《Adaptive Learner》Chapter 2

The moon had only just begun to rise when a lone girl had started running from a wolf. The chilly breeze of the night blew through the leaves of trees, as the night continued, rain pouring from the sky. The girl was running at a fast pace, pulling every low branch back to launch and hit the wolf.
The wolf understanding slowly what the girl was doing increased its pace while jumping whenever a branch would launch at it. The girl, taking a turn, looked around for the largest branch she could find and threw it at the wolf, hitting the wolf in the head. Snarling the wolf increased its pace to its fastest out of anger and charged at the girl.
Grabbing a large branch, the girl decided that it would catch up soon even if she ran, so she decided to try to fight it. The wolf halted looking at the girl, with hunger in its eyes. The girl's black hair shone in the moonlight, as the wolf howled.
The wolf was now ready to charge at the girl. The girl screamed as she swung the branch at the wolf hitting it in the face. It made a squeal before charging again, this time attacking the branch. The wolf bit into the branch as hard as it could, snapping it in half, before jumping back. The girl screamed one more time, as the wolf tackled her to the ground.
***
Toshiro ran through the rain forest looking from where he had heard the first scream. The direction it had sounded from was near the stream. Running in the direction of the stream, thunder roared as he continued. The moon's light continuously shone upon the forest, as he went further in.
***
Arriving at the stream, a bloodied girl and a wolf lay before my eyes. The rain continued to pour upon my cloak, as I crouched and went at a slow pace to the wolf. The wolf was howling currently at the moon which was now at its highest, but I did not doubt in my mind that once it finished it would kill her.
As I got near the wolf, its howling stopped, I guess I wouldn't be able to surprise attack it. Sighing, I got up and charged at the wolf. The wolf, now noticing me, tried to bite into the spear, but to its dismay, I expected that. Pulling the spear that the wolf had clamped onto with its teeth, I put my palm against its stomach and used my mana for that small wisp of fire. Thankfully it was enough pain to get the wolf to let go of the spear. The wolf jumped back, but before I let it charge again I threw the spear at the wolf. The spear pierced the wolf through the stomach as it snarled in pain. Desperately, it charged at me, but to its dismay, I grabbed one of the broken branch pieces and blocked its bite with that. I punched it once in the face before it fell. Pulling out my spear, made it bark once before its eyes went lifeless.

Putting the palm of my hand on the wolf's head I stole the memories and knowledge it had contained. My mind felt rejuvenated, once I was finished as I looked through its memories and knowledge. That gave me a lot more knowledge than I thought it would. The knowledge of this wolf was much more than expected, as I had learned many things from it, such as new locations.
I turned around to see if the girl was alive, but my train of thought broke when I noticed she was wearing no clothes. Turning back around quickly, I took off my cloak and threw it on her. It was a good thing I had chosen to wear clothes underneath this. I put my head against the cloak, to listen for a heartbeat. She was alive. Noticing as I couldn't leave her here without treating those wounds, it was decided I would have to take her back. Closing my eyes I attempted to put the cloak on her fully, and thankfully I succeeded with no problems.
Picking her up, I put her on my back as I carried her to the cave with my spear in my mouth. The rain poured on my head, as I started to head back. What a pain this night had already begun to be.
***
Arriving back at the cave, I traveled to the room with the campfire. It was both the warmest and the most protected, so putting her near the fire would help her wounds heal faster. I pulled up her sleeves to see the bite marks on her arms after laying her down near the campfire. Treating her wounds to the best of my abilities, I got up and went over to the stone-carved throne. I wonder if that would be comfortable to sleep in if I were to lay something soft on it.
Going back over to the girl I sat down, as I looked at the palm of my hand then looked at the girl again. Should I really test this on her? Will this even work? Giving in to my temptations I decided to try it just once. I brushed her hair to the side, as I placed the palm of my hand on her forehead. I waited for the copy or steal of her memories to work, but to no avail. It doesn't seem to work, maybe it'll work if she gives her permission.

Getting up I grabbed the spear, before sitting down on the stone-carved throne. What a pain this night has been.
***
Waking up, Toshiro looked around the cavern-like room. The girl still lay asleep, beside the now gone-out campfire. Getting up, he cast fire magic on the campfire, before going to the storage room for food. Getting back from the storage room, Toshiro carried four apples with him.
Sitting down on a rock near the girl, Toshiro pondered as he took a bite of an apple. The girl had begun to stir when Toshiro had finished the apple. Rubbing her eyes, she sat up, looking around at the cavern room.
Noticing Toshiro, she turned to look at him.
"Where am I? the girl asked, with a look of distrust and fear on her face.
"You're in my cave," Toshiro said, beginning to eat another apple.
"Why did you save-" Sena was asking as Toshiro interrupted her.
"Before you ask anything else, Let me ask something," Toshiro said with curiosity still on his mind from the previous night.
"Can I copy your mind?" Toshiro asked while looking at the palm of his hand.
The girl looked confused and looked at Toshiro thinking about what was just requested of her. Reluctantly she nodded at Toshiro. With that Toshiro, lay the palm of his hand on the girl's forehead attempting to copy her mind. Toshiro felt relief in his mind, as he finished the copy.
***
I looked at the girl, but she was now asleep again on the cavern floor so I decided to focus on something else. Looking through her memories, I found one particular memory that stuck out from the rest. Using some type of green magic, she had healed a scrape she had gotten from tripping on a rock. I wonder if this would be able to heal her wounds. Concentrating my mana into the palm of my hands, I tried creating healing magic. It worked.
A green orb appeared just like in the memory as the attempt continued. Moving my hands, I placed the green orb on one of the wounds that were on the girl. Looking at the wound, I watched as it slowly healed. This is amazing magic. I continued applying this magic to each of her wounds until all were healed.
Once finished I tried getting up but fell back down. This had never happened before, so why was it happening? My hunger began to grow, as I tried once more to get up, but to no avail. My hunger is almost insatiable now, making my stomach cramp. Crawling back to the throne I grabbed an apple and finished it within a minute. By the time I had finished the final apple, my hunger had been satiated.
***
The moon had begun to creep upon the world, as Toshiro left the cave. Looking at the moon, Toshiro walked at a slow pace, as he went through the forest. The cool, chill breeze blew against Toshiro's neck, while he walked. Arriving at the stream, a wolf lay in front of him. Walking past the wolf's corpse, he knelt as he cupped his hands taking a sip of the freshwater. Getting up, he walked to the cave. The moon almost fully risen, shined upon the forest as Toshiro continued. Getting back, Toshiro sat on the stone-carved throne as he drifted back to sleep.

Elizabeth Wilson commits suicide. She was the golden girl among her peers in Darkwood, Washington who stood above the pressure of her drug-ridden town. Explore the summer before her senior year that triggered the domino effect of Elizabeth's emotional and psychological breakdown that lead her to take her own life. This is the prequel to the main story, Petrichor and was never intended to be made. I wrote this because I wanted to explore Elizabeth's character and show how the main characters have changed since this event. I decided to release this first because Petrichor is undergoing a full rewrite. In the meantime, I'm writing a side story called Mourning Glory that takes place between the second and third act of Petrichor. Development is going rather fast so I suggest to to read that if you like this story
