focuses on the mystical energies that helps in repairing the destruction caused to all of creation. Creation includes both the living and non-living things that came from Divine energy and its two child energies (Aether and Nether).
.........
Restoration can be done by replenishing the Aether or Nether energies of the target. It does not require the usage of essences but it would require more time and energy to heal someone. The following are the essences that could be used in conjunction with the energies for restoration.
........
Light Based - One of the most well known essence used in casting restoration magic. It is fairly useful for humans, animals and plants that naturally absorb the energy of light. Great for all around purification.
......
Water Based - A very soothing element. Useful for lesser injuries and reducing pain. Good for purification in Aether Creatures.
.......
Fire Based - Not very good for Aether creatures but does help in closing injuries. Good for purification in Nether creatures.
......
Life Based - It is the original essence used for restoration magic. Currently, people with affinity for this essence are rare. Can save even life threatening injuries.
.......
Holy Based - Holy is not an essence. This is meant to portray that the restoration magic is powered by Divine energy instead of Aether or Nether energy. This means that it could be mixed with the above essence (Holy Light, Holy Water, Holy Fire). Divine energy and Life essence would be the most powerful combination for restoration magic but it is better to identify it as a Creation magic since its viability doesn't stop at healing.
"You do not have healing magics before?" Vera inquired.
"Ah.. We do! It is just that these are compiled quite nicely in a single topic. Before, you would usually randomly encounter them when you read about spells. Anyway, there is another topic that I saw that is quite interesting." Cyziel flipped back to the early chapters in the book. "This one!"
The Metaphysical Aspects Of Humanity And The Modern Human Evolution
Why do we need to understand this and what is its importance with magic. The reason is that the magicus is one of the four aspects of humanity. Balancing the magicus with the other aspects of the mind, body and spirit is the key that allowed us to breakthrough the limits of humanity.
The body that we know of is made up different materials that allowed itself to function. But we also know that all of the materials around originated from a single divine particle combining with the Aether energy. This combination with the Aether energy is what links the body with the magicus.
The mind is a very mysterious aspect. How are we able to think? Why are some people smarter than the other? This has been studied by almost all the human races but we are still not able to find a concrete answer. What we know of is that a great mind is needed to cast more complex magic.
The spirit which pertains to the soul is another mystery that we had. Fortunately, an unknown contributor gave a more detailed explanation on our soul. He said that it is actually a blueprint of our body. It contained the information like how we would be created or how our body should function. Accessing these information is still not known to us.
Finally, The Magicus. Our magicus allows us to connect to the elemental planes. It also allows us to detect and feel the energy around us. It allows us to empower the other aspects and actually create a link to them.
Like the other aspects, each person has a different quality of magicus. Some are born unlucky that their magicus are almost insignificant that its only use was the ability to let them live and adapt in this new environment. For those that are fortunate, they are able to use magic that breaks the law of the world.
Another similarity with the other aspects is that its initial state is not final. It can grow, evolve or even mutate. With enough practice, your magicus can grow stronger. With enough exposure, your magicus might be able to connect to more elemental planes.
.........
Modern magic is currently ranked based on the said energy and essences required to cast the spell and the complexity of the spell.
There are currently six Magus titles excluding normal human, it is actually based on the state or growth of your magicus.
Rank 0 - Normal Human (No magicus, cannot use magic)
Rank 1 - Acute (Sensitive to one of the mystical energies. Can cast non-elemental spells.)
Rank 2 - Novice (Your magicus could allow you to cast spells of up to level 0-2 in rank in at least 1 element)
Rank 3 - Acolyte (Your magicus could allow you to cast spells levels 3 to 5 in rank in at least 1 element)
Rank 4 - Adept (Your magicus could allow you to cast spells level 6 to 8 in rank in at least 2 elements)
Rank 5 - Virtuoso (Your magicus could allow you to cast spells of up to level 9 to 11 in rank in at least 2 elements)
Rank 6 - Archmage (Your magicus could allow you to cast spells level 12 or greater in at least 3 elements)
There are three Logos titles excluding normal human, it is based on the growth of the mind.
