《Escapia: A VRMMO》Chapter 2: Comforting

3 days have already passed since the incident.
People were sleeping under the trees, on the grass, since the house system had not been opened yet. Locking the home system to a level instead of giving it to the player in the first place was of course the genius idea of genius developer Kuudere Dev.
Almost 500 people lost their lives. Meanwhile, Lockheart and Daemon were continuing their pathetic grind. Daemon and Lockheart were hunting wolves in the forest to level up. They hardly slept at all. Even though they were dizzy from lack of sleep, they continued:
"Hey, Daemon? How many wolves do we need to kill? I'm tired..."
"Stop whining Lockheart! We will stop when we are level 20. Stop distracting me while not even doing anything!"
Lockheart hurled a green light at one of the wolves with his short wand, damaging it. Wolf's health bar barely turned from light green to yellow. The wolf got angry and started running. Lockheart started to scream, Daemon slid in front of Lockheart and cut the wolf in the stomach with his sword just as the wolf was about to leap and strike with its claws. The wolf stepped back.
"You are just a buffer, your only purpose is healing or buffing me when I do all the work. That's how support classes work"
Lockheart sighed:
"If this is such a huge problem for you, I can change my class."
Daemon sighed back:
"It's unlocked until level 50"
"Why everything has to be level locked! Because of these level locks, we don't even have a goddamn house! Like what type of shitty game design is that?"
Daemon rolled his eyes and asked:
"Did you seriously join this game because it has a house system? That's a woman moment right there, yikes."

The stabbed wolf started running back towards Daemon and slid to the left to escape the wolf's attack, then backstabbed it with the sword. Wolf's body disappeared and fell into grey pieces of particles:
"Also it's normal to have level locks in a grindfest MMO! And Kuudere Dev said this was like a mobile MMO, remember? He needs those stupid numbers to add new systems once in a while."
Daemon got behind the wolves:
"Lockheart! Use combo skills! Your MP is full!"
Lockheart took her wand and shouted:
"SPEED BUFF! ATTACK BUFF! AGİLİTY BUFF!"
Daemon's attack speed and movement speed increased for 3 hours. Daemon quickly killed 5 wolves:
"See Lockheart, with the power of teamwork-"
"DAEMON! BEHIND YOU!"
"What are you-"
A wolf showed up behind Daemon and knocked him down with its claw:
"O-ouch… Lockheart can you check how many XP do we need to level up now?"
"Sure…"
Lockheart clicked the team menu, then checked her and Daemon's levels.
I need 3995 more EXP. And you need 1885 more... So we need to kill 3 more wolves, right?"
Daemon threw his sword to the wolf and both of them leveled up:
"Wolves give 5000 EXP per kill! You need to know these, Lockheart!"
Lockheart whined:
"How do you even know all of these?!"
Daemon replied:
"I've been reading the game's guides and tutorials. They are all emotionless text dumps because, yeah you already know the reason… But still, at least try to read them because well, we are trapped in a game! Wait, are you ok?"
Lockheart sank to the ground, fell to her knees, and began to tremble and sob constantly:
"I miss my friends…"
Daemon pathetically tried to comfort her by patting her back:
"I'm sorry..."

"I've been only talking to you for almost a week and it's traumatizing…"
"O-ouch! Look I may have been treating you harshly but the only reason for that is we need to survive right now. There are a lot of psychotic players craving loot, bloodlust, and all this stuff…"
An angry glint appeared in Lockheart's blue eyes:
"SO THAT'S WHY YOU 'DEBATED' WITH ME?!"
Daemon lowered his head in shame:
"I... I just told you what I thought.
Lockheart:
"Even beyond that, but why are you so calm when… you know… far away from people you love?
Daemon nervously replied:
"Don't think that I'm not sad. But I don't show this to other people! Like I'm not a woman you know..."
Lockheart sobbed:
"STOP WITH YOUR WOMAN SHIT!"
"Oh sorry, I talked without thinking..."
Lockheart glared at Daemon:
"If you talk like this ever again, I'm gonna leave the party..."
"PLEASE DON'T… Look Lockheart, everyone feels exactly like you, didn't you see everyone's reaction when Kuudere Dev announced the incident?
Lockhart frowned:
"You have a point..."
"Just, try to get used to it, ok? Right now, just focus on grinding and trying to have fun in this new world, ok? Right now, they probably put us in the hospital with VR in our heads and put us on an IV or something. I know it sounds scary, but if I were you, I'd be relieved and encouraged to think my family is visiting me while I play."
Lockheart was surprised to see Daemon speaking prudent, then smiled warmly:
"Thank you."
Daemon winked:
"Also, everyone I love is still one anime dimension far away from me… So don't worry about that."
After his cringe joke, Lockheart rolled her eyes:
"I can't believe that I just vented an otaku neet."
Daemon pouted at Lockheart:
"Hey!"
Lockheart giggled:
"C'mon dude! I can make jokes too!"

The Granddaughter of Time
Teresa Hargrove was okay with giving up. She knew the Earth was doomed and there was nothing to be done about it. What she was not okay with was the Future, an enigmatic woman nearly fanatical in her devotion to making a difference, dragging her along — seemingly, to prove her wrong. It turns out though that the Future is very hard to understand. This story contains heavy themes, including mental illness, existential crisis and death. However, I still tried to eventually convey a message of hope. Several mythical and metaphorical beings in the shape of humans will appear in most chapters. However, they are not meant to be of a specific ethnicity or social background and are instead perceived differently by people around them. For your reading pleasure, feel free to imagine them any way you’d like, even if your imagination contradicts descriptions from the story. Enjoy!~
