Almost at that split second, he immediately figured out that Chi Ying has very strong tie with that child. He felt that his heart was being tore to pieces and frozen and falling at the same time, all the way to the bottom of a pit. Gu YuanChen thought a man would step out of the car the next second but, no, that did not happen. He recalled that Chi Ying’s martial status was single when she signed the contract.

Chi Ying replied softly, “Mmm.”

“It is meant to be then,” said Gu YuanChen with a pause. “He looks a lot like you.”

Chi Ying was minorly surprised. Chi Cheng looked a lot more like Lu JingYan than herself.

She smiled at him politely. “Does he? I don’t hear that one very often. That being said, we are close relatives after all.”

Gu YuanChen narrowed his eyes and still complemented in a very gentlemanly way. “Both of you have beautiful eyes.”

“…… Thank you.”

A few minutes later, the ride stopped and Chi Cheng bounced over to her as he called out, “Mommy!”

Along with Chi Cheng’s passionate voice was Chi Ying’s embarrassment.

She felt her face flushed and, after a slight paused, said to Gu YuanChen, “Please don’t tell anyone else.”

“Okay,” replied Gu YuanChen in a low voice. His look changed not a bit.

He pulled out a few colorful candies from the pocket of his windbreaker, bent down, and handed them over to Chi Cheng.

Chi Cheng shook his hand and looked at him with alert in his eyes. “Both my teacher and my mommy said that I should not eat candies from a stranger. And, Uncle, these candies are pretty but they have a lot of artificial colorings. You shouldn’t have too much of them. They can make you sick.”

Chi Ying busted out laughing and went along with it. “ChengCheng, don’t get rude. This is Uncle Gu.”

Chi Cheng acknowledged docilely and said, “Oh, so he’s Mommy’s friend too.”

Then, lifting up his head and showing off his red lips and white teeth, he said in a loud and clear voice, “Hi, Uncle Gu—”

Gu YuanChen, avoiding the coldness that was forming inside of him, smiled and asked, “So your name is ChengCheng.”

Chi Cheng nodded. “Mmmhmm. My name is ChengCheng.”

That night, Zhao Wan couldn’t wait to ask Chi Ying out to a coffee shop to meet up. Under the threats and temptation, Chi Ying finally told her what happened five years ago.

Zhao Wan was very emotional but she tried her best to control herself and said in a low voice, “So, you and Lu JingYan had a one-night stand five years ago and had a cute little kid together but Lu JingYan didn’t know about it?”

Chi Ying nodded silently.

Zhao Wan asked eager, “Has Lu JingYan ever looked for you? Did he remember you?”

“He had some ideas but he didn’t know for certain.”

“Why do you say that?”

Chi Ying hesitated a little and told Zhao Wan what happened between herself and Lu JingYan starting from the banquet back in September, to their graduation play, to the scholarship, all the way up to the filming of The Green Sun.

Zhao Wan was shocked by all of it but mostly she was anxious for Chi Ying. “What is wrong with you? Lu JingYan likes you and you know it. The #1 most popular CEO in the country is pining for you, what else could you ask for?”

Lu JingYan might not necessarily like her in the romantic sense. It could also be that it was a form of relief for him to see that she was well during his illness.

A drowning person would want to hold onto even a straw or a duckweed.

Chi Ying looked played with the straw mindlessly. “But I am afraid to let him know about Chi Cheng.”

“Why not?”

“The Lu’s are a big family and it is unlikely that they’d accept Chi Cheng with open arms. If Chi Cheng comes to light, it’d put him in danger. I worry about his safety.”

“I don’t think you are thinking straight on this.” Zhao Wan sighed. “Lu JingYan likes you so, naturally, he’d protect the two of you.”
