《Forced Enemies》Chapter Twenty Five

I got out as quick as possible, not looking behind me as I got into my car, driving back to the house.
I wouldn't let the tears fall, I wouldn't be upset because of him.
But that kiss felt so good, so real
But our fight earlier on made me upset, enough to make me grab my things and head to the other guest bedroom.
What confused me was how he kissed me, after everything we fought about, even after we practically confessed we both hated each other.
I sighed into the pillow, feeling the warm tears start to slip down my cheeks.
I held in a breath when I heard the front door open, and my eyes darted to the door when I heard Kye walk down the hallway.
I let out a breath when he shut our bedroom door, and I turned over and faced the wall.
I no longer want to be here, I want to be as far away as possible.
Do I?
I shook my head, brushing off the thought.
I grabbed my pillow, hugging it tightly as I closed my eyes.
Tomorrow will come soon enough, and he'll be
gone.
✥ ✥ ✥
"Come on Aliyah," Claudia whined, grabbing my hand and pulling me forward.
"Aliyah sweetie, we have to do this," my mom said, watching as I got pulled into the foyer.
Earlier this morning, I was bombarded with my mom, Kye's mom and Claudia, all of them claiming to take me dress shopping.
I knew this was Kye's doing.
And when he came down the stairs, not even glancing at me or speaking at all, I knew exactly what he was up to.
He left through the front door, his mother also confused as he shut the door on all of us.

"Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed," Claudia murmured, still grabbing onto my hand and pulling me.
"Fine," I finally said, "I'll go."
I might as well, it was the only escape I had.
✥ ✥ ✥
"Look at this," Claudia gasped, "it's beautiful."
I rolled my eyes, holding the fabric she was showing me.
"It's hideous."
"You can't be fussy Aliyah, the weddings in three days," my mother said from the other side of the room, also checking out dresses.
"I'm not being picky, I just don't want something fancy," I said, disgustingly looking at the puffy dress in the corner.
"Everyone wants something fancy," Claudia said, putting a dress up to her body.
I scanned the room, every single dress too big, too showy or too glamorous.
But then my eyes snagged on one, hung up in the corner of the room, away from everything else.
I walked towards it, feeling its fabric and the stitched flowers.
"That's beautiful," I heard Kye's mom Lora whisper in my ear, a smile on her face as she looked at the dress.
"Don't tell me you like that," Claudia said from behind us, a disgusted look on her face.
"It's amazing!" I heard my mother gasp, going up and looking at the tag.
"It's on clearance," she winced, "oh well, we'll find a new one."
"No," I said quickly, "I want this one."
She looked over at Claudia, who shook her head.
"Okay, we'll take it," Lora said, grabbing the dress and handing it to me.
I smiled down at it, thanking her and going to the front desk, paying for the dress and taking the bag.
"When Kye sees you walk down the aisle in a couple days, he'll forget all his hatred," Lora said, and I chuckled.

"I think he hates me even more," I said, both of us sitting alone outside of the house.
"Why do you say that?" She asked.
"Well-" I trailed off.
"You kissed, didn't you?"
I widened my eyes in surprise, "yes, how did you know?"
"I can see it in your eyes," she smiled.
I sighed, looking down at my fingers.
"He's been a prick," I admitted, "I hate him so much, and the fact that he leaves me alone all day and expects me to stay makes me furious."
She took a deep breath and held my hand, her kind eyes looking at me strongly.
"He's been like that since he was born," she told me.
"He's tough, and with his father-" she looked down, closing her eyes briefly, "he's had a hard time."
I nodded in understanding, squeezing her hand tightly.
"I just don't know what to do," I whispered, watching as a bird flew onto the tree in front of us.
"I know," she said, "just give him time, he'll come around."
"I just want him to talk to me, actually understand that I want to go on missions, that I actually want to live a normal life."
She frowned, putting her other hand over top of mine.
"I don't think it's what you think," she started.
"What do you mean?"
"Kye doesn't want you getting hurt, he doesn't want you on missions."
"I've been doing missions my whole life, I don't understand."
"Kye cares more about you than you think," she told me, watching as my eyes widened.
I shook my head. "Kye hates me."
She smiled and backed away, taking her hands with her.
"Just give him a chance, that's all I ask," she said, standing up from her chair.
She gave me a hug and grabbed her purse, "good luck," she smiled, and opened the door, heading back inside to leave.
I took a deep breath and looked at the sky, closing my eyes and basking in the sun, trying to escape reality, and Kye.

The Simulacrum
"He who fights with harem tropes should see to it that he himself does not become a harem protagonist. And if you gaze for long into a narrative, the narrative gazes also into you." --- Friedrich Nietzsche (probably?) How would you react if one day you woke up inside an environment running on tropes and clichés? For allegedly average high-schooler Leonard Dunning, this question became quite relevant when one day he woke up in a pristine city on a strange island in the middle of the Atlantic, without any memories, surrounded by classmates who are barely more than characterless placeholders, and with a classic indecisive harem protagonist and his impossibly beautiful love interests for friends. That would be hard to deal with already, yet his investigation into the tropes governing the world, trying to avoid harem shenanigans, and his odd blend of outside-context knowledge, unique abilities, and a penchant for causing trouble wherever he goes ends up dragging him into the center of the action anyway. Disclaimer: This is a tongue-in-cheek, slice of life romantic comedy, with occasional sprinkles of combat and mystery to spice things up. Please do not expect a straight up deconstruction beyond some in-universe meta-commentary by the characters.
