《Kings of Hawkings [bxb]》Chapter 51

Jonas watched a dozen of young men come into view of the courtyard, Lukas in the front and all with bats. Lukas had a menacing grin on his face that unnerved Jonas. He had been best friends with Lukas for years, but this was the first time he saw him look so... unhinged. Was he always like this? Was he so enamored by the friendly disguise that he completely overlooked this psychotic aspect of his personality.
Jonas shook his head. No, Lukas hid this side of himself too well. And that was what truly frightened Jonas.
The boys made it to the courtyard and found the five on the ground, groaning in pain.
"Careful... tree..." One said weakly and the boys all looked up at the tree where Jonas was waiting.
Jonas checked his phone and saw that Jaiden messaged him to let him know that everything was live streaming now on the Kings profile. Time to start the show.
Jonas jumped down from the tree and ran his fingers through his hair. The boys all backed away a little, and pulled their bats back.
Jonas nodded towards them. "Good to see you all again."
They faltered. Was that sarcasm?
Jonas laughed at their baffled expressions. "We were all friends, once. You can't blame me for being a little nostalgic." His attention turned towards Lukas and smiled lightly. "You said this was a game of hide and seek. I guess you found me."
Lukas cackled. "And I told you that if we found you, we will make you hurt."
"You didn't give me much of a choice but to be found." Jonas said coldly. "I wanted no part of your games or this school. You should have left me and those I care about alone."
"How would that be any fun for me?" Lukas shrugged.
Jonas shook his head and his should slumped. "I don't give a fuck about what's fun for you. You have already turned everyone against me, isolated me and attacked me. I left, Lukas. Despite everything you did to me, I walked away. Why do you keep antagonizing me?"
"I told you, I like to see people break. I like the hopelessness. I like seeing their happiness turn to despair. I truly enjoyed watching you turn feral. But someone tamed you, so now I have to start from scratch." Lukas sneered.
Jonas shook his head. "You were my best friend."
"Friend? You were just a connection that outlived it's usefulness. And now, you're not even a Spencer. You're just a little abandoned Hawkings boy." Lukas said cold look in his eyes.
Jonas sighed. "You all called me a wolf, but you're the real monster, Lukas. How can you disregard people so easily? How can you treat them as entertainment? Do you have no empathy?"
"I never expected you to try and talk to me about bullshit morals."
"I'm not. I'm just baffled by you. And perhaps by this school. You have harmed so many people, but the school just looks the other direction."
Lukas laughed. "You think the faculty here has any control? What makes you think an insignificant school has any authority? Money has power. Your position in society gives you control, and I sit on the top of the pyramid."

Jonas scoffed. "You sit on nothing but an illusion of grandeur."
Lukas flinched with rage when his position was mocked by someone he viewed a low as a beast. Grandeur? He control everyone here. Jonas was the outlier. He was always the outlier.
"I just wanted to forget the bullshit from last year. I wanted to enjoy my life as a Senior, with my friends and my boyfriend. But you just couldn't stop. You instigated a pointless rivalry with my new school. You tried to kidnap innocent people and torment them in the name of a hunt. You hung the corpses of animals in our school's courtyard. You terrorized my peers. You shut down the power to our dorms. You almost had my little brother killed by that bastard of a father. You kidnapped Emilia and Lucy... You fucking stabbed Hugh." Jonas recounted the things St. Vincent's had put them through, his voice turning deeper and heavier with each point.
When he mentioned Hugh, the fury seeped out, causing the boys to involuntarily shudder and step away.
The movement caught Jonas' eye and he looked around at the other boys with a cold glare. "I only have business with Lukas. I recommend you help your friends on the ground and leave."
They looked at each other with a questioning gaze, but Lukas snorted. "Don't even think about it. You're staying here. You're going to beat this bastard with those bats in your hands, or I will ruin your future."
Jonas laughed. "You already have. You have ingrained in them that this behavior will be tolerated." He looked at the boys who were hesitating. "But I guess I'll just show you all the error of your ways."
Several of the boys dropped their bats. One was hesitant, but took a deep breath and ran to the boys groaning on the ground. Because of his movement, a few others dropped their bats and checked on the injured boys.
"What the hell do you think you're doing." Lukas roared at them, his eyes shook with anger.
The first boy who stepped forward glared at Lukas. "I'm not ok with this, Lukas. I'm not some thug who is comfortable with beating someone with a bat, or kidnapping people. I just want to do well in school and go to college."
Lukas snarled. "I will deal with you later." He then picked up one of the fallen bats.
Jonas watched the others cautiously. With Lukas, there were still eight people. He took a deep breath. He did it before, he can do it again. "Actually going to meet me head on? I'm surprised. I thought you would attack from behind again." He rubbed the scar on the back of his head.
Lukas glared at him. "Go get the wolf bastard." He order his posse.
They ran forward with their bats. Jonas took up his fighting stance and took action. He rushed towards the faster person and ducked under the bat and then shift his weight on his feet, launching himself upwards with a massive uppercut. The boy's head snapped backwards and his feet lifted a little off the ground before he fell onto his back.

