《Submission》Chapter 21

Friday ticked by slowly as Lorelei was excited to see Jesse. Her mind was distracted by the thoughts of what he may do to her body. She was unsure if she was going to love it or hate it, but she knew she had to try. She was up for new experiences when she matched with Jesse's profile. That's why she messaged him back.
Lorelei let out a shaky breath before knocking on Jesse's door. She shifted her weight from foot-to-foot as she waited.
Jesse opened the door. His dark hair was wet, and Lorelei remembered him telling her that he worked today. She looked at his hand to see his fingernails were restrained black. He smiled and the one dimple formed in his cheek.
"Hey, Cutie," he said.
He reached forward and wrapped his arm around her waist bringing her to his chest. He kissed her. Lorelei brought her hands up and ran her fingers through his damp hair. He smiled against her lips and pulled her into his apartment.
Lorelei broke the kiss and looked around Jesse's apartment. It was clean and tidy like usual. She was embarrassed that he always saw her place in such a mess.
Jesse laced his fingers through Lorelei's and guided her over to the couch. She sat down and saw that he already had two glasses of water on the coffee table in front of them. Jesse kept his hand on Lorelei's thigh.
"How have you been?" he asked.
Lorelei knew the real question he was asking: how did she feel after their breakfast at the diner? It had been a few days since they had seen each other, but they had shared quite a few texts. None of their messages mentioned anything about pain.
Lorelei cleared her throat so that her voice would not come out as a squeak.
"I've been okay," she said.

"Good." Jesse tightened his grip on her thigh. "I've been thinking about you all day."
"You have?" she asked, feeling the heat rush up to her cheeks.
"I have. It was pretty distracting."
Lorelei smiled. She leaned in to kiss him, but her cellphone started to ring. She sighed before leaning back and slipping the phone out of the pocket of her sweater. A number she did not recognize flashed across the screen. Lorelei rolled her eyes before answering it. She did not want to talk to Matthew again. She needed him out of her life so that he can just become a bad memory.
"Listen here, dickhead," she said. "Leave me the hell alone. I don't want to talk to you."
Jesse raised his brows and his jaw was hanging open when he heard Lorelei speak.
"Woah," Jody said. "Do you always answer the phone that way?"
Lorelei's eyes went wide before she let out a nervous laugh. She covered her mouth with her hand.
"Hi, Jody," she said.
Jesse's mouth snapped shut and he shook his head. He reached out for the phone, but Lorelei slapped his hand away. He went to grab the phone again. Lorelei jumped off the couch and took a step back.
"How did you get my number?" Lorelei asked.
"I got it off of Jesse," Jody said.
"Jesse gave you my phone number?"
Jesse's eyes were wide. She watched him curl his fingers into the arm of the couch. He was restraining himself from trying to rip the phone out of Lorelei's grasp again.
"Not exactly," she said. "I got it out of his phone while he was in the bathroom."
How'd she get into his phone? Lorelei thought.
She had seen Jesse unlock his phone before. He required a password to get into his phone. How would Jody know the password to his phone? Were they really that close of friends?

"What does she want?" Jesse asked.
"Are you with him?" Jody asked. "I can already hear he's mad."
"I am at his place," Lorelei said.
"Okay," Jody said. "Well, I am calling because my friends and I are having brunch for my birthday and I would love it if you came."
"You want me to come along?" Lorelei asked.
Jesse jumped off of the couch. He grabbed Lorelei's arm and ripped the phone out of her hand. Lorelei gasped as he held the phone up to his ear.
"She's not going," Jesse said.
Lorelei furrowed her brows. She thought that Jesse must be embarrassed by her because he did not want her to be around his friends. Worse than that, she did not like how he was making decisions for her. She had fun with Jody, and she wanted to see her again.
Lorelei stepped on Jesse's foot as hard as she could. Jesse cried out in pain, and she took advantage of his distraction and pulled the phone out of his hand. She took a couple steps back.
"I would love to go," Lorelei said.
"Great!" Jody said. "It's Sunday at eleven. I'll text you the details."
"Perfect, I'll see you then."
Lorelei hung up the phone and scowled at Jesse. He ran his fingers through his hair before sitting back down on the couch. He ran his hand along his jaw. His gaze was no longer on Lorelei.
"Do I really embarrass you so much?" Lorelei asked.
"It's not you I'm worried about," he said. "I worry about Jody. You shouldn't hang out with her."
"How can you say that?" she asked. "She's your friend."
"She's a bad influence. Remember how drunk you got at The Alibi?"
"This is brunch. I'm not going to get wasted."
He let out a deep breath before shaking his head.
"I don't think it's a good idea," he said.
"You don't get to tell me what to do," she said.
Jesse closed his eyes for a moment before patting the spot on the couch next to him.
"Let's not let this ruin our night," he said.
Lorelei sat next to Jesse. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her to kiss her cheek.
"Are you mad at me?" he asked. "I am trying to protect you."
"You promise you're not embarrassed by me?" she asked.
"Why would I be embarrassed by you? Jody likes you. She wouldn't stop talking about you the other night. Plus, she just invited you to her birthday."
Lorelei nodded. She knew that he had a point. Jody wouldn't have gone out of her way to invite Lorelei if she did not like her. She just wondered why Jesse was so adamant that she not go, but she would not allow him to tell her she could not go to the brunch. Matthew used to always dictate when she could spend time with her friends.
"I'm not mad," she said. "I just don't like being told what to do."
"I promise I'll keep the orders to the bedroom," Jesse said with a wink.
Lorelei giggled. Jesse grabbed her hips and pulled her onto his lap so that she was straddling him. She cupped his face in her hands. His fingers slipped under her shirt and dragged up and down her spine. Goosebumps broke out across her skin.
"Is it time for me to start giving you some orders?" he asked.
"I think so," she said.
"Get on your knees."

