Chapter 7
********************Cal POV************************
All of my early memories are filled with my big brother Keltor. He always gave me his attention and played with me. Being with him made me happy.
When I started going to the school in our village the other kids avoided me. I found out it was because of my two toned hair. Since my hair was brown with red streaks in it the other kids though I was weird.
I didn't care to much because the only person that I wanted to like me was big brother Keltor.
On one of the days where two of my brothers returned home from their school they had a sparing match. It was Keltor and Paltor. Big brother Keltor was the one who won and I thought he looked so cool.
After he won he walked over to Paltor stretched his hand out to him and said.
Keltor:"You'll never beat me old man."
I thought it was funny so I laughed. After that I decided to become a Mage too, but I was told that I would be better suited as a swordswoman.
I wasn't very happy about it, but I wanted to be strong to fight along side big brother Keltor. I trained really hard everyday with Leon's teacher. He's was an old mercenary that lived in our village.
Big brother Keltor took me on a walk on day and told me he was going to give me something. It was a spell that allowed me to see him whenever I want. I didn't tell him but since it absorbed some of his mana it started to tingle when ever he touched me.
I loved sleeping with him. He was so big and warm that I could sleep much more comfortably. I loved big brother more than anything.
When I was about 7 Paltor and Leon returned home. They talked with mom and dad for a while and I saw mother start crying. Father(Haren) came over to me and hugged me and said "Keltor won't be coming home anymore." I got really angry at him.
Cal:"Liar! Keltor promised to visit me in a week!"
Haren:"He's gone. He can't keep that promise."
I ran away because I didn't want to listen to him. I kept running for what felt like hours and I fell to my knees crying. When I could cry anymore I tried to look at the image of big brother Keltor, but it wouldn't work.
The mana that he injected into me was no longer active and couldn't produce the image anymore. I slowly stood up with my legs wobbling and headed back towards the house.

I went straight to my room and went to sleep. I got up the next morning ate and left for sword practice. I felt like I had nothing left so I decided to focus completely on my training.
We had his funeral a couple days later, but we didn't have the body. We were told it was completely destroyed by one of his experiments.
After a few years I started going to Vaneth Academy. I got a new instructor who taught me how to dual wield swords. I felt much better with two swords. I continued my sword training and started learning some basic magic.
I wasn't born with a magic affinity, so I couldn't do much except strengthen my body which was already pretty tough.
I found out that big brother Keltor was working on body modification magic which was a relatively unexplored magic. He was being funded by some nobles that hoped to find the secret of immortality.
I found out that non of his research notes were still around, but I did hear about his last day. Apparently he was seen with an old leather bound book late in the afternoon headed towards one of the labs used for mixing alchemic potions.
I asked about the book, but no body new anything about it. The alchemy teachers that apparently were close by when he died said they heard a loud boom coming from the room he was in. By the time they got there the room was destroyed and if a book was in there it must have been destroyed too.
I tried to take over his research, but I didn't have the knowledge or magical capacity. Body modification magic cost large amounts of mana. I put the research on hold for a while because I was quite depressed at my lack of ability.
My younger sister Fraya was born with brown hair, and it never gained streaks like mine. She was really attached to me and always wanted to go to Vaneth Academy with me.
Since only people with a special hair color could enroll as a student I came up with a plan. I had her become my personal maid and live at the Academy with me. She was very happy about it and seemed to enjoy cleaning and doing my laundry she even cleaned my swords and armor for me.
I was the strongest warrior in the Academy and all the girls in the swordsmanship program looked up to me.
One time when I was coming back to Gart after visiting my parents I came across a group of people being attacked by monsters. I watched for a second because I saw this girl with red hair who looked a year or two younger than me fighting them off trying to protect her family.

