《Pocket Dungeon Lite》Chapter 2 – Realism is Difficult

After being dragged back to our dorm and setting up the projector I was bombarded with questions regarding what I was planning since my creature packs didn’t match with my choice of energy pack at all. Tet also questioned my long pick time for packs, I gave him a look and moved on to world generation while turning on my physics engine and extreme biomes pack.
I then noticed the reason behind his face of absolute smugness a few minutes ago. This game is filled with customizable options and features. I’m sure my face showed my delight and mortification at this realization as I heard laughter from Illyuz’, Tet, and Osprey who seemed to have returned from whatever errand Tet sent her off to.
“Don’t spend forever on this, the next parts also have a ton of settings for you to mess around with so I just request that you finish this before tomorrow,'' said Tet sounding quite serious for once.
Knowing that I only had two days to get my world running was an unhappy thought but that being said, I always worked better under pressure. “Illyuz’ can you get me some coffee? The ones with 2 shots of espresso and iced preferably, I’m gonna do an all-nighter.” I said acknowledging my work self surfacing.
“Boss’ I know that arguing won’t help but please get some sleep tomorrow, okay? Celestia Universal College is not going to be kind and I want you to come in with at least some level of rest”, Illyuz’ pleaded.

[World Customization:]
[Please take this time to customize your world.]
[Step 1 (Modified due to Pack): World Set Up
“Very well”, I said. Waving off the request and making sure to set an alarm for tomorrow before I completely lost my focus on the outside world. I heard footsteps and hushed conversations before I lost all connection with outside sources and focus on the job at hand. First I noticed that I could either do a completely manual terrain generation or an algorithmic assisted one or a combination of both. I decided to do the last one as in some situations programs won’t be able to recreate my ideas.

I first made the solar system that my planet would be housed in, I adjusted the settings until the magical sun would be far enough away from the inner regions of my universe and in a blank stretch of space free from other major stars. Giving it almost no chance of getting caught in dangerous foreign gravitational pulls, gamma-ray bursts, or supernovas.
Next, I tweaked the composition of the solar star that would allow for life on my planet, I added a source of energy in the epicenter of the star allowing it to sustain itself on the pretty much infinite supply of faith I would soon create. I had to do this because if I wanted my physics engine to work alongside my other packs to create a possible world I needed to trick the system a little.
After getting my sun up and working I quickly plugged in the coordinates to the system calculator for the goldilocks zone and it showed me the area where I could build my planet. I picked a place where starting off my planet would be to the exact North of my sun thus allowing for more exact measurements for the speed and time of a cycle around the sun.
The location found I created the particles I would need for the collapse and coalition of the core of the planet. Before doing so I made sure to copy what I did with the sun during this phase as well since I didn’t want my planet losing its magnetic field after a few billion years. The minerals I added were mostly normal radioactive and magnetic materials though I did include some magical materials such as the crystalized radiation crystals from the radioactive wasteland biome of the Extreme Biomes Pack.
After which I had to create the mantle and crust which was easily done by putting in the desired thickness of each layer into the Realistic Earth program from the Physics Engine. For the tectonic plates under the crust layer, I randomized the layout with a few prerequisites being that there had to be at least 1 Earthquake-prone zone such as the real-life ring of fire. I also made it so that there must be a few volcanic areas that were randomized 20:80 on whether they were active or dormant.

This done I only needed to plan out my underwater areas, I plugged in the ratio of land to water as 40:60 then had the program randomized elevation as all things above 0 (which was set as the sea level) to be land and all things under zero to be underwater. This program then created undersea ravines and cave systems, it also had the side effect of creating underwater mountains and valleys. Of course, I also made an exception for shorelines and other such places where the elevation levels must slope or change through time.
To make sure that I could stabilize the planet’s climate and that it wouldn’t have an ice age every few “myrietes” (word meaning 10,000 thousand years in Greek). I check the angle of axial wobble and decided to add 2 moons that would allow for a more stable climate but more varied tidal patterns.
The last thing to do before I get to the real terrain generation ‘*deep breath*’ ‘I have to make an ozone layer’. Now I could do this the old fashion way by introducing a type of plant-like organism that will automatically create it through time. But I would much rather just make the whole thing at once which allows me to reinforce and stabilize it without waiting. I thus set down a blueprint of a spherical layer of oxygen and other gasses and dust that would help to form and keep the layer there. But as I knew that my soon to be sapients could cause issues to the layer I asked the system to remind me at a later stage to make the layer self-sustainable.
With a check of my H.A.W, I noticed that it was only 4 hours of work making this 11:30 AM. Pretty good time considering my track record with things such as this. My senses and connection to the outside world were slowly returning. The first thing I noticed was the large cup of black ice coffee that was nearly finished and a group of idi-*cough brave explorers who were looking at the projection of my solar system and zooming in and out to see my planet.
“Guys I need some food, a drawing pad, and more coffee please, it is now time to hurry through the actual terrain generation part and get my pocket dungeon finished”, I said hearing the tired tone I usually get after a session even though I tried to hide it.
Tet gave me a thumbs up and pushed me to get off my seat and go to the dining table to eat an early lunch. We all took a 20 or so minute break and as I got back to work I noticed that I was smiling looking around showed that we all were ‘maybe I will become a professional dungeon master after all’.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
