《Who Cares!!?》chapter 24

Jason and Alex had almost covered the entire park, making sure they had eyes on everything.
‘Hey Jason, how do you suspect that a person might or might not be from Jira?’
‘Simply by observing. WS agents are also psychological experts. By simply observing trivial details and small habits such as facial expressions, body language, etc. We can tell many things about a person.’
‘Cool, I’ll try this too.’
‘Hmph, go ahead.’
Jason decided to teach Alex the difference between them.
After all, it takes years of practice and dedication, including experience which can’t be taught in books to be able to perform such a feat.
‘I found him, Look!!’
Alex pointed towards a man wearing a hood in the crowd.
‘What! Impossible’
Jason’s pride was shattered.
‘H-how?’
‘By applying what you said, first of all, the man’s face is hidden, so it’s impossible to read his facial expression, but the same can’t be said for the people around him.’
Jason was speechless as Alex continued.
‘You will see that they are at least six people constantly looking at him from the corner of their eyes. Over there, there and there.’
Alex pointed towards six people who looked like they were busy enjoying themselves, but in their field of vision, the man wearing the hood was always there.
‘After a minute passes, they switch people and switch places with another set of six people. Did I get that right?’
‘You are correct……’
‘Well that was to be expected, you’re a great teacher Jason’
‘Shall we follow them?’
Jason’s perspective of Alex rose a little.
‘Yes’
‘I wonder why is he collecting DNA samples from so many animals?’
‘Perhaps he is trying to merge it with human DNA and is not getting satisfactory result.’
‘If that’s the case, then why doesn’t he try the DNA of a monkey or something? Scientists are always on ranting about how similar humans are to them, and our DNA is 98% alike.’

‘That is a good idea. You should go tell him that.’
Even WS agents can be sarcastic. Jason was trying to focus on the mission, observing every small detail while Alex kept bugging him.
Jason was trying to guess whose DNA sample the man will try to collect today.
‘I don’t think I need to, it looks like he had the same idea too this time.’
They both watched as the man walked randomly like a tourist while slowly making his way towards the gorilla section, coincidentally the only place where the cameras were yet to be set up.
‘It had to be the gorilla section, the only area that we had not implanted yet.’
Jason was irritated by this fact.
‘Nothing we can do about it now, come on, let’s go.’
Alex and Jason both watched as the hooded man walked to the edge of a gorilla’s cage and took out a professional camera.
'He is trying to collect the DNA of the gorilla beringei graueri.’
‘Dude, just call it a gorilla. It’s amazing how you can say those words without stuttering.’
Normally, nobody would even pay 100 yen for a mere housefly, but in that gorilla’s cage, there was one which was worth over a million yen.
The man looked like a simple photographer taking pictures of the gorilla. Trying different angles from different sides.
The truth was the camera was a controller to remotely control a nano fly.
The nano fly started its journey as soon as the man turned on the camera/controller.
It peeked its head out from a small hole just enough to house a common housefly. It came out and, after a quick diagnosis, it took flight.
It flew into the cage skillfully flying and maneuvering its way onto the gorilla’s hairy back.
It landed successfully onto it’s back and with a tiny titanium needle, pierced it and blood came out. It then started sucking blood, and it sucked as much blood as 3 female mosquitoes would at a time.

