《Hot Chocolate》chapter sixty-two, secret.

I accidentally let my mind wander during first class, completely zoning out of my surroundings and whatever math equation was being scribbled on the board.

First it was about Matthew. When I should've noticed the signs. What I should've said, or done, or not done. They were all regrets. Everything I thought was real, wasn't. I read everything wrong. I felt sympathetic for not liking him the way I thought he liked me.

But then I zoned off to Theo. If I had just listened to him, picked him without hesitation, maybe we'd be in a different place. A better place.

Maybe, in a way, we are, now that Matt's out of the way. I did give him a boner last night, and we were close to almost, maybe, kissing.

I want to tell him. Tonight. Today. I don't know. But I want to be able to look at him and tell him how I feel because maybe a part of him feels the same way.

Before I knew it, the bell was ringing and I was making my way to my next class.

I didn't look for Theo, but I'm sure he'll survive another hour without me.

I took my seat in second period, feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket.

*everything ok?*

*get off your phone before it gets confiscated.*

*i'll take that as a yes.*

I smiled before slipping it back into my pocket.

Maybe something good could come from that something bad.

After class I went to the bathroom - my hair is a mess from the bun I attempted mid-class.

I stood in front of the bathroom mirror, pulling my hair and brushing it with the comb in my bag when I heard a sob from a bathroom stall.

"Hello?"

There was a sniff and then silence, so I knocked on the closed red door. "Hey, is everything okay?"

"Camila?" A voice cracked. Katie.

"Katie?"

The door unlocked and she pushed it open, slumping out with a red nose. "What's up?"

"I'm so sorry, Cami-"

"What? Come here." I pulled her into a hug.

"Are you ok?"

"I'm fine- What's going on?"

"Fuck... I need to tell you something, but you have to hear me out, please."

"Yeah, yeah."

We ended up sitting on the floor, leaning against the radiator. "A lot more things happened at Joey's party than you realised. I was obviously wasted. I don't know if I was drowning my sorrows or celebrating, but either way, I was piss drunk. I was talking to Joey, and I ended up over sharing. I told him something that I shouldn't have told anyone."

I crossing my legs, listening carefully and attempting to comfort Katie, who has only just stopped crying.

"The first day Joey came back to school, I heard him talking to Matt - about you. Joey asked him if he was just doing it to get back at Theodore, and then and idea struck them. They've been planning some sick revenge on Theo for ages, and what better way to do that, than you. They wanted to get you to fall in love with Matt, so you'd leave Theo. At least, that's the plan they told me."

Katie knew. This whole time. When she was being overly nice, or complaining about the boys, it was because she knew.

"I swear to you- I had no idea he was going to hurt you. When they mentioned the kiss I told them they were taking it too far, and they'd already started to drive a wedge between you both - everyone could tell you two were acting differently. I told them to call it off or I'd tell you, but then they threatened to tell everyone what I spilled to Joey that night- and Camila I couldn't-"

She eventually gave up, her voice cracking too much for her to even finish her sentences.

"It's okay." I sighed, resting my head on her shoulder. "I'm not mad."

"Why not? We almost ruined your friendship with Theo-"

"It wasn't you that did that Katie, don't worry."

"It's still my fault-"

"No." I sighed. "But you can't let them control you, just because of this secret-"

"I was pregnant, Camila."

"What?" I sat forward.

"This summer. I didn't know what to do. My parents would disown me, I haven't even graduated yet- I'm a straight-A-student and cheerleader for fucks sake. The father told me it was my decision-"

I pulled her forward into a hug. I had so many questions that I just can't ask.

"I didn't even get the choice in the end. I lost the baby. I got over it, I did. But then my sister announced her pregnancy. She's got this gorgeous nursery in her home, with her army husband and perfect life-"

"Katie, you're still so young..."

"I know- I know..."

I wanted to ask her who the father was, but my gut feeling was screaming at me, and I think already know.

We stayed in our embrace on the bathroom floor, and I even let a tear drip down my face too. A group of girls came flooding into the bathroom, making us break up with an awkward laugh. "Still friends?"

"Always."

We climbed to our feet and fixed our blubbering faces in the mirrors before heading out the bathroom.

"Ooh."

"Oh shit!"

"What's going on?" Katie asked a red-headed junior that walked passed.

"Dunno." He shrugged, "A fight or something."

We both looked at each other with confused faces before turning the corner. That's when I saw Theo, sauntering down the hall towards us, wiping his bloody face on his even bloodier hands.

"Theo?"

I hurried my stride, catching up to him before gripping both sides of his face and inspecting the massive gash on his cheekbone. "What happened?!"

I glanced behind him at the crowd of people, remembering what the redhead said. A fight. Matthew was stumbling back to his feet, with the help of Jake.

"What were you thinking? You could get suspended!"

His hand moved in front of me, dropping something on my chest. I reached up to grab it, catching my black panties I must have left at Matthew's. That's why he beat him up.

Katie read the situation, patting my arm before hurrying off down the hall.

"I'll leave you two to..."

Theo didn't even look me in the eyes before walking in the opposite direction behind me.

"Where do you think you're going?"

"To class." He groaned with his monotony voice.

"No you're not. We're ditching. Give me your keys."

"Since when does Camila ditch?"

"Keys." I held my hand out in front of me.

"I'd rather walk than let you drive."

"Theo-"

"Fine." He pulled his keys out his pocket, using his bloody hand to dangle them in my face. My hand reached for them but he was too quick, raising them higher, with a cheeky look on his face. I don't understand how this boy can go from beating someone up, to teasing me like a child.

My hand shot for his armpit, making him flinch, giving me the opportunity to grab them.

I smirked proudly as I walked out of school not thinking things through properly.

For one, I can barely drive Zoe's car, and I've never drove Theo's.

We tossed our bags in the back of the car and I sat in the drivers seat. It can't be that much different, can it?

He must have noticed my confused expression as I stuck the keys in the ignition.

"You sure you want to drive?"

"How hard can it be?" I smile and started the car.

Number two, where do we go? We're ditching school so Zoe won't be happy, and I don't fancy bumping into her right now, because that would need a long ass explanation.

Then there's Theo's house, but I don't know when Mr DeMarco is home, or if Theo even wants to go there.

Which leaves us with one last option.

"Right... where does your mom live?"