The Ruined Monks of Rothfield Monastery
Erin is the youngest member of the dark monks; a supernatural brotherhood whose ultimate mission is to improve the dire circumstances of poor, war-torn villages using powers unique to each member. Or so he was led to believe. Erin, like his brothers, does not age, and that is, unfortunately, the only trait he shares with them. He cannot charm or compel like Woodrow, he cannot cast illusions like Knox, he was not swift like Swithin, not powerful like Blake. He was barely an assistant to his dear brother Wilbur, with his herbology and alchemy. He was told to lie low and make himself scarce. That is what he did. The dark monks temporarily reside in abandoned monasteries scattered around the country, feeding the poor and healing the sick, nurturing the monastic lands until it was fertile enough to raise crops and rear animals. As the years passed, they would leave these reformed, repopulated, self-sustaining monasteries and venture froth to help the next settlement. Yet, after years of toiling and quiet servitude, Erin notices that people and the country itself are declining. The villagers look gaunt, the once-lush soil now barren and cracked. He begins to feel disheartened, thinking that their mission is proving futile. Still, their leader Blake is steadfast and charges onward, and lately has his eyes set on a certain monastery in a thick, thorned forest that seems to diminish, even nullify their powers. A thick forest that Erin somehow has a connection to. A thorned glade where an ethereal voice calls his name with one simple request along with a promise:Heal the land, child. Heal the land and I promise to give you sanctuary so long as you stay. I promise to nurture you as you nurture me. As Erin cultivates the land, the land, in turn, gifts all its caretakers with new, enhanced skillsets on top of their unique powers -- skills of protection, healing, and magic. Magic. Erin had long wished to see the world fill with it again. The people, regardless of common or noble blood, still believe that magic will enter this world again. Magic to bless the king like it did the Saints. Magic to dispel the miasma befouling the world. Magic to bring back the fae folk and their many forms. It is up to Erin to forge the many paths leading to a bright future; to build a prosperous paradise that welcomes all races and bloodlines, by mastering the rewards gained through agriculture, horticulture, and animal husbandry, smithing, crafting, and fishing. Erin may also find a lifelong friendship and romance with his neighbor, Claude, if he decides to pursue him, and may even join him in the military campaign outside the monastery. The darkness still lurks outside, after all, and the mastery of his skills, along with a few good friends, may finally be enough to turn the tide in their favor. Most of all, Erin wants to keep the vow he set for himself: to protect everyone and everything he loves until his dying breath.

The Mischievous Mrs. Maxfield
***The wrong girl is sometimes The Right One.*** Charlotte Samuels thought she'd be stuck waiting tables at Marlow's until all her debts are paid off-in about ten thousand years or so. She definitely didn't expect a marriage proposal from the arrogant Brandon Maxfield who was blackmailed by his father to make her his wife if he didn't want his least favorite cousin to run Maxfield Industries. Charlotte's instinct was to say HELL NO! but she's stumped by a few obstacles: 1.) His old man Martin Maxfield is dear to her heart and has been recently deteriorating in health. 2.) She gets a million dollars if she stays married to Brandon for a year. 3.) She would rather like the opportunity to teach the attractive but awfully rude man a few lessons he didn't think he needed from a 'teenage gold-digger' which was his term of endearment for her on their first date-er, business meeting. So what's a girl got to do, right? Sure, she's young and a little rough around the edges but there's something her would-be husband didn't know about her yet-she's nothing like he ever expected. Thrust into the glitzy world a standard-issue Mrs. Maxfield would fit perfectly and rule with impeccable social grace, Charlotte will either have to force herself into the mold or break free of it, risking what little she has left for everything that she can gain.*** Copyright © 2014 by Nina Tippett.