After filling up its cartridge, it flew back and out of the cage into its small house, just to head out again to retrieve more blood.
The nano fly managed to extract about 2 tablespoons of blood without harming the gorilla in any way.
The gorilla didn’t even realize he just lost some blood.
Jason blamed himself for the fact that there were no cameras in the gorilla section, unaware of the fact that the man had already started collecting the DNA and was almost finished.
Alex realized that. He saw that one particular fly wasn’t just flying randomly in the cage, but it had a specific pattern. He knew something was wrong.
‘Jason, we don’t have time to sulk.’
Jason didn’t even respond.
‘Anyway, I’ll go and try to uncover the hooded man to identify him.’
Alex went away while Jason was deep in thought.
--They just happened to go into the gorilla isle? The only place where cameras were yet to be setup. Coincidence? Wait, it could not be that…
In amidst of it, he realized something frightening.
--It couldn’t be that THEY WERE WATCHING US THIS WHOLE TIME!!!
As soon as Jason realized this, he yelled,
‘ALEX STOP!! IT’S A TRAP!!!’
But it was a hopeless attempt.
Alex didn’t have a plan on how to uncover the hooded man.
He decided to simply run fast enough to get past the watchers and bump into the man, uncovering the hood. Simple yet effective.
Alex did a quick stretch and then sprinted. He went past the 1st watcher, then the 2nd watcher, onto the 3rd and 4th, eventually passing everyone before they had time to react.
He was headed straight for the hooded man. The man suddenly bent on his knees, becoming a more vulnerable target, and started packing his camera.
‘It seems you’re doing well, Alex’
Those words shook Alex, and at the last moment, he jumped right above the man. But it wasn’t the words that surprised him. It was the voice.
‘Dr. Watson? Is that you?’
‘It’s been a while since we last saw each other.’
The man stood up and purposely lifted his hood to reveal himself to confirm Alex’s suspicion. It was really Dr. Watson.
‘I thought you died in the fire.’
‘Now, now, don’t go off killing me. I’m still pretty young, you know.’
He said it with his usual devilish smile. At that time, Alex noticed something he should have long before, all the men were carrying hidden guns.
Cautiously, he took a step back.
‘Don’t be afraid, Alex. These guns can’t possibly harm you. I didn’t create you to be this weak, but if you don’t want other people losing a limb or two, you will come with us quietly.’
A man appeared from the back and handcuffed Alex, who showed little resistance.
Dr. Watson had taken about 50 people in hostage without them even knowing. Alex knew he messed up big time as Jason watched from afar.
‘This is bad. I need to help Alex’
They took Alex and started walking.
--Jason, just give me a split-second window, and this will all be over.
‘Wait, Alex, why don’t you wear this first.’
Dr. Watson took a blindfold and covered Alex’s eyes.
‘You can never be too careful.’
Dr. Watson knew Alex could easily take down the men if given a chance. He created him.
‘I know this isn’t my place to say, but wouldn’t this attract attention?’
‘It would, but it won’t bother people much if they don’t think this is a threat.’
‘What?’

However, he pressed on, determined to find some sort of delicious food to consume. Life had other plans for him. He gets hit by a car, and after hearing strange words from an even stranger voice, he dies. However, minutes, hours, maybe even days later, he awakes, his senses of smell, sight, and hearing robbed of him. Author's Note: This is my first story on Royal Road, so it might not be the best. Although, I hope you enjoy! I'll probably write around 2000 words or more per chapter, but on average a bit more. If you're wondering, the cover art is drawn by me, just in case you thought I wasn't giving credit to the creator. This story might often times lean more into the comedy side of things, but stuff can still get pretty serious at times, especially in the later chapters. The story isn't super dark or anything, but character death is of course going to be a thing. Who? Well, you'll find out, eventually. Also, I'll upload chapters on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. I hope you enjoy reading this little hobby of mine!

Parental Controls
Reeve Williams always felt more at home in vivid virtual reality than in drab real reality, partly as an escape from the very real embarrassment of her technically inept parents, Walter and Wanda. When Reeve’s parents give her a new total-immersion virtual reality system for her birthday, Reeve reluctantly agrees to show them what it’s like…just for a few minutes. But a mistake only her technophobe father would make leaves Reeve facing the prospect of spending months in the greatly accelerated, fantastically complex, brutally unforgiving game world. With her parents. Posts will be every M/W/F. If I ever decide to try to turn Parental Controls into an ebook, I won't do so in such a way that I'd need to take down what I've posted to Royal Road. Thanks for reading!
