《Sweet Disaster》10| Cooking

I climbed into the elevator and pressed the button to my floor before leaning against the wall. The doors opened a while later and I walked out to my apartment, ringing the bell.
Caleb answered the door with a pack of chips in his hand. "Come on in," he smirked, acting like I was a guest.
"Fuck you," I laughed, unleashing Whiskey who ran straight to the couch and jumped on, lying down.
Caleb looked at me and then looked at Whiskey and then back at me. "Did you take him on a walk or a run?"
"We walked there and ran back," I shrugged, grabbing a water bottle for myself and filling up Whiskey's bowl with fresh water. He jumped off and ran to the bowl, drinking water while I threw my shirt off. "I'm going to shower. Find something to do until then," I sighed, putting the bottle back in the fridge after drinking some.
"Let's make brownies, I want some," he mumbled, opening cabinets and looking for the mix.
"You burnt them last time."
"You want something to do, don't you? So you make the brownies. I'll eat them. Fifty-fifty," he smirked.
I rolled my eyes and went into my room and grabbed joggers before going into the bathroom and hopping in the shower. I rinsed the shampoo out of my hair, staring at the same spot on the tiled wall.
Landon said he would come back today. I hope he doesn't. I hope he never speaks to Indigo again, I hope she never has to deal with him again, hell, I hope I never have to deal with him again. But better me than her. We just have to make sure we get our story right if anyone asks us, whether that be Landon, Caleb, Chloe, or anyone else.
I turned the water off and grabbed the towel, quickly drying myself off. I pulled my sweatpants on and then ruffled my hair with a smaller towel before tossing it in the hamper. I walked back out without pulling a shirt on.
"Are you making the brownies?" he asked, sitting on the couch while Whiskey slept on his leg.
"I'm starving, I don't have time to make them. Let me eat something else first," I mumbled, grabbing a bowl, yogurt, some strawberries, banana, and blueberries. I sat on the couch beside Caleb while eating while we looked for something to watch.
"Watch Breaking Bad, I keep telling you."

I finished my food and then turned to him. "Go ahead. I'll make brownies for you, my little baby." I scoffed, standing up and first giving Whiskey his food. Then I took out the brownie mix and started working on those. While I was doing that, Caleb strolled into the kitchen and sat on the barstool.
"Reece."
"What?"
"What's cooking?"
"Nothing. Brownies are baking," I replied, licking the chocolate off my finger.
"No, I mean what's cooking between you and Indie?"
I tried not to react and kept working on the brownies. "Nothing, what are you talking about?"
"Then why was she here?"
"She wasn't here. She just came here looking for Landon."
"Did she now?"
"Yeah. You know what he did, right?"
"Yeah. And I know that if she was ignoring him like she said she was, she wouldn't be looking for him, she'd let him come to her. And she wouldn't be here for Landon. She might be here for you."
I turned to look at him after turning the oven on to preheat. "Why would she be here for me? Do you have any idea how much we want to kill each other when we're alone?"
"I understand why she wants to kill you, you're the one always annoying her. But why do you want to kill her?"
I shrugged, "I just do. She's clingy."
"Not to you."
"She was clingy with Landon."
"Since when do you side with him?"
"I'm not siding with him," I huffed, rolling my eyes. "I'm just saying, I've seen how annoying she can be. I make it a point to annoy her the way she annoys some people."
"But she doesn't annoy you," he laughed.
"Is there a point to this conversation?" I asked, turning back around and breaking up the chocolate, adding it to the bowl.
"The point is, my dear brother." We're not brothers by blood. But we're close. "She was here. I don't know if that was just this morning or last night. But she was here and you have scratches on your back."
I couldn't play it off this time. I froze, I stopped all movement.
"Didn't you check in the mirror?" he chuckled.
"I don't look at my back," I mumbled.
"So it's true! I got it right! You had sex with Indie!"
I turned to look at him again. I shook my head.

