《Alpha Dylan》Chapter 42 | Tearful Truths

I had spent two days in my bed, being bombarded with gifts from my friends and family, including my father who insisted on visiting every few hours to ensure I was recovering well.
Dylan had hardly slept, and I didn't blame him. The small hospital chair placed beside my bed didn't look the most comfortable, and his tall stature meant he barely fit on it even when just sitting down.
His under eyes had darkened significantly over the past two days, and I felt guilty knowing that I was the reason he wasn't getting any sleep, his body clearly suffering.
I gazed up at my mate, planting a quick kiss on his lips as I pushed open the door to Matthew's hospital room, gulping nervously, scared for what I was going to see.
"The doctor said he awoke last night, and is recovering well, but if it all gets too much for you, let me know and I'll come and get you," spoke Dylan, giving my hand one final squeeze before making his way down the corridor towards the waiting room.
Sighing heavily, I made my way into the room, gently shutting the door behind me, squinting at the brightness of the L.E.D lights above, one of them flickering eerily.
Pulling open the hospital curtain, I slowly revealed a smiling Matthew, his pearly white teeth flashing at me as he shot me a quick wink.
"There she is," he chuckled, popping a final grape into his mouth, setting his tray of food down beside him.
"Matthew, are you okay?" I muttered, perching next to him, nodding as he waved my worries away, rolling his eyes.
"Please, Gia, I'm fine. I'm a fighter."
I furrowed my brows, shaking my head, ignoring the name slip up, knowing his brain must still be a bit foggy. "The doctors said you were in a coma, and your MRI showed signs of brain damage."
"Yeah, well, I feel fine. I'm feeling a little slow, but other than that, I'm great."
"That's good to hear. Have you tried walking or anything?"
Matthew shook his head, leaning back against his pillow, closing his eyes, a sigh passing his lips. "Nope, but I'm kind of living the life; being waited on hand and foot. I could get used to this."
I laughed, slapping his arm, rolling my eyes. I could tell that there was an awkward vibe in the air, and I suspected it was because of how my friend had followed Alpha Paul's orders to attack my own mate.
"I hope Dylan isn't being too hard or anything," I said, smiling.
Matthew gazed at me, cocking his head, chewing on his bottom lip, his face looking puzzled. "Who's Dylan again?"
I gulped, clearing my throat, attempting to not let my shock show on my face, recovering quickly. "My mate. He's been training you for a while, remember?"
Matthew nodded, and I could practically see his brain cogs turning as he sifted through his thoughts, but coming up blank, his mouth set in a firm line. "I'm sorry Gia, I don't remember."
I swallowed harshly, shaking my head at my friend, my stomach dropping as he used the name 'Gia' yet again.
"Um, Matthew, I'm Clara. Gia is our friend with blonde hair."
My friend furrowed his brows, humming to himself. "Ah, I don't think I know a Clara."

Tears threatened to spill over my eyes at Matthew's remark, causing me to stand up, taking an involuntary step back. My hands shook, my heart practically beating out of my chest as I started to hyperventilate.
A sudden knock on the door startled me, and I spun around to see Dylan standing behind the glass door, looking at me worriedly.
"Just one second," I said to my friend, holding up a finger, quickly making my way out of the room towards my mate.
"What's wrong? I can hear your heart beating a mile and minute. Are you okay?" worried Dylan as he scanned over my body for injuries, taking in my teary eyes.
I shook my head, wiping at my eyes. "It's Matthew. He doesn't remember who I am. He keeps calling me Gia, and he doesn't know who you are either."
Dylan looked taken aback, chewing on the inside of his cheek as he took in my words, placing his hand at the small of my back, leading me down the hall. "Okay, I'll let the doctors know and they can do some more testing. He'll be fine, don't worry."
"I know him and Gia had a thing, so I don't blame him for remembering her name and not mine, but he clearly can't place a face to the name. I'm scared, Dylan."
My mate pulled me to him, burying his face into my neck, soothing me as I cried a few more tears before pulling away, noticing my brother sitting in his wheelchair by the entrance, watching us pitifully, Amelia sneaking in after him, her eyes avoiding mine.
"Hi," I said awkwardly, knowing that Amelia and I had definitely got off on the wrong foot, but knowing I was her future Luna, I wanted to put it behind us.
"I'm glad you're okay, Clara," mumbled Amelia, tucking her dirty blonde hair behind her ear, Jared offering her a quick friendly smile.
"Thank you."
"I just wanted to apologise for my actions," she spoke, peering at her mate who nodded, encouraging her to continue. "I am young and have made a lot of mistakes, but I don't want everyone I come across to hate my anymore."
I sighed, smiling slightly as I released Dylan, making my way over to her, pulling her in for a hug, wrapping my arms around her tightly. She was shocked at first, but soon recovered, engulfing me equally as eagerly.
"I know you're my future Luna, and I want to show you respect, but even if you weren't going to be, I would still want to apologise to you. Jared has taught me things I never knew I needed to learn," she whispered into my shoulder.
I pulled away, wiping at a stray tear that leaked out of her eye. "I'm sorry if I was too harsh at you. I understood your point, I really did, but I was just blinded by the fact that my brother deserved happiness. All I want is for him to be happy."
Amelia nodded, smiling down at my brother as he squeezed her hand reassuringly. "I don't know what's going to happen between us. I don't want to rush into anything, but we are getting to know each other, and starting a clean slate."
I admired how mature Amelia was being, and I knew that meeting Jared had really changed her perspective on things, which I was grateful for.

