《Arranged Love (Currently Being Edited)》Chapter 16 - Arriving on the Island

She took a deep breath and let it out before reclining her chair back and closing her eyes. Pretty soon she was asleep.
"Eva wake up. We're here," Paulo said, gently shaking her shoulder. She opened her eyes and tried to focus as she sat up groggily, looking around, still half out of it.
"We're here?" she asked in a gravelly voice, blinking.
"Yes we're here. It's time to go," he said standing up and heading towards the plane door that had already been opened. She couldn't believe that she had slept through the landing. She stood up and followed him, going down the steps of the plane and she saw Paulo talking to a man in front of a black jeep with very large floodlights and a deer guard attached to the front.
"I'll take you in my Jeep over to where the boat is docked. We'll take the boat out to the island and I'll drop you off and then I'll come back at the end of the week to collect you."
"Ok sounds good," Paulo said shaking his hand and the man loaded their luggage into the back. Paulo looked over at Eva, motioning for her to get in the Jeep and she could still feel anger and an awkward tension between them.
When she glared at him and didn't move he just turned and climbed into the front seat of the Jeep without a word and she walked around and climbed into the backseat from the driver's side. As they drove down the long bumpy path with dust kicking up behind them Paulo talked to the driver the whole way while she sat in the back staring out at the jungle as they passed by. She finally saw a glimpse of the blue ocean with the light of the sun sparkling off of it and the Jeep came to a stop in front of a dock that had a small boat.
They boarded the boat and Paulo sat on a long white plastic bench across from her and slipped on his sunglasses, leaning back and stretching his legs out, spreading his arms wide on the back of the bench.
"So are you two brother and sister?" the boat captain asked as he untied the boat from the dock
Paulo laughed and said, "No, we just got married yesterday."
The middle aged man got a shocked look on his face and his eyes widened.
"I would've never guessed! You two don't act like any newlyweds I've ever met. They normally can't keep their hands off each other," he said laughing.
"Well it was an arranged marriage. We're practically strangers," he said, without even looking at her.
"Ahhh. That explains it," the Captain nodded with a laugh and said, "That makes sense now. Man, I've heard of arranged marriages but I didn't know anyone actually still did that in this day and age. Maybe a week stranded on this island alone together is just what you two need to fall in love!" he said optimistically.

"I highly doubt it," Eva grumbled under her breath. She couldn't even imagine falling in love with that asshole.
When they finally got to the island the captain helped them bring their luggage onto the dock and he looked at them and said, "You've got the whole island to yourselves all week. The refrigerator is fully stocked with the food and drinks you requested. There's no cell service or internet but there is an emergency intercom system in case you should have a medical emergency. The house is right up over that hill down the trail. There's no streaming services but you'll find a DVD player and some DVD's in the hutch in the living room if you feel like watching a movie. There's also surfboards and boogie boards in the pool house. Any questions before I head out?" he asked.
They both shook their heads.
"Well then, good luck," he said, looking back and forth between them letting out a lighthearted laugh and saying, "and Happy Honeymoon!" before turning around and hopping back on the boat, driving away with a wave and a huge smile. Pretty soon he was gone in the distance, leaving her and Paulo all alone.
Eva turned around in a circle, shielding her eyes from the bright sun as she looked around at the little island with white sandy beaches, clear turquoise ocean water and palm trees with coconuts and island flowers. This place really was beautiful. It looked like an absolute paradise and normally being here would be like heaven but the thought of being trapped here alone with him all week seemed more like hell.
Paulo bent down and picked up both their suitcases and started carrying them up the trail towards the house. They walked up the trail and came up over a small hill and there it was. A little bungalow style house that looked very modern, built from large solid planks of wood with tall rectangular open glass windows and long white curtains blowing in the breeze. It was surrounded by palm trees and it had a large in-ground pool beside it and she saw an outdoor grill and a fire pit. Behind it she noticed it was really close to the beach too.
"Wow. This place is really nice," Eva said in awe.
"I'm sure my Mom will be glad you approve," Paulo grumbled as he led the way into the house, opening the door to reveal a very cozy modern living space with a fluffy, white couch and chairs with turquoise pillows surrounding a large wooden glass-top coffee table. There was a spinning fan on a long rod coming down from the ceiling with blades shaped like large palm leaves. It was an open-concept room with the kitchen visible from the living room. The kitchen had white-washed wood cabinets with stainless steel appliances, a white tile floor and a grey slate stone countertop and a very large stainless steel sink.