I suddenly thought of Keltor and I jumped in and instantly killed all of the monsters. I asked if they were all right and was told the girl with red hair needed healing. I couldn't actually use healing magic it was just body modification magic that forced you to heal yourself that I had learned during research.
The girl stayed quiet while I healed her. After that I said goodbye to them and went back to Vaneth Academy.
I got a new job as the peace keeper of our school. Since the swordsman and mages couldn't beat me in a fight I was assigned to stop all fighting between students unless it was an official dual.
There were a lot of problems. Most of them came from the ones who were born into nobility. They hated the fact that the commoners were promoted to nobility just because they were born with special hair colors.
I had to break a few nobles noses since I too was born a commoner. All of the swordsman wanted me to be their wife and constantly proposed to me offering me all sorts of things if would take them. The mages were mostly scared of me and kept me at a distance. I didn't like any of them and tried to stay away whenever I could. I had no plans of currently finding a husband.
One day I woke up early because I had this weird feeling. Something felt very nostalgic about it. I went through the whole day with that feeling.
After night came I was lying in my bed when I started thinking about Keltor. I wished he was there so I could cuddle up with him. All of a sudden the image appeared in my sight. I saw me and Keltor together. I was so happy to see him again that I started to cry. I had finally realized what that weird feeling was.
The mana that big brother Keltor placed in me, his mana was active again. I didn't know what this meant, but I was glad to have the image.
I walked into the peace keepers office one day and found Fraya talking to some boy. He was about five foot twelve with short blue hair and looked pretty average.
Cal:"Who's this and why is he in our office."
Fraya:"This is Stef. He's going to be joining as a new peace keeper."
Stef:"It's nice to meet you Cal, I'm looking forward to working under you."
Cal:"Do you think you can handle this job, it can be pretty tough."
Stef:"I'm sure I'll be fine."
I didn't really care so I decided to ignore him for now.
Cal:"Fraya could you send a message out to the magicians guild. I would like to hire someone with a huge mana pool to assist me with Keltors research."
Fraya:"I'll go do that right now."
Fraya left leaving me alone with Stef.
Stef:"So who's Keltor?"
Cal:"My brother. He died and I took over his research."
I was pretty annoyed at his question. I always got annoyed when ever I was forced to remember that big brother Keltor is dead.
He didn't say anything after that.
One day I came into the office and found Fraya and Stef filling out some papers.
Cal:"What are you filling out there."
Fraya:"Some of the more experienced mages got into a fight in an Advanced fire magic class and tossed a few fire balls around. They hit some explosive powder the teacher had and wounded the teacher."
Cal:"So what's happening to them?"
Stef:"They have been confined to their rooms and their judgement was left up to us."
I walked over and set at my desk.
Stef:"Oh. I forgot to tell you but I almost killed your sister."
Cal:"What! You bastard!"
I jumped up ran over to him and shoved my fist into his face breaking his nose.
Stef:"ooooowww! Fuck I said almost!"
Cal:"What the hell did you do."
Stef:"I was having a duel with a student and I went as easy on him as I could so he was able to deflect one of my fir balls. I didn't notice I headed towards Fraya, but luckily someone was watching my match jumped in and stopped it."
Cal:"Watch your fire balls next time if that person wasn't there Fraya would have been killed!"
Stef:"Hey it all turned out good and Fraya got herself a knight in shining armor."
Fraya:"Hey shut up!"
I looked towards Fraya and saw her blushing.
*Oh no! Has she found her first love!*
Stef:"I looked into him and apparently he's trying to get into this academy."
Cal:"You think he can."
Stef:"When he deflected that fire ball all he did was coat his arm in water magic and slapped it right out of the air. He must be a master water Mage already."
Fraya:"Maybe he's just here to learn more in preparation for the coming war."
Stef:"I wonder what this new Demon King plans on doing now after destroying a dwarven city."
Cal:"Who cares. If he tries to attack this city I'll take his head myself."
Stef:"You think you can beat a Demon King. They're a lot stronger than the students here."
I decided to ignore him and left the office.Back to Main Page

Bleached Nightmare
500 years into the future, technological progress has stagnated. Wracked by a series of problems like climate change, lack of resources and the innate human lust for war, the geopolitical landscape of planet Earth is radically different, and quality of life is far from what it was in the past. While technical development and research into realistically feasible space travel has made leaps and bounds, this has come at the cost of a world that is reeling from centuries of technical stagnation in other aspects of life. The establishment of a mining colony on Mars has led to the discovery of a new, rare material called sarinium; though it is extremely tensile and durable, it has a very low melting point. The discovery of this metal leads to large mechanical infantry- dubbed 'Spirit Striders', they are six to ten meters tall and as famed for the pride they provide a nation as they are a lethally mobile heavy weapons platform. The story follows the character of Marilin, who must both figure the enigma that is her past, and what this means for her allegiances in the future. Despite her genetically physical frailty, she seeks to gain power through a vessel that will channel her wish to change the world- the Spirit Strider. --- I hope you all enjoy my work. This is a story that I began writing over four years ago in my beginning years of high school, and have cast aside unfinished in the past two years. Though it is not up to my current standards, I hope you all may find some enjoyment in it. Happy reading.