"I heard our packs are merging," said my brother excitedly, causing me to laugh.
"Yeah, Dylan and I are just trying to figure out where everyone is going to live, but maybe your input could help?" I suggested, raising my eyebrows.
"I would love to visit somewhere new, but I also use this place as my comfort blanket, and I know I would miss it if I had to leave. Sorry if that doesn't help much," laughed Amelia, flashing me a smile.
"It seems you're just as torn as I am," I replied.
"I'm sure whatever decision you make, it'll be in everyone's best interest," reassured Jared, beaming up at me.
"Is Dad finally getting some rest?"
Jared nodded, rolling his eyes. "Yeah, I practically forced him into his room. I was tempted to even slip him some sleeping pills in his coffee this morning, but he eventually agreed to get a bit of rest."
I smiled, feeling grateful at how caring and compassionate my family was. My Father had done everything for us since my Mother had left, and thinking about her still triggered me, leaving me heart feeling hollow inside of me. However, I knew there was a part of me that would never fully let go of her, and I was okay with that, because she was family, and she had once been someone I had loved and looked up to. I never wanted to forget those precious memories.
I was brought out of my daydream by Dylan clearing his throat, causing me to turn to him, raising my eyebrows.
"I'm just going to speak with the doctor for a second. I'll be out in a minute and we can finally head back to mine."
I nodded, settling down on the chair next to Jared's wheelchair, pushing my messy hair out of my face, ignoring the aching feeling that was shooting throughout my entire body.
"Still sore?" asked Amelia, frowning at me as I nodded, sighing.
"Yeah, the doctor gave me some really strong pain medication though that I have to take every few hours," I said, sighing and clutching at my painful side. "Actually, what time is it?"
"Um, almost eight," spoke my brother, gazing down at his watch, causing me to gaze out of the hospital window, noticing how it was now a deep midnight blue outside, the few dim streetlights being the only source of light on the hill.
"Shit, I need to go and take some more. I'll be right back," I mumbled, peeling myself off the chair and steadily walking down the hall, trying to be as light on my feet as possible so as not to wake up any sleeping patients.
Reaching my room, I pushed the door open, grabbing my medication from the side table and swallowing a couple of them down with a sip of water, feeling instantly better knowing my pain was going to dissipate soon.
I exited the room, slowly shutting the door, turning to make my way back down the hall towards the waiting room, but I stopped at the sound of my mate's voice coming from a different room, his tone holding slight aggression.
"Check the ultrasound recording again!"
I furrowed my brows, holding my breath as I flattened my back against the wall, lacing my shaking hands together.
"I'm sorry Alpha, but we've checked it nine times now. There was no heartbeat when she was brought in. There is nothing we can do."
I inhale quickly, confusion overwhelming me as my heart rate started to quicken.
"I ordered you to check it again," Dylan growled through gritted teeth, his wolf clearly wanting to take full control.
"Yes Alpha," spoke the doctor lowly. "It's still the same as before. Unfortunately the baby couldn't survive the dramatic blood loss, I'm very sorry."
I heard a small sigh, and some rustling, and after a few seconds of silence, I heard glass break and my mate growl loudly, causing me to gasp aloud. I cursed to myself, covering my mouth with my hand, knowing Dylan had definitely heard me.
I quickly ran down the corridor, tears pouring down from my eyes as I sprinted straight past the waiting room, turning the corner and pushing a large white door open, praying that the room wasn't occupied.
I relaxed once I saw it was empty, and as slowly slid against the cold wall, I allowed all of my emotions to bubble up the surface, sobbing loudly.
I hugged my knees to my chest, burying my face into them, attempting to catch my breath between sobs.
I didn't bother looking up as I heard the door open, and felt the presence of my mate crouched down in front of me.
"Clara, baby, look at me," he whispered, his voice cracking.
"What were you talking about?" I asked, already knowing the answer, but needing the confirmation.
Dylan sighed, hooking his finger under my chin and tilting my head up so I was forced to look into his eyes. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but nothing came out.
"Was I pregnant?" I cried, watching as Dylan broke down in front of me, tears dribbling down his cheeks as he pulled me to his chest, rocking me back and forth.
"I'm so sorry," he repeated again and again, rubbing my back soothingly, shushing me every time my sobs got louder.
"Are they sure?" I asked, pulling away, watching as Dylan nodded, his jaw tensed. "How long have you known?"
"I was told when we brought you in after Dean saved you. The doctors said it was very early days."
"I have been awake two days and you didn't tell me?" I growled, recoiling back from Dylan, which caused him to sigh, running his hands through his dark hair.
"I wanted you to recover fully before telling you."
After hearing Dylan's words, I crumbled again, allowing the tears to fall as Dylan reached for me, dragging me onto his lap, rocking me softly, gently kissing the top of my head.
I cried for what felt like hours, until eventually, I had fallen asleep, allowing darkness to overcome me, putting a temporary end to my suffering.