Seven left.
He pivoted, blocked a bat with his arm and grunted with the pain that shot up to his shoulder. His free hand pulled back and punched the attacker. He stumbled back and Jonas followed with another punch, making him stiffen and fall to the ground.
Six left.
He felt a horrible pain shoot up his side and back when a bat collided with him. He heard something inside of him crack, and knew that his ribs took the brunt of the hit. His clenched his teeth through the pain and spun with a roundhouse kick, his foot connected with the shoulder of anther boy. The boy cried out and stumbled backwards. The boy found his footing and attacked again, but Jonas shifted his feet and launched into a flying knee strike. With both of their forward movement, the knee landed heavily on the boy's chest and he crumpled to the ground.
Five left.
His breathing was heavy and the pain was coursing through his body. He felt one arm was completely numb from the multiple hits from the bat, and each breath pained him because of the cracked ribs. However, he couldn't be sluggish. His eyes focused on two opponents in front of him.
"Jo! Duck!"
Jonas didn't question it because of the familiar voice. Hugh had made it. He ducked low and saw a knife arch over his head. He turned quickly and saw the battered Ryan from before with a violent look in his eyes.
Jonas swiped with his legs, dropping Ryan to the ground. Ryan fell on his back and the knife flew out of his hand and skidded across the ground. He breath a sigh of relief when he saw the knife disappear. He quickly jumped on top of him and pounded his fists into his face until Ryan was too dazed to try and block. It took all of his strength to not continue beating Ryan for what he pulled on Hugh, but he had to focus on the group surrounding him.
Ryan was a new addition, so back to five left. Right?
Jonas tried to calm his breathing. With the double beating of Ryan and for multiple groups who have appeared, he felt like he had gone five rounds in the UFC ring, but they were asking him to do another ten. He groaned a little when he saw three people rush towards him. He put his guard up, but his left arm falling a little low because of the pain.
He was about to rush forward, but three figures ran past him from behind and started to swing their fists recklessly, bringing the three assailants down. Jonas smiled fondly at the three Kings who rushed to aid him. His eyes glanced around frantically and saw the last St. Vincent's boy standing still. He dropped the bat and held his hands up in the air to give up.
Jonas ignored him and panicked when he didn't see the person he was looking for, but his eyes finally landed on a stunning figure extending his arm in a graceful punch. His fist landed harshly on Lukas' face. Jonas smiled and watched as he hit Lukas a couple more times until he fell to the ground.
"Hugh." He called out.
Hugh turned towards him and his eyes widened as he noticed that Jonas wobbled a little. He ignored Lukas and ran towards Jonas, pulling him into his arms. "Jo, why did you come alone?"
"Why aren't you in the hospital?" Jonas asked with a strained laugh. His ribs were killing him at this point. He planted a light kiss on Hugh's neck. "Thank god you're ok, Hugh."
Hugh laughed. "You think a little knife could take me out?"
Jonas laughed as well, but the laugh died in his throat as he noticed Lukas was right behind Hugh with something glinting in his hands. Out of instinct, Jonas spun Hugh, placing himself in between Hugh and Lukas.
Jonas felt a pain shoot through his back. He gasped a little, and heard a couple of sickening thuds that caused his back to burn even more.
"I will kill you!" Lukas cried out. "If you won't break, then you won't breathe!"
Hugh had wide eyes and tried to pull Jonas away, but he refused to budge, fearful that Hugh would get hurt further. "Jo! STOP! Jo!"
The other Kings noticed the situation and rushed towards Lukas and tackled him. Sam grabbed the arm with the knife and pulled it back until he hard the crack of a broken bone. Lukas scream out in pain. He was raving like a lunatic how he was going to kill Jonas.
Jonas fell to his knees, and Hugh kneeled with him, holding him tightly.
"Fine pair we make." Jonas said quietly.
Hugh choked out a small laugh. "You got that right, sweetheart."
Jonas rested his head on Hugh's shoulder and sighed contently. Red and blue flashing lights were quickly approaching, but he couldn't hear anything except the quiet words flowing from Hugh's mouth. He was urging Jo to stay awake, begging him to stay strong, to not leave him.
Jo felt the chill from the night air, or perhaps it was lack of blood. But didn't feel the need to shiver because there was still a warmth in Hugh's arms.
He wanted to stay like this; always in Hugh's arms.
He thought back on the tough life that he had, and all of the close calls. But at least this time, he wasn't alone.
The moments he longed for, but haven't experienced yet reverberated through his mind, causing tears to silently fall.
Moving in together.
Getting married.
Adopting a child and having a family.
Growing old together.
Were they really just dreams in the end? He sighed. Before, he never thought that he would have the luxury to imagine a happy future. But for half a year, he was able to have a beautiful dream.
"I love you." He whispered.
His vision blurred and then faded, but for the first time, he was not afraid of the dark.

Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
