《Save My Hope》16 | Determined

When I get to work, I park my truck in the garage grabbing my bag and lab coat thinking about Phoebe. I head out of the garage and straight into the ER. It is surprisingly quiet, but I know I just jinxed it. I walk to the locker room and put my bag into my locker. I put on my lab coat, clip my pager on my scrub pants and head to the Nurse's station.
Once I grab a tablet, I head to the ICU, knowing Maria is recovering well. Her skin grafts have been healing nicely, and she hasn't had any problems with infections. Her parents were discharged a few days ago, but every single day, they are here. It's a long recovery process...
When I get to the ICU, Doctor Leah Miller is already in the room with a sleeping Maria. She is checking her vitals and administering medicine. I knock on the glass wall separating the room from the rest of the floor. Doctor Miller looks up, signalling for me to wait. I cross my arms over my chest and wait for her to leave Maria's room. When she does, I walk up to her as she removes the protective gear.
"Good morning, Doctor McGuire." She smiles, pushing the gear into the disposable bin.
"Hello, Doctor Miller. I could have taken care of Maria." I say, walking behind her as she grabs a tablet from the Nurse's station.
"Oh. I don't mind." She types in Maria's vitals, and when she finishes, my tablet is updated. "I am just about to clock out." She puts the tablet on the rack where the nurses charge them and grab a pile of folders opening them.
"Thanks." I give her a fake smile, annoyed that Maria isn't her patient, yet she is taking her vitals and administering medication. "I will leave you with your paperwork." I turn around going to the rest of my patients.
I am checking vitals, bloodwork, and surgical sights. I get a page that I'm needed in the ER. I rush to the elevator, head to the ground floor where the ER is located and see the hectic rush of patients. I knew I jinxed it-
I walk up to the bed I got paged to, and I hear a man screaming. I pull open the rest of the curtain, and I see a broken arm completely snapped in half hanging by a few pieces of skin. Oh, fabulous-

I put on a pair of gloves and help the Nurses hold him down. I tell them to give him a sedative, and they do as I say. They push the liquid into his upper arm, and he instantly calms down and passes out. I sigh, finally able to examine the damage to his arm. Once I'm finished, I toss the gloves away.
"Where are the paramedics that brought him in?" I ask the Nurses to get the patient ready for surgery.
"Out by the Nurses Station, Doctor." The Nurse that is half the size of me says, attaching an IV to his arm.
"Thanks. Get the patient ready for transport." I leave the Nurses to do their job, closing the curtains and heading to the male paramedics. "Are you the guys who brought in the male patient with the broken arm?" I ask them, and they both nod their heads. "What happened?"
"We got a call saying there was a man by the side of the road with a broken arm. When we arrived, the man was laying at the side of the road, screaming. As we got close, we saw the condition of his arm- He kept repeating "the car!" over and over." The one blonde paramedic says, shaking his head.
"Thank you. You guys can leave." I give them a small smile, headed back to my patient, and the Nurses are ready to transport him. They secured the arm as much as possible, hiding it from people walking by. "Let's get him into OR Three," I say, and they nod their heads. I pull the bed as they push it. We get into the elevator and head into the hall where all the Operating Rooms are.
As they are setting him up for surgery, I decided to give Phoebe a call. I go to the call log calling the top number and wait for her to answer the call. When she doesn't, I can't help but feel worried, but I save her name on my phone.
I switch it on vibrate, putting it with the other Nurse's cellphones. I have two rules in my operating rooms, no cell phones, and no music. So I will have to wait four to five hours to recall Phoebe. I put on my surgeon's cap and tie the bottom half of the surgical mask around my neck. I press the paddle at the bottom of the large metal sink and scrub my hands and arms almost raw.

Once I am done, I press my back against the door, opening it as a nurse already prepped and sterile puts on my disposable gown over my scrubs and sterile gloves. I bend down for her to tie my surgical mask and put on my safety glasses. I give her a small nod, and I go to work to see if I can repair the damage, or cut it off.
After thoroughly examining the arm, I don't think there is enough tissue to repair the arm. I ask the anesthesiologist if his stats are right and he nods his head.
I am taking out all of the damaged tissue, starting to lose my hope to repair the arm.
"Should I get the bone cutter, Doctor?" The Nurse across from me asks. I look up at her, nodding my head. While she is fetching it out, I look at the man with a tube down his throat.
"I'm sorry," I say, ignoring the looks I am currently getting.
The Nurse hands me the powered tool, and I warn them before I turn it on, "It's gonna get bloody," I see the one nurse back away slightly. I switch it on, getting to work.
After four and a half hours, I safely remove his arm and suture up what is left. I don't know this man's name, but I just took his arm off. It's part of the job- I quickly remind myself, walking out of the OR as the nurses get ready to transport him to recovery. I dispose of the bloody gown and scrub my hands. I grab my phone, and I still have no calls from Phoebe.
I grab the rest of my things heading back into the busy parts of the hospital. I am ready to check on the rest of my patients. Maria is healthy, and most importantly, stable. Her parents are now in her room, talking in Spanish. Luckily, I understand them clearly. I also know how to speak Arabic and Persian from the war zones I was in in the Army.
I look down at my watch, and it is past the afternoon. I am walking to the cafe, deciding to phone Phoebe again.
"Hello?" She answers, sounding like she just woke up. I sigh in relief as I hear her voice.
"Did I wake you?" I ask, sitting down at a table with my healthy lunch.
"I fell asleep on the couch, watching a documentary." I hear her yawn, "But I'm up now." I hear her sigh, making me wonder if she is okay.
"How are you feeling?" I eat my lunch, "Have you taken your medication?" I ask, I know she is annoyed with me, but I want to make sure she is taken care of herself. "I took them around Eight in the morning. I should be fine until dinner time." I hear her take in a deep breath, letting it go slowly.
"Are you sure?" I ask, wondering why she is doing that. "If you need to take them earlier, do it. Don't push yourself."
"I'm fine, Doctor." She quickly stops me, groaning in annoyance. "I just think I slept wrong."
"On your ribs?" I shake my head, hoping she didn't re-injure herself. "Phoebe, you need-" I stop myself, knowing she didn't mean to sleep on her injured side. "I will check them when I get home," I calm myself down, not wanting to upset her.
"Yes. But I'm fine, Doctor. I will let you know if anything changes." She chuckles slightly, letting out a deep sigh.
"You better," I smirk and finish my food, looking at my watch signalling my lunch is over. "I have to go. Lunch is over. Call me or text me if you need me." I toss my food into the trash, ready to clock back in.
"See you soon." She says, hanging up the phone and I clock back in. I have seven more hours until I get to go home and see Phoebe. My heart does this weird thing to the thought of seeing her beautiful green eyes behind those cute glasses.
I am walking down the hallway to check on my new patient I operated on earlier and my phone vibrates. I instantly stop what I'm doing, thinking it is Phoebe. But it is an unknown number. I answer the call, unprepared to who was on the other end.
"Hello, this is New York Center for Rehabilitation, we have a call for Noah McGuire from Victoria Smith. Do you accept the call?" A female voice asks.
"No." I hang up, continuing to do my job.