Rank 0 - Normal Human
Rank 1 - Awakened (Most people who was born with a magicus is able to reach this rank. It enables us to perceive the energies and essences and feel its connection with us. Memory is increased.)
Rank 2 - Enlightened (Humans who are able to use mental magic is considered to be in this level. They attained sufficient connection and balance with the mind and their magicus. Calculating abilities are increased.)
Rank 3 - Eminence (The mind is now not limited by the physical aspect of the brain.Their ability to learn and understand magic are on a very high level. Comprehension is increased.)
There are currently four Cultivation or Evolution titles excluding the normal human, it is based on the growth of the body.
Rank 0 - Normal Human (Cannot use Aether to reinforce the body. )
Rank 1 - Neophyte (Body is strong enough to continuously be empowered by aether energy. Able learn low level combat arts.)
Rank 2 - Advocate (Natural body regeneration is increased. Able to use multiple combat arts at the same time.)
Rank 3 - Premier (Body's connection with the other aspect is strong enough to use force arts. Able to stack similar combat arts without much strain to the body.)
Rank 4 - Deviant (The body has evolved. Able to enchant and transform the body with magic and combat arts.)
"This is really interesting for me. Does this mean that the humans of this world has reached these levels?" Cyziel asked. He was really surprised since this means that there are humans here that are as capable as them. Did he underestimate the new habitants of this world?
"I actually have heard about the Magus titles but I didn't know about the last 2 ranks. Even our teachers are only at most an adept." Ru answered.
"I heard before that there is one Archmage in the capital." Vera uttered. "I am not sure though how true this is."
"I didn't know that there are ranks for the mind. I heard of the body cultivation ranks before from some Corynis." Jorak added. "I haven't heard of a deviant before though. Maybe Draka would know of this."
"Cyziel what rank do you think you are in each-"
*Bam!* Before Rika could continue her question, the door to the room abruptly opened. A woman of similar appearance to Vera entered.

Cultivation Anomaly
Follow the journey of an individual given a classic cheat trope in a cultivation world. What does a man do when he finds himself unsure of who he really is yet is given a cheat? What really happens to a cultivation world when it is overrun by MC level characters? Is the cultivation world just run by cruel young masters, short-sighted elders and uncaring experts? Note: Tags may be removed or added to this story as it progresses. For example, I added the harem tag because I wasn't sure if it would appear so be forewarn. Also, productive feedback is always appreciated even it may be ignored. Note 2: Original idea inspired by "Arrogant Young Master Template A Variation 4". I wanted to do something similar but have a more gritty realistic feel. The system SHOULD differentiate as the story goes on but if it doesn't it means I need a rewrite. Either way, read AYMTV4, it's great. Note 3: If you give criticism to be helpful, please try to be descriptive, specific, and focused on making my story better, not changing the story to how you would write it. Beast

Traders, merchants, colonists, and Pirates live risky lives along the fringes as the politics from the inner systems fail to see the larger threats beyond their borders. A lone human finds himself far from home with no memories to how he arrived. A failing Trade vessel plays on a desperate gamble, while a malicious parasite searches for a suitable host. ............................................. Author's note: Beast is a story that I wrote a long, long time ago. Some of you might have read it then, back when it was posted on reddit over at r/HFY. It was my first webfiction and made in the spirit of that subreddit's "genre" of humanity being awesome. But, it is also a story that has bothered me a little bit. Just like most new writers tend to do, I made mistakes and errors that feel painful to reread. A Space Opera will be a Space Opera, but I had prose that makes present-me cringe. Still, at the same time, the story is still very much a tale I've never given up on. It was my first adventure into fiction: Beast was a crazy adventure with bodysnatching aliens, galactic war, threats from across the universe... Posting this story here is a way to try and redeem myself a bit. I won't call it a complete rewrite, because it's not, but I have wanted to go through and correct some of the major issues Beast has for a long time and put it somewhere more accessible to read (instead of as posts/comments on reddit) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. Additional corrections you might notice are welcome.
