《Come Back To Me, Kiwi.》Chapter 48 - Chicken and Evan

Vivi was sitting with his Momma, and I was in the kitchen. Aunt Em was sitting on the kitchen counter with Evan and Uncle Killian standing beside her. I pulled the chicken breasts out of the freezer and put them in a bowl of warm water to help them thaw.

I started working on something to spice up that chicken. I learned from Fifi that spice is my best friend in the kitchen.

I was enjoying my freedom honestly. It feels good to be independent. I bought fluffy pillows even though Vivi said no. I ended up wearing the shorts I wanted to the beach before we went shopping. I didn't feel the most comfortable in those shorts, but they were just more convenient for me, so I wore them.

I bought whatever I wanted and not what Vivi necessarily would've picked. But Vivi had no taste, poor thing. The apartment really needed a lot of help. Now that it was looking it's best, I was happy. Vivi seemed a little off, but he seemed more shocked than anything. I hoped he wouldn't get too mad about the fluffy pillows.

"This chicken is heaven!" Evan said, having the leftover chicken from last night that Vivi wanted to eat.

Vivi was pretty spoiled. He seemed like he got what he wanted more often than not, and he knew it well. I would always have Vivi's best interest at heart. I wanted him to have some chicken like he wanted, but Evan looked hungry and I was going to make food anyway, so Vivi could wait.

"You like it?" I asked him.

"Oh yes! I love it." Evan smiled at me.

"So, Evan.... tell me about yourself." I said to him, trying not to show how nervous I was.

"First, tell me why you're ok with Vidal being so controlling." Aunt Em said.

I knew he was controlling because he worried about me, but that didn't mean I'd let him just take complete control. He wanted me to have freedom too, and I knew in the end he wouldn't be mad at me for taking my freedom. He might get a little annoyed, but he knew what was reasonable and what wasn't.

"He can't control me. I like giving him some control because there are things I don't want the responsibility of deciding. But if he's being unreasonable, he knows it." I said to her.

"Alright. Just, tell him if he's being too much, and don't let him win all the time." Aunt Em told me.

"I won't. But I promise he doesn't cross lines... I wore the short shorts I wanted to wear and he had to live with it, and I bought the pillows that he told me not to get." I giggled. "He knows when he can't fight me."

"Good." Aunt Em said. "You have to control this man a little."

"I already do." I said to her, putting my finger over my lips.

That made all three of them laugh and I giggled.

"So, Evan?" I asked.

"I don't know what to say." He said, turning red and shifting closer to his mother.

"What do you like?" I asked him.

"Lizards." He laughed.

"Yes! Some lizards are the cutest!" I giggled.

"Lizards? Cute?!" Aunt Em asked in horror.

"Yes." I nodded, smiling up at her.

"Ok. That's where I draw the line... lizards cannot be cute... they're gross." Aunt Em said.

"That's not true, Momma. They can be very cute." Evan said, taking my side.

"Ok, Kill, let's get out of here. The words cute and lizards used in the same sentence doesn't sit well with me." Aunt Em laughed, dragging her husband away.

"Can I help you with anything, Kiara?" Evan asked me, making me look up at him in surprise.

Somehow I didn't expect him to be so delicate about how he addressed things, but so far he was the most gentle of all the guys.

"No, it's alright." I smiled at him. "I've got everything under control."

"Could you teach me how to make something?" He asked me.

"Doesn't Fifi teach you?" I asked.

"Yeah, of course. But I've always got more to learn." He smiled at me.

"Alright." I chuckled. "I'm just going to make some spicy chicken with rice and veggies."

"Sounds delicious." He smiled down at me.

"Hopefully it'll be as delicious as it sounds." I laughed. "Have you ever made rice with veggies mixed in?" I asked him.

"No... I don't remember ever doing that." He said, shaking his head.

"What about just rice?" I asked him.

"Yeah, I've made that." He said.

"Why don't you wash the rice for me?" I asked him.

"Of course. I can do that." He smiled, following my instructions on how much rice to wash. He was definitely an over thinker. He questioned everything.

Every few seconds, he'd ask how he should do something. Like how to put the rice in the pot I would cook it in.

He helped me cut some veggies, he helped me finish the sauce I was making and helped me spice the chicken. He was a great helper. He helped me get enough plates out and he also helped me serve the food.

And while we did it all, we talked and got to know each other. I told him about how I liked redecorating the house, how I enjoyed cooking and baking and how I loved taking care of Mia and Mila. He asked about how I was doing with eating since I've been with Vivi, and I told him I was a few pounds away from my goal.