Paulo walked into the other room and she followed behind to see that it was a bedroom with a canopy bed in the middle of the room with long white see-through curtains draped over the sides, blowing in the warm island breeze coming in through the open windows. There was another fan in this room with blades the shape of palm leaves and there was a desk and a small sitting area with white wicker table and chairs. There were two french doors that opened to a balcony with a view of the ocean and the sun was just now starting to set, splashing bright colors across the sky.
Eva walked out onto the balcony and admired the beautiful sunset and a couple minutes later Paulo walked up beside her and didn't say a word, just taking in the view in silence.
She thought about saying something but instead she just stood there and let out an exhale.
They both stood there in silence, watching as the sun slowly went down and finally dipped below the horizon.
"I'm hungry," he finally said, breaking the silence.
"I'm starving," she said, slipping her hands into the pockets of her dress and looking down at the sandy beach.
He walked over to the grill beside them on the patio and started filling it with coals and spraying it with lighter fluid before striking a match and throwing it in.
She was surprised that he actually appeared to know what he was doing. "Do you cook?" she asked, scrunching her eyebrows at him.
"In Spain food is a big part of our culture and any time we have company over we make large elaborate meals to celebrate. Cooking is something I've always been good at."
She followed him into the kitchen and was surprised to see how full the refrigerator was when he opened it.
He took out two filet mignon steaks and some large prawns. She watched as he smashed some garlic cloves and cut up some fresh rosemary and rubbed them into some butter, making a paste and then he spread it across the steaks. He covered the prawns with butter and garlic and sprinkled them with some smoked paprika as well before putting them on a long skewer and taking them out to the grill.
He seemed to know what he was doing. As he set the skewers and steaks onto the hot grill they made a sizzling noise. She stood there watching him cook with a really awkward silence between them and she looked around for anything she could do.
While he was busy cooking the steak and prawns out on the grill she went inside and got out two plates and silverware and set the table and poured two glasses of red wine.
As soon as she opened the patio door again, the delicious smells coming from the grill hit her and she suddenly realized how hungry she was. There was Paulo clutching a large pair of tongs, taking the steaks and prawn skewers off of the grill and closing the lid. She walked over next to him and breathed in the amazing smell.
"Sorry. I forgot to tell you, but I'm actually a vegetarian."
His eyes widened and his jaw dropped as he looked over at her in disbelief. Seeing the look of shock on his face, made it too hard to hold in her laughter.
"I'm just messing with you," she laughed.
He rolled his eyes and ran a hand through his hair, shaking his head but she caught the slightest glimpse of a smile but he didn't say anything.
The food smelled amazing and he grabbed the platter of steak and prawns and headed back into the house and she followed. He looked surprised to see the table already set.
She took a seat as he took the tongs and laid a steak and a few prawns on each plate before sitting down across from her. He put a small scoop of garlic butter onto both steaks and it instantly started melting into it.
She cut into the steak and it was cooked to a perfect medium rare on the inside and was seared dark and crispy on the outside, just how she liked it. She took a bite and closed her eyes and savored the delicious flavor. It was honestly the best steak she had ever tasted in her life.
He took a sip of his wine and she did the same and they looked across the table at each other. She wondered if this whole week was going to be this awkward and silent. If so it was going to be a really long week.
She looked across the table into his hazel eyes and handsome face and took a deep breath in and let it out, looking at the wine that was swirling in her glass.
"Thank you for making dinner," she said quietly, taking her napkin and smoothing it onto her lap for a distraction, anything to break the awkward tension between them.
He just nodded and continued to eat his food.