He nodded.
I shook my head harder.
And he nodded again.
"Caleb!"
"I won't tell anyone, relax. Did you want it or her?"
"I did."
Why did I say that?
"You did?" he asked, not seeming convinced at all.
I nodded. "I wanted it. I asked her."
"Then why do you act like you hate her?"
"Because she was Landon's girlfriend, obviously," I scoffed, shrugging and turning back around. I closed my eyes, letting out a huff. "I couldn't flirt with her then. I've only known her since she became Landon's girlfriend. I mean, think about it."
What am I saying?
"Obviously, if I want to screw a girl but she's got a boyfriend and I have to see her with that guy every single day. As if I don't already hate the guy enough. Wouldn't you start to get pissed off at her too?"
He fell silent and I knew that meant he was thinking. And I almost had him believing my lie. "Reece, do you think I'm stupid?"
I sighed, my shoulders slumping.
"She either wanted to sleep with you because as far as she knows, you're Landon's best friend. Or you want to sleep with her because she's Landon's ex-girlfriend. Which one is it?"
"I told you, I did. I wanted to sleep with her." I turned to look at him as the timer on the oven went off. I put the tray inside and then closed it up, turning to him. "I wanted to sleep with her."
"Well, you fucking genius. If she didn't want it too, she wouldn't have slept with you. Let's just conclude at this, you wanted to sleep with each other. That's it. This is too confusing for me. So, just once? Last night?"
I nodded.
He narrowed his eyes at me. How does a nod make him think I'm lying? For fuck's sake. "Nah," he shook his head. "How many?"
"Twice."
"When?"
"The night he cheated on her. And then last night."
"Two nights? In a row! You like her, you fucker."
"No, I don't," I groaned.
"You like her body?" he asked.
"Yes," I nodded.
"Fine. Whatever you say. So, are you both done now?"
"She's coming over tonight," I said, scratching the back of my neck.
His eyes widened and he stared at me. "Wait, wait, wait. Is it a thing now? Are you both like... friends with benefits or some shit?"
"We're not friends."
He huffed, rolling his eyes. "Enemies with benefits then? Is that what it is?"
I shrugged, "Kind of."
"For how long?"
"I don't fucking know, stop interrogating me. This isn't an interview. Take out the brownies when the timer goes off." I tossed the baking gloves at him and then went to my room. I went into the bathroom, trying to look at my back.
There wasn't a lot and they weren't too dark either. They were very faint, red lines going up up and down. I went to my room and grabbed my phone, dialing her number quickly.
She answered while laughing. "Hello?"
"Where are you?"
"We're going to the mall, what is it?"
I opened my mouth to ask her what the fuck she was thinking when she was leaving marks on my body but then stopped myself. I'll just get her back tonight. "Never mind. I'll tell you tonight."
"Okay, bye." She hung up before I could even say bye.
I went back out, pulling a shirt on, this time.
"You can't hide what I already saw, buddy," he taunted.
I grabbed a cushion from the couch and flung it at him. I lay down on the couch, looking for something to watch. Whiskey lifted his head, looking at me. I patted my stomach and he lay down on me.
When the oven timer went off, Caleb took out the tray and brought it to the coffee table here.
I put Whiskey on the floor so he wouldn't jump up and eat any chocolate and then we let them cool down a bit before eating.
"Watch Breaking Bad, you fuck!" Caleb exclaimed through gritted teeth when it had still been so long and we couldn't settle on what to watch.
"Oh my god, okay!" I huffed, clicking play. I gave up halfway through and started scrolling through my phone. I was on Instagram when a picture of Indigo and Chloe popped up.
They were definitely at the mall. They both had a few shopping bags in their hands and were grinning at the camera. Someone definitely took this for them or they set the phone somewhere and took them on their own. There were a few like that, some with them sipping drinks, laughing, looking, and saying something to each other while pointing at something.
"What are you smiling at?"
I didn't look away from the screen. "Huh?"
"What are you grinning at?" Caleb snatched the phone out of my hand and I groaned into my palms, grabbing another brownie.
I looked at him.
"I just won't say anything. I'll let you figure this one out. But I can't help it. Looking at your girl, are you?" he sang, teasing me.
I kicked him and he winced, grabbing another brownie as well. "She's not my girl."

It follows his struggles with self-worth, and his interpersonal relationships between his family, friends, coworkers and partners. This novella is in it's first draft so if it's a bit rough around the edges that's why. I just want to get some feedback on it as well as what's working. Each chapter can be very stylistically different from each other as a means of separating the different months that each chapter takes place to better put the reader into the headspace of Arthur.
