《Unveiling the Arcane》Maddox

It seemed when the twins made the deal that we had to watch all the movies and not just the original ones they had forgotten to tell Sage she had to stay awake for them. A quarter of the way through The Amazing Spider-Man Sage fell asleep.
I was staring down at where she had turned. When we had watched the other movies, she had been leaning back against me on a pillow. Now her chest was pressed against mine and her arm had threaded around the back of my left shoulder. The pillow had been pushed down separating her groin from mine. It was probably a good thing with the way she moved while she slept. I would feel like a creep rubbing up against her while she wasn't conscious.
Warmth radiated from her cheek and pressed against my right shoulder. Something about the way her face was relaxed made her look so innocent. The soft rumbling in my chest started again. Sage rubbed her cheek on my shirt before moving her head to the center of my chest where the rumbling was more prominent. A small sigh escaped her lips when she settled back down.
"Dude, are you purring?" Caden looked at me past his brother and Dante.
Usually, I would have shrugged but I was worried about disturbing Sage so I loosely wrapped my arms around her to be able to sign. "So what?"
"You're making noise." Aiden points out.
I nod. "I can growl and roar when I'm shifted. I think this is me using my beast's abilities." I say what I assume is happening.
Dante and the twins all furrow their brows in a way that shows they have been living together for years. Dante finally nods, "That makes sense."
Sage murmured in her sleep before settling back down. We all watched her as her lashes feathered out over her cheeks and heavy breaths passed her lips. I had felt like trash the whole day, but at this moment I felt content. I was sure I was coming down with something but having her in my arms made me feel better.

Nobody said anything after that. Sometime during the next movie, I fell asleep too to the soothing pattern of Sage's breathing.
I woke when something pressed up against my side. Slowly my eyes opened to reveal the twins' dark room. The sound of deep breathing came from around me. Sage was still laying on top of me fast asleep. Though the heaviness around her waist had increased from the arm that was thrown around her. An arm that wasn't mine. At some point, Dante had rolled over and put his arm around Sage's waist. A flash from the left made me feel temporarily blinded. A soft snicker let me know it was Caden who had snapped the picture.
Dante moved and I began to hope it was a roll of quarters in his pocket because I wouldn't be able to look at him the same if it wasn't. Trying to distract myself I ran my fingers over Sage's backstopping when my fingers found something soft and velvety. Lifting my hand, I found one soft black feather. Caden walked over towards where I was laying and studied the feather as well. A light iridescence shone when the feather turned. "A feather? Maybe she's a phoenix?" Caden whispered.
I studied it before shaking my head and allowing him to pluck it from my fingers. "It's not red. Besides phoenixes aren't from hell."
Caden was looking closely at the feather, "Fallen angel?" He asked.
I frowned deeply studying Sage for a moment before shaking my head in denial. "No way. She would remember her past and if she had a fallen angel parent there would be no keeping that secret. Their abilities show in adolescence." I signed with him.
"I've got a few rare volumes on Demonic Arcane Species. I'll look through them to see what I can find." Caden spoke, tucking the feather into his shirt pocket.

I was surprised at this. Caden wasn't a big sharer even when it came to the knowledge he had stolen. I was surprised he was willing to use it to help Sage. I guess she affected him as much as she affected me. I looked at the way Dante had curled against us in his sleep and wondered if she affected all of them that way. A thought suddenly came to me. It was crazy and kind of taboo but there was one way we could all get what we wanted. I looked down at Sage wondering if she was better at sharing than Caden and hoping that she was.

Given a year to prepare by the mysterious ‘system’ for contact with the wider galaxy, humanity must work to ensure the Earth’s defense is ready to meet any challenge. Sadly, most of the world seems dedicated to tearing itself apart as the year-end deadline gets closer. The west is in barely contained Chaos, while the east descends into internal conflict and war. The Pillar Forts, one of the few successful projects of the United Nations headed by the United States, stand ready to defend humanity against any invasion that may come through the strange Connection Pillars that appeared on each continent. Massive steel and stone walls that surround the Connection Pillars. They are filled with deadly men and women trained in all manner of warfare, each trained in the newly acquired System with skills and magical abilities that they put to deadly purpose. Beside these brave warriors, tanks, helicopters, artillery and more stand ready to defend humanity at each of these powerful installations. But, can they overcome the disparity in levels and experience between themselves and the forces that threaten them and the rest of humanity? Main Characters Jessica Brown- A young African American girl. Her 18th birthday in Detroit was the same day the systems message appeared. She discovered she was Level 7, much higher than most of the rest of the world. Why she is blessed, or cursed, with the power she doesn’t know. But what she does know is that she rather likes the feeling that comes with manipulating magic. The week after her birthday, government workers started testing every person in the US in a massive census effort of skills and abilities. Jessica Brown found herself conscripted into the US Magical Corp, a new branch of the US Military, and shipped off to a Pillar Fort. Somewhere hot and muggy in her ancestors’ home of Africa. As she grows stronger, she finds she has some connection to the pillars. While everyone else sees beauty or danger when they look at the pillars, after connection is made all Jessica can see is a Tree. A tree the size of the entire universe. Isaka Smith - is a third generation American and farmer who just wants to be left alone. But she is dragged into the situation by events beyond her control. When people in her small town had to deal with rioters and looters after the system announcement, she rallied them to defend themselves, earning her a trait that the government found extraordinarily useful. After a visit to a local reservation, she finds herself conscripted to lead one of the many small support towns erected around the great pillar forts. Not near her old home, but in far-flung Africa. John McIntire, the “Fighting Bull” -The commander of the African Fort, but because of circumstances beyond his ability to contend with shortly after taking command after being re-activated from retirement, he finds communication with his chain of command increasingly difficult. The US government, hell, even the United Nations, seems to have fallen into complete and utter chaos. The African Union is embroiled in a bitter civil war just outside his door, and supposedly, most of the world governments are in similar situations. Meanwhile, John must do his best to be ready to facilitate diplomacy, or to match the hostile argument of whatever force might come through the pillar of light when the year timer finishes counting down. Can our heros defend Earth from outside threats, while it tares itself apart? Or will they need to rebuild from the ground up? DEDICATION: This story is dedicated to my father who passed away recently. Jim Holloway, you’ll be missed you old silverback gorilla. Love you dad. Always have, always will.
