《My Brother's Best Friend》Chapter 28

Jax, Marissa and I all sat in Sally's diner devouring our food. Since I told them the news we've been eating in silence. We were too surprised to say or think anything but eat.
I couldn't stop smiling to myself like a crazy person. I ate my food in peace, doing a little dance every time I shoved a fry in my mouth.
"Oh, my God, you eat as if you were eating for two." Jax laughs.
"Thankfully, I'm not." I giggle. "So, hush it."
"I'm still in shock." Marissa shakes her head. "I'm so glad you're not pregnant."
"Really? It seemed like you were the only one here excited if I was." I tell her.
She shakes her head. "I was just as nervous. Making jokes during rough situations is my coping mechanism."
"Imagine having to tell Hunter." Jax scoffs.
"I'm surprised you handled this the way you did." I say, chewing on a fry or three.
"What do you mean?" He furrows his eyebrows.
"I thought you would be more angry when you found out back at the bus stop. Or at least try to kill Alex on the way." I respond.
"I was in shock. I didn't know what to feel." He wipes his hands on the napkin and takes a sip from his drink.
"Schools about to finish, we should start heading back." Marissa says.
Jax's phone vibrates on the table and I see Rebecca's name flash across the screen. He quickly grabs the phone, looking at me with a weird face.
"It's just my mom." Jax's says, putting his phone in the pocket of his jacket.
"You're not going to answer?" Marissa questions.
"Nah, it's probably not important." He shrugs. "Anyways, we should get going."
Grabbing our garbage, we get up from the table and throw it out. We leave Sally's and head to Jax's car, feeling a weight lifted from all of us.
"Are you feeling okay?" Jax says, coming to my side of the car.
"I guess," I shrug. "Just a slight headache."
"Do you want me to stop at the pharmacy to get Advil? Wait, I think I might have some in the car." He turns around and was about to open the door when I stopped him.

Pushing him against the car I close my eyes and within seconds my lips press against his. It took him a couple seconds to gather himself before he starts to move his lips with mine.
I didn't know what came over me but I've been wanting to do that for so long, I couldn't waste the chance. I saw Jax's true colors today and it warmed my heart how much he showed he cared about me.
"What was that for?" Jax says, out of breath once we pull away.
"My way of saying thank you." I grin. "For being by my side today."
He grabs my face, pressing his lips against mine again. "You're welcome."
He opens the door for me, smiling ear to ear as he watches me get in.
"Thanks." I utter before he closes the door.
"You have a lot of explaining to do." Marissa says from the backseat.
"You saw?" I giggle.
"You tackled the poor guy against my window, I more than saw." She chuckles.
"Shh, he's coming." I say quickly, watching Jax open the door and get in.
As soon as Jax started the car, his phone rang three times, signaling someone was texting him. He pulls out his phone and unlocks it, staring at the screen intensely.
"It's Hunter. He knows you skipped school." Jax quickly pulls out of the lot, stepping on the gas and turning in the direction of the school.
"What? How?" I frantically say.
"He went to our Spanish class and saw we weren't there. He went to the attendance office and they told him you hadn't been there all day." Jax explained.
"We're so fucked." I say under my breath.
"You'll be fine. He can't do anything." Marissa says, trying to calm me down. "On the bright side you won't have to tell him he's going to be an uncle. You just have to figure out what lie to tell him."
"Marissa." My voice comes out serious.
"Sorry, coping mechanism." She defends.
Within ten minutes we reach the school. We get there right when my school day ends but Marissa still had a class left to attend.

"I'll see you tomorrow." Marissa says, getting out of the car. "Thanks for today Jax."
"No problem." He says.
Shutting the car door, Marissa walks away from the car and heads into school. Jax and I immediately spot Hunter coming out of the school. You could see his angry expression from miles away. The way he stomped over to us made my body tense.
"I'll talk to him." Jax says, unbuckling his seat belt.
"No," I sigh. "Let me."
"Are you sure?" He asks.
"Yeah, it's better." I follow after Jax and get out of the car.
Before I could do anything, Hunter reaches the car and immediately pushes Jax, grabbing him by his shirt.
"Are you fucking kidding me?! My sister, you dick head?" Hunter yelled.
I ran over to their side and pulled on Hunter trying to pry him off of Jax.
"Hunter, stop!" I raise my voice. "You're making a scene."
"I told you to stay away from her and the first thing you do is make her skip school with you!" Hunter's fist collides with Jax, causing Jax to stumble and fall to the ground.
"Jax! Oh, my God." I yelled out. I pushed Hunter out of the way and run over to Jax who was spitting out blood. His lip was split open, gushing out blood.
"You're fucking stupid!" I scream at Hunter.
Jax gets off the floor and wipes his mouth with his shirt, leaving a red stain all over it.
"I warned him." Hunter spat.
"Warned him about what?" I shook my head at him in disbelief. "He's your friend, Hunter. You don't do this to your friends. It was my idea to skip school. I was with Marissa at the bus stop when he saw us and wouldn't let us leave without telling him what we were doing. I made him promise to not tell you."
Hunter's face fell, too shocked to say anything.
There were people around staring at us to see if anyone else was going to continue to fight. I looked at Hunter with disgust, ashamed at the way he reacted.
"I'll be back." I say to Jax.
Moving away from him, I grab Hunter's arm and lead him away from Jax making sure he wouldn't be able to hear us.
Now was the moment I had to confront Hunter. I had to make him choose. Either let Jax be in my life or he'd find out about Rebecca.
I knew it wasn't my place to tell Jax about what I had heard but if it meant doing it to teach Hunter a lesson, I would. I wasn't going to be running around in secret with Jax, friends or whatever.
In this moment being friends was the only thing that would work. The kiss we shared wouldn't go forgotten but it was the least of my worries right now.
"You have to stop this." I tell him as I look over at Jax who was leaning against his car. He was trying to stop his lip from bleeding with his shirt. I couldn't help but stare at the exposed skin he was showing.
"I'm trying to protect you. Trust me you don't want to get involved with Jax." He warns.
"I'm not asking you to let me marry him, Hunter. I've known Jax the same amount of time you have. Sure we never really got along but I'll I'm asking is to let him be around me without you getting all crazy."
"Hell no, it's better this way trust me, Emma." He shakes his head.
"Better for who?" I scoff.
"You don't know him the way I do." He says.
"You're right." I agree. "I don't, but I can if you let me."
His body tenses and he crosses his arms, looking over at Jax. "He likes you."
My heart flutters, trying to suppress a smile. "I know. That isn't going to change anything. He's with Rebecca."
"That isn't stopping him from trying to get with you." He snaps.
"Clearly, just like it isn't stopping you from getting with Rebecca."