He was calm, supportive, and very soft about everything he did. Something about him made me feel like he knew real sadness, and I learned that he did struggle sometimes with feeling a little inadequate and lost. I encouraged him and assured him he was an amazing man, which was true.

He told me Vidal really liked me and pointed out how Vivi struggled to keep his eyes off me. I explained what I knew about why our relationship couldn't progress yet. Then I decided to bring up any girls he might be into.

"So I'm over here with Vidal... what about you?" I asked him.

"What about me?" He asked, turning red and showing me that he understood well what I was talking about.

"Do you live alone?" I asked him, deciding to ease into it.

"Yeah, I have an apartment close to the wildlife park." He said to me.

"And do you have a girlfriend?" I asked him.

"No." He said, rubbing his neck as he peeled a garlic clove for me.

"Don't rub your neck with garlic on your fingers, Ev." I said, pulling his hand away from his neck.

"Sorry." He said.

"Don't be sorry, but tell me, how come someone as cute as you doesn't have a girlfriend yet?" I asked.

"I don't know. I guess girls don't see me much.... I don't like attention." He explained.

"I see.... well, do you at least like a girl?" I asked him.

"No." He said, turning red.

"But....?" I asked, knowing there was more he wasn't telling me.

"But there's a girl who lives in my apartment building." He said softly.

"What about her?" I asked him, wanting to jump up and down in excitement for him.

"She's very beautiful." He smiled, still red as a tomato.

"Really? And what's her name?" I asked him.

"I don't know... I just landed back here from Ontario yesterday and I heard some stuff from her apartment above me. I went to go make sure everything was alright, and I don't really know what was going on.... she was kind of rude actually, but I think she was just angry." He explained.

"Oh. I see." I smiled, looking up at him and seeing how he was still all red. "Do you think maybe it could become a thing... like maybe in the future there might be something between you?"

"Well, I'm not sure. I think she's gorgeous... but if she's really rude like that all the time, I don't know if I can be with someone like that." He said.

"That's understandable. But if she was angry then maybe it was just that." I told him.

"I know. That's why I won't hold it against her." He chuckled.

"I have a question." I said to him.

"What is it?" He asked me.

"Has Ari ever tried to set you up?" I asked him.

"No. Or at least if she did I was completely unaware." He said, looking down at me.

"Ok... I was just wondering. She really wants more sisters." I chuckled.

"What about you? You want more sisters?" He asked me.

"Of course. Sisters are great. I've realized that it's not easy to find a girl who gets you... a girl who's prepared to have your back no matter what, but with the right girl, it's like you're sisters. Like Ari was ready for a sister, and I was ready for one too. When we met it was just perfect, we could have the most fun in the world by just talking." I said.

"But doesn't that ever get boring. Just talking to each other." He said.

"No." I laughed.

"Girls are strange. But I promise you'll get some more great sisters. Gabe has a girl he's determined to get and she sounds great. Romeo also seems to have something going on. And Theo.... well Theo is struggling but I think he'll get May back." Evan said.

"Mabel?" I asked.

"Yeah, I used to call her May. They were perfect for each other." Evan chuckled.

"You think she's waiting for him too?" I asked.

"Without a shred of doubt... I know she's waiting for Theo to find her. But he's too scared to look and she probably is too..." Evan told me.

"What about you? I better get another sister from you, Evan." I said with a laugh, nudging him with my elbow.

"I want a girlfriend. I really do... but sometimes I feel like it's really hard to find a good, genuine girl who is prepared to be there for you like you hope to be there for her." He said to me.

"I don't doubt that it's hard... but you're such a sweetheart, Evan." I told him. "You'll find the perfect girl. Sometimes I think it's a good thing to show a girl you're there for her so she knows she can open up and stuff."

"Why can't they do that for me?" He asked.

"They can. But... if the girl is anything like me... it'll be really hard for her to initiate things... it's just a little scary sometimes." I said.

"I get that. I don't blame girls for not trusting guys enough to let them in. After seeing all those idiots in high school being disrespectful, and cheating and hurting all the girls. I get it." He said.

I nodded. I didn't know much about that. But I know the messed up things that people do to each other.

"You know, you're great to talk to, Ev." I smiled.

"Am I?" He asked with a smile.

"Yeah." I nodded.

"That's good to know, I guess." He smiled, plating the rice and the chicken just like I demonstrated while we were talking.

We went and handed around all the plates and I gave Vivi his, sitting between him and Uncle Killian. I talked with the shy man and got to know a lot about where Evan's somewhat timid behaviour came from.

The rest of the night was great, and slowly everyone left the apartment in their little groups, leaving me and Vivi. My favourite person ever.
