《Mi Reina》Chapter Thirty Six - Café

My leg shook up and down while the tips of my fingers tapped the table unconsciously while Rico, Callum, Antonio and I sat at one of the tables and waited in the café. It had taken us almost an hour and a half to reach the location that Callum decoded from the messages.
I sat between Rico and Callum while Antonio sat opposite us, leaving the chair next to him empty. I didn't know what I was expecting. We could be walking right into our graves for all we know due to the fact that we hadn't brought Rico's men. And yeah, it was a stupid decision but Rico is too so...eh.
The pace of my fingers tapping on the table became louder and faster; I grew anxious as every second passed by.
"That's starting to get annoying, Ea." Callum said, running is fingers through his hair in frustration.
"Oh, really?" I asked, tapping my fingers much faster now.
"Why are you doing this to me?" He covered his ears, not not before giving me a stank eye. Damn, I love annoying this guy. It's too easy.
The door of the café opened which made the bell-like sound ring through the bakery, indicating that someone had arrived. The four of us turned to the direction of the door in search of someone, anyone.
And there he stood. Walking towards our table in a black tee and jeans like he was a normal person rather than someone who had killed the Don of the Italian mafia two weeks back.
He took slow steps, a looming gaze set on us like we were his prey. He looked exactly like he did three years ago; his straight beachy blonde hair, those clear blue eyes that I once were in love with and a lean physique.

Just a second after he took a seat next to Antonio, I heard clicks and soon realized that the three of them pointed their guns at him from under the table. He didn't look surprised by their actions and spoke calmly, "So, I see that you got the clues that I sent. How are you on this fine day?"
"What do you want?" Antonio asked, ignoring his previous question.
"To talk, of course." He replied.
"Talk, then." Rico said coldly.
"Jeez, rude. Is he like the mother duck of everyone here, becau-" Devon started but was interrupted by Callum this time.
"Just talk about what you wanted to."
"Oh God! Why can't I just-" Devon exclaimed but stopped himself after setting his eyes on me. "Ooh, how have you been doing, Boo?"
I narrowed my eyes at him, annoyed at the fact that he was using a nickname that he used to call me back when we were dating.
"Don't you call me that ever again." I said, my voice dripping with venom.
"Chile, Xia." He sighed. "I'm not here to get you back; tell you that I did all of this for you and that I still have feelings for you...I don't. I called you here because I need your help."
"What? Why the heck do you think that we would even help you? I mean, give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you right here, right now." Rico expressed his anger. I mean, he did shoot him.
"Look, I'm didn't kill Lorenzo, shoot you and threaten Xia everyday by choice, okay?" He let out. "I was forced to by someone who has my brother."
I furrowed my eyes in confusion and so the did the other three. I knew he was talking about Garret, his older brother. He and I were quite close at the time Devon and I were dating.

"How do we know that you're not lying?" Rico asked. "You got proof?"
"Uh," He thought for a while and a minute later, he unlocked his phone. After scrolling up for a few seconds, he showed us a picture of a man being held down by shackles, his face was covered with dried blood and bruises.
"That's my brother, Garret." He said, tears pooling in his eyes.
"Should we believe him?" Callum whispered, asking Rico what was to be done.
"I don't think that he can trusted." Rico whispered back.
"Look, I can even give you evidence of the threats that the person has been sending me." Devon said, tapping on the play button of a voice note.
A robotic voice, that was clearly modified, spoke.
"You will listen to what I say from now onward. I have your brother, Garret. If you don't do just as I say or involve the cops in any way, I will kill him."
To say that I was astonished by the message would be an understatement. While I was listening to the voice note, I felt like there was something familiar in the way that the person spoke, like I had heard it before. Dismissing the thought, I continued listening to the message.
"You will find instructions of what you're supposed to do if the glove compartment of your car. I will not hesitate to put a bullet in your brother's skull if you don't follow my orders." The distorted voice threatened.
"So I got afraid and started doing everything on that list; finding out the location of your bakery, your apartment, buying a can of red paint for some reason, and then I was told to stalk you. Now, I had a feeling that my past was catching up to me at first, seeing that I was in the mafia. But later on, when it started to become more directed to Xia, I doubted it." Devon explained.
"I was told to send those threats everyday later and my phone got blocked by the person so I was given a burner phone. The only way that I could get in contact with you was like this." He said, out of breath.
"That still doesn't explain why you were at the fort." Rico stated.
"I was told to kill Lorenzo and did, but I was also supposed to do the same to you. Being the good Samaritan that I am, I shot you in the abdomen instead. You should be grateful, lover boy." He answered.
"Okay, we'll take him back with us to the warehouse." Rico said without another thought.
I was so overwhelmed by what he just said and wasn't even sure whether I should have believe him. I mean, everything that he has shown us points to him telling the truth but we could never be too sure. It was Rico's call. He had to decide if we would help him or not and he just did.
